A Critical Review of the Skill-Based Approach to Scientific Inquiry in Science Education (과학 교육에서 기능 중심의 과학 탐구에 대한 비판적 고찰)

  • The purpose of this study is to critically review the skill-based approach to scientific inquiry in science education and to explore the meaning of science practices that are emphasized in recent science education reform movement. An extensive review of relevant literature was carried out, and the results were summarized according to the detailed themes of the study. In the skill-based approach of which Science-A Process Approach (SAPA) is a representative example, science process skills were presented as hierarchically connected with one another, they were believed to be transferable or generalizable, and science learning through discovery was stressed. These points of view are, however, contradicted with those of the modern philosophy of science which suggests the theory-laden nature of using the skills. The skill-based view has also been criticized by the fact that the use of inquiry skills is content-specific or context-dependent and that science theories or principles cannot be discovered by induction. In contrast, the recent view understands science practices holistically, emphasizes the diverse ways of doing the practices which vary with different contents or contexts, and considers student ideas importantly in the science classroom. The findings of this study can contribute to the development of a new science curriculum by providing implications for establishing a consistent view on scientific inquiry.

Exploring How a High School Science Teacher's Understanding and Facilitation of Scientific Modeling Shifted through Participation in a Professional Learning Community (교사학습공동체에 참여한 한 고등학교 교사의 과학적 모델링에 대한 이해 및 수업 실행 변화 탐색 -프레임 분석을 중심으로-)

  • The purpose of this study is to explore how a high school science teacher (Teacher E) shifted her understanding and facilitation of scientific modeling through participation in a professional learning community (PLC) for over a year. Based on socially situated theory of learning, I focused on examining Teacher E's frames about scientific modeling from her social interactions. Teacher E participated in her school-based PLC over a year and collaborated with other science teachers, coaches, and researchers to improve science instruction. I qualitatively explored her participation in 6 full-day professional learning opportunities-studios-where the PLC members collectively planned, implemented, and debriefed modeling-based lessons. Especially, I focused on two Studios (Studio 2, 6) where Teacher E became the host teacher and implemented the lessons. I also examined her classroom teaching in those Studios. To understand how the PLC inquiry affected the shifts observed in Teacher E's understanding and practice, I explored how the inquiry evolved over the 6 Studios. Findings suggest that in Studio 2, Teacher E viewed students' role in scientific modeling as to fill out the worksheet with "correct" answers. Meanwhile, in Studio 6, she focused on helping students collaborate to construct explanatory models of phenomena using evidence. The PLC inquiry, focused on supporting students' construction of evidence-based explanations and collaboration in scientific modeling, seemed to promote the shifts observed in Teacher E's understanding and facilitation of scientific modeling. These findings can inform educational researchers and practitioners who aim to promote teachers' professional learning to support students' epistemic practices.

Social Constructivism Revisited Focusing on the Controversies with History of Technology (사회구성주의의 재검토: 기술사와의 논쟁을 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this article is to examine and assess the main issues in social constructivism with reference to the history of technology. Social constructivism, as an alternative explanation to technological change, has developed its points actively responding to various criticisms. Historians of technology have joined in dialogues with social constructivists through controversies about narrative vs theory, reliability vs performance, and evolution of bicycle. Social constructivists tend to use new jargons excessively, don't deal historical materials rigorously, and don't consider content-dependency sufficiently. To apply social constructivism to Korean cases many problems should be identified including the deficiency of historical materials, the importance of technological learning, and the peculiarity of relevant social group.

An Analysis of Science Textbooks and Internet Sites Related to Diffusion and Dissolution on the View Point of Particle Theory, and Development of Computer-Assisted Instruction Program (입자론의 관점에서 본 확산과 용해 개념에 관련된 과학 교과서 및 인터넷 자료 분석과 컴퓨터 수업 보조자료의 개발)

  • In this study we analysed 3-12 grade science textbooks, many literatures and internet sites related to diffusion and dissolution concepts. From these data, we discovered that the explanations of diffusion that used in textbooks are not considered the site of collision with mediums, and confused with dissolution, state transition and effusion. In the case of dissolution, almost analysis data were short of the explanations of interaction effect. Most of all, the focus of dissolution explanations was to solve the calculation problems rather than to understand the concept. Every internet site was poor, just as the level of showing textbook contents with computer, so the only effect of using computer was the sense of sight and hearing. Chemistry must be understood nature phenomena with a view point of particle theory, but many textbooks and Internet sites didn't represent it sufficiently. We set up the correct scientific concept and linked micro world of particle theory with macro world of nature phenomena. With a use of computer which have the advantage of representing moving things, we developed the computer-assisted instruction programs related to diffusion and dissolution with the viewpoint of particle movement.

Elementary School Students' Views on the Nature of Science (과학의 본성에 대한 초등학생들의 견해)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate elementary school students' views on the nature of science and to compare their views by gender. Participants were 159 sixth graders in Seoul. An instrument consisting of five multiple-choice items were developed on the bases of previous studies. At the end of each item, students were also asked to write their reason in details for selecting a specific option. The results indicated that the students' views on the nature of science, on the whole, were neither accurate nor adequate from the viewpoints of modern epistemology. On comparing their views by gender, however, no significant differences were found except the item concerning the 'nature of model'.

  • The encoding schemes of special characters in science & technology information services are always serious matters. Therefore, this paper draw up a general plan for encoding scheme of special characters related in some way. For this work, I have made an investigation into encoding cases of KISTI'S YesKisti service. And I have reviewed the important issues and standardization trends. Finally, this study proposes some requisites and problems for encoding scheme standard of special characters in science & technology information services.

A Transmission Scheme for Efficient Streaming in Large-delay Networks (높은 지연을 갖는 네트워크에서 효율적인 스트리밍 전송기법)

  • The standard streaming delivery Is mostly based on UDP with no end-to-end congestion control. For this reason, wide usage of multimedia applications in Internet might lead to congested networks. To avoid such a situation, studies on the congestion controlled streaming delivery has been increasingly done after the 1990s. However, by considering only the stability aspect of network, these works ignore the characteristics of multimedia streaming applications. Moreover, most of previous works have no consideration on the network delay which produces an effect on streaming service. In this thesis, in order to overcome limitations of the previous transmission schemes for streaming, we propose a new transmission scheme called 'BEST(Buffer-driven Efficient STreaming)'. The BEST takes a hybrid approach that considers both user-level requirements and network-level requriements. Therefore, the BEST improves the stability of networks by adjusting the sending rate suitable for network status and it also provides the smoothed playback by preventing buffer underflow or overflow. The BEST is designed to consider high-delay networks. Through the simulation, we prove that the BEST satisfies both user-level and network-level requirements in a high-delay network environments.

A Case Study on Teaching and Learning of the Linear Function in Constant Velocity Movement: Focus on Integrated Curriculum of Mathematics and Science (등속도 운동에서 일차함수 교수-학습 과정에 관한 사례연구: 수학과 과학의 통합교육 관점을 기반으로)

  • As a theoretical background for this research, the literatures which focus on teaching and loaming of connecting with mathematics and science were investigated. And the rationale of integrated curriculum on the basis of the 7th mathematics curriculum and the goal of mathematics education and the forms of integrated curriculum and the integrated curriculum in foreign school were investigated. Depending on this review, the implement method of the integrated curriculum of mathematics and science in Korea school is suggested as the following: It requires designing inter-disciplinary into-grated problem or various teaching and learning materials which are based upon concept, skill, and principle by commonality found across the subject matter. Based on the analyses upon described above, three inter-disciplinary integrated teaching and learning materials were developed. And then, based on the case stud)', the research questions were analyzed in depth. Students could understand the developing process of linear function, develop the formula and grape representing the relationship between time and velocity, time and distance, and interpret realistic meaning of the slope.

  • 최근 전 세계적으로 서비스 산업의 노동력 비중이 늘어나고 서비스업 뿐만 아니라 농업 및 제조업 분야에서도 서비스의 가치 비중이 높아지고 있다. 그러나 최근까지 서비스는 대부분 제공자의 직관과 경험에 의존하여 운영되었기 때문에 서비스의 성과와 고객 만족도는 미미한 수준에 그칠 수밖에 없었다. 이에 따라 서비스의 생산성을 향상시키고 서비스 수준을 혁신하는 방법을 찾는 것이 산업 사회의 주요 현안으로 떠올랐고 이러한 배경 하에 서비스업의 본질을 과학적으로 규명하여 서비스 분야의 혁신을 이루기 위해 경영학, 사회과학, 산업공학 등 여러 분야의 지식을 종합하여 서비스 과학(Services Science)이라는 새로운 학문 분야를 만들려는 움직임이 일기 시작했다. 서비스 과학의 목적은 공급자와 고객 사이에 가치를 창출하는 일련의 과정인 서비스를 보다 과학적인 방법을 통하여 측정하고 예측할 수 있는 것으로 변환시킴으로써 서비스의 미래 가치와 위험을 정량적으로 예측하고 나아가 서비스의 성과와 만족도를 높이는 것이라고 할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 U-city 건설에 중추적 역할을 할 것으로 기대되는 지리정보시스템(GIS)의 비즈니스 모델을 대상으로, GIS 정보 서비스의 특성을 규명하여 이러한 정보 서비스가 높은 생산성을 갖기 위한 방안으로서 다학제적 관점의 공유를 통해 다양한 학문 분야의 지식을 종합 적용하고 서비스의 특성을 고려하여 직관과 경험이 아닌 과학적인 도구와 방법론을 통해 GIS 정보 서비스를 관리할 것을 제안한다.

자율운항선박의 정박지 내 항행 지원을 위한 운항 패턴 및 규정에 관한 기초 연구

  • 본 연구는 울산항 인근 정박지 내 선박의 운항 패턴을 파악하고, 관련 법규 및 준수 실태를 대조하여 자율운항선박의 실제 운항 시에 부차적인 운항 수칙을 수립하는 데 목적을 두고 있다. 일반적으로 항행하는 선박의 해양사고 중 높은 비중을 차지하는 조우 상황에서의 운항 규칙과 관련된 법률이 정박지 내에도 적용되고 있다. 이러한 관점에서 관련 법규들을 토대로, 실제 정박지에서 항행하는 선박들의 운항 패턴들을 관측하였으며, 대부분 정박지 내에서 출항하는 선박들은 항로의 우측에 근접하여 운항하는 양상을 보이며 우측 항행을 준수하고 있음을 확인하였다. 또한, 정박지 및 항내에서 충돌과 같은 예치기 못한 사고가 발생하는 대표적인 운항 패턴들은 정면 조우 상황, 방파제 내 출항 선박 회피, 우측 항행 등으로 분류되며, 정면 조우 상황과 방파제 출항 선박 회피의 경우에는 관련 법규를 준수하며 항행하는 것을 확인하였으나, 우측 항행 상황에서는 조우 상황에 따라 부득이하게 이행할 수 없는 경우가 발생함을 확인하였다. 본 기초 연구를 통하여 정박지 및 항내에서의 항행하는 선박의 운항 패턴을 자율운항선박에 적용 가능성을 타진하고, 항해 지원이 가능한 운항 수칙을 새로 정립하는 데 활용하고자 한다.
