  • TIMSS is a representative international comparative study that analyzes changes in mathematics and science achievement, and it collects information on the educational system, curriculum, teaching and learning situation of participating countries as well as research and check, and provides implications for each country's mathematics and science education. Although domestic TIMSS studies focused on the results of achievement related to the evaluation of mathematics, not many have taken a closer look at the content and characteristics of the assessment framework. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to analyze the characteristics of the TIMSS 2019 mathematics assessment framework, and to derive implications for the mathematics curriculum and mathematics learning by examining the students' study time in light of the Korean mathematics curriculum. The implications derived from the results of this study are summarized as follows: First, it is necessary to check the connection between content elements in the mathematics and education process. Second, it is necessary to check the appropriateness and connectivity of the learning timing of the content elements in the mathematics and education courses. Finally, it is necessary to verify that the hierarchy of content areas and the structure of content systems in mathematics and education courses are consistent with the direction of mathematics education at the international level. This study can be used as a basis for mathematics and curriculum revisions, and can be used to set directions for the development of large-scale evaluation frameworks.

  • This case study exemplifies science classroom observation and analysis. Data from two-day classroom observation, pre- and post-instruction interviews with the teacher and instructional materials were used to analyse the features of a science classroom. A teacher's classroom practices were examined in terms of the following six categories: (1)curriculum and science content, (2)teaching and learning methods, (3) teacher' s knowledge about learners, (4)classroom environment, (5)assessment, and (6)teacher's efforts for professional development. The teacher in this case study not only improved his own classroom practices, but also took an active role in teachers' in-service education to share his practical knowledge with others. Implications that valid evaluation(or observation) frameworks of classroom practices have on teacher education and teachers' inservice education are also discussed. These evaluation frameworks should provide teachers with a vision of highly accomplished practices.

  • In this study, we analyzed the relationship between the physical science domain of TIMSS 2019 and the Korean science curriculum. Twelve subjects are presented in the physical science domain of the TIMSS 2019 4th grade evaluation framework. Research group consisting of elementary and middle school teachers and science education experts, a total of 12, participated to analyze in which grade these subjects were included in the Korea 2009 revised and 2015 revised science curriculum. As a results of analyzing whether the achievement standards of the TIMSS 2019 evaluation framework and Korean science curriculum are consistent, the subjects pertinent to chemistry like 'chemical changes in everyday life,' 'heat transfer,' and 'electricity and simple electrical circuits' appeared not covered at all until the 4th grade curriculum in Korea. Given that the TIMSS 2019 evaluation framework is an international achievement standard, we are proposing to improve the Korean curriculum as follows: first, for the development of the next science curriculum, there is a need for science curriculum organized from the 1st grade of elementary school to connect the content and scope of chemistry in elementary, middle, and high schools as a whole including the Nuri curriculum. Second, as an alternative to the problem of suitability of learning volume and level of learning, it is possible to think of a method to readjust the grade of dealing with related concepts by lowering the difficulty or simplifying the concept. Third, it is necessary to discuss about introducing essential concepts and standard terms into Korea science curriculum according to international trends.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyse the characteristics of domestic scientific inquiry related research topics and consequently provide fundamental data and suggestions from a teaching method point of view. The study subjects was collected from the initial issue to the february 2016 issue of academic journals and using the keyword that 'inquiry', 'scientific inquiry'. The framework of Professional factors of teaching practice was developed and used for selecting subjects of study. The selected study subjects were analyzed according to the framework. And Topics of study were categorized and analyzed. The topic was thoroughly debated between 2 science education experts and 4 doctorate candidates within a specialist workshop. Results show that scientific education environments, scientific inquiry evaluation and teaching ability was studied less than education process and textbook analysis, scientific inquiry designing and application. And The research on the topics indicated that most research is concentrated in specific areas. It is postulated that additional research into scientific education environments, scientific inquiry evaluation and teaching ability would further develop the teachers' teaching abilities and enable a more successful science lesson in the classroom.

  • Observation is one of the important aspects in science and science education. However. observation has so many varieties that the purpose and the meaning of scientific observations used in science education are different in persons, contexts, and subjects. In this study, we tried to understand the natures of scientific observation and investigated students' observational activities using four observation tasks: candle, double pendulum, iron filings around bar magnet, two electric bulbs connected in series. We required the subjects to observe the given tasks and described what did they observe. Based on students' observational descriptions, students' observational activities could be classified in four categories: primitive, interpretive, operational, and interfered observation. Also, we could find that some of the descriptions were non-observational activities such as predicting and questioning and so on. Finally, implications for the teaching of observation in science education are suggested.

  • This study aims to design a framework for analyzing group argumentation in terms of participants' interaction. Regarding the current group argumentation setting as argumentation on socio-scientific issues within participants who have had limited experience on group argumentation, the analytical framework was designed to explain (1) what was each participant's role on group argumentation, (2) how these roles were changed within each time of argumentation, and (3) how the patterns of interaction were changed through seven times of a series of argumentation on socio-scientific issues. Based on the literature review on analytical framework of argumentation in science education including the works on the structure of argumentation, the discourse formation through interaction, and the linguistic approach on participants' interaction, the current research framework was built. Showing the results of applying the designed framework on group argumentation as an example, strength of using the current designed framework was discussed.
