Asia's cruise industry is growing rapidly with the number of tourists increasing every year. This growth has encouraged intense competition among leading port cities in Asia to retain cruise tourists and cruise lines. The purpose of this study is to analyze the development of the cruise industry around Busan as a hybrid port city and propose new strategies for improving Busan's competitiveness. To achieve these goals, factor analysis and Importance-performance analysis (IPA) are used. The analyses results suggest that the development possibility of Busan as a cruise center is dependent on the improvement of certain factors, including the variety of inland tour options, unique experience, direct service infrastructure, tourist attractions, wide accessibility to other modes, and strong connection to attraction. In addition, the city needs to meet other requirements, including developing various tours, tourist products, and fly & cruise packages and hosting international festivals that can represent Busan and cater to potential cruise customers. Moreover, the city desperately needs to expand its commercial and cultural space by redeveloping its cruise terminals.
Rapidly increasing aged population provides an ample market opportunity for the Korean travel industry, and from national policy perspective, it poses an fortified demands for welfare tourism. In the fierce competition, this emerging market can serve as a lucrative target market for tourism & travel industry in Korea. In addition, using tourism for the aged as a social welfare policy can be a potentially viable means to mitigate the increase social pressure due to rapid population aging. This rationale is based on the assumption that tourism contributes to higher level of perceived life satisfaction compared to other leisure activities among the aged. In this study, using empirical data collected from 185 respondents aged 55 and above in Cheong Ju area, the effect of demographic factors and trip-related behaviors on life satisfaction was tested. In light of the results, practical implications for marketing and policy-making were presented in detail.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of tourism councils on the activation of rural tourism by comparing the rural tourism sites with the tourism councils and the rural tourism sites without tourism councils. The comparative indicators were divided into statistical quantitative indicators such as number of tourists, sales volume, and income level, and qualitative indicators of satisfaction, return visit, and word of mouth intentions. As a result of the study, it was found that all the items of the quantitative and qualitative indicators were active in the rural tourism area where the tourism council was composed. This can be attributed to the fact that the members of the tourism council consist of administrative agencies, experts, tourism operators, experts, etc., and constantly develop strategic programs such as diverse opinions and unique constellations. Therefore, in order to revitalize rural tourism in the future, it can be said that the tourism council should be constructed, and institutional devices should be prepared so that experts and residents in each field can participate equally.
The purpose underlying this study is to evaluate tourism development impacts from analyzing residents' and tourists' perceptions. Questionnaire surveys were carried on Kanhyun area in Kangwondo, Korea. Generally, residents in the area perceive positive economic impacts due to tourism development, however levels of employment and economic independence of the locality are perceived low. Sociocultural changes also bring negative aspects in life and residents' awareness of environmental impacts show far more negative. Tourists' satisfaction levels with the area and the management attributes are relatively high. Some suggestions are made based on the result of the survey to help the area to be more successful as a tourist destination. More comprehensive research is needed for the future study.
