우리나라에서는 학술과 관광자원으로 이용할 수 있는 유명한 석회동굴이 영월, 단양, 삼척, 울진, 제주도 등을 비롯하여 많이 산재하고 있으며, 동굴에 대한 탐험과 연구자는 최근에 들어 한국동굴학회를 중심으로 활발하게 진행되고 있는 실정이다.(중략)

A cave starts to be destructed and damaged as soon as it's open to the public. Due to many convenience facilities for tour visitors, it's gradually polluted. For example, lamplight causes green and black mold while temperature rise caused by many tourists and lamplight brings vatting and exfoliation. In addition, visitors'reckless behavior have caused water pollution and destructed cave creatures' habitat.

1. 석회암의 성인 (1) 암석의 풍화로 암석 중의 탄산수소칼슘이 되어 녹아 나온다. (2) 탄산수소칼슘은 액체로만 존재하며 이는 물에 섞여 호수나 바다로 유입된다. (3) 탄산수소칼슘이 수온 변화로 이산화탄소를 잃어버리면 탄산칼슘(방해석이나 아라고나이트-석회암)의 결정으로 정출 퇴적되어 석회암층을 만든다. 수중 식물이 탄산수소칼슘을 흡수하여 석회질인 껍데기(조개류, 유공충 등), 뼈(산호 및 기타 동물)를 만든다.(중략)

외국에 있어 자연안전을 위한 행정제도를 보면 주로 자치적인 주민의 조직체에 의해서 보호행정제도가 되고 있는데 영국의 Nationaltrust, 미국의 Shellerclub과 Nationaltrust, France의 관광자원보호협회연합회, Italy의 자연보호회, 그리고 일본에서 1968년에 설립된 총 200 단체를 망나한 관광자원보호재단 등이 그것이다(중략)

All types of tourists visit the cave. The names and explanations of cave formations give very useful information to them. Unfortunately, however, there are a lot of wrong and incorrect statements in the information. Thispaper has investigated this problem in considerations for the importance of information delivery. The problem has turned out as follows: 1) Most of the cave formation names are too abstract based on the shape instead of scientific names; 2) The names are mostly available with little scientific explanation; 3) In case of explanation, wrong, incorrect and controversial statement is found.

현재 우리나라에서는 동굴자원을 개발하여 관광자원으로 활용하고 있는 예가 많다 화산동굴의 만장굴과 협재동굴, 석회동굴의 고수굴, 고씨굴, 천곡동굴 등을 비롯한 7개의 동굴이 개방되어 있다. 이러한 개방 동굴들은 국가 또는 개인의 소유에 의해서 관리 보존되고 있으나 시간의 경과에 따라 훼손되기도 하고 일부는 파손의 정도가 지극히 심한 정도에 이르기도 하고 있다.(중략)

우리나라에서 동굴에 대한 관심을 갖게 된 것은 지극히 최근의 일이다. 즉 본격적인 동굴탐사가 시작된 것은 지금으로부터 약 15년 전부터의 일이다. 동굴이 관광개발되어 그 지역주민의 소득증대에 이바지하게 된 것은 겨우 10년의 역사밖에 되지 않는다. 그러나 이들 동굴에 대한 각 학계의 관심은 나날이 고조되어 이제 제주도의 빌레못동굴은 세계제1의 단일용암동굴도 등장하게 되었고, 다시 만장굴은 용암동굴계 시스템으로서 세계 제일가는 각광을 받게 되었다. (중략)

Unlike conventional cave classification, this paper is attempted to classify caves in Korea in considerations for the surroundings. As a result, it‘s been confirmed that a cave can maximize the effect of information delivery as a part of great tourism resources. It‘s also been confirmed that the characteristics of caves can be differently interpreted depending on the size of surrounding humanistic environment as well as the size of the cave.

최근에는 국토관리의 차원이나 관광 등의 목적으로 동굴에 관한 관심이 많아졌다. 특히 동굴이 매장문화재로서의 의미를 갖기 시작하면서 더욱 그렇다. 따라서 지금은 어느 때보다도 동굴에 대한 이해가 필요할 뿐 아니라 동굴자체에 대한 체계적인 조사 연구가 필요한 때이다. 따라서 동굴형성에 관한 이론적인 뒷받침이 확실하게 정리된 다음에야 동굴자원을 효율적으로 활용할 수 있는 기반이 마련되리라고 생각한다.(중략)
