  • The purpose of the study is to analyze the levels of cognitive demands and components of the reasoning process presented in the mathematical sequence section of three high school mathematics textbooks in order to provide implications for the development of reasoning tasks in the future mathematics textbooks. The results of the study have revealed that most of the reasoning tasks presented in the mathematical sequence section of the three high school mathematics textbooks seemed to require low-level cognitive demands and that low-level cognitive demands reasoning tasks required only a component of one reasoning process. On the other hand, only a portion of the reasoning tasks appeared to require high-level of cognitive demands, and high-level cognitive demands reasoning tasks required various components of reasoning process. Considering the results of the study, it seems to suggest that we need more high-level cognitive demands reasoning tasks to develop high-level cognitive reasoning that would provide students with learning opportunities for various processes of reasoning, and that would provide a deeper understanding of the nature of reasoning.

  • The purpose of the study is to analyze the characteristics of open-ended tasks in terms of cognitive demands. For this purpose, we analyzed characteristics of open-ended tasks presented in the sequence units of three high school mathematics textbooks. The results of the study have revealed that low cognitive demand levels of open-ended tasks had characteristics including procedures within previous tasks or within those tasks. On the other hand, high cognitive demand levels of open-ended tasks had characteristics of actively exploring new conditions to gain access to what is being sought, requesting a basis for judgement, linking various representations to the concepts of sequences, or requiring a variety of answers. These results are significant in that they not only specified the characteristics of open-ended tasks with high cognitive demands in terms of the intended curriculum, but also provided a direction for the development of open-ended taks with high congitive demands.

  • The purpose of this study was to find out how interest in thermal concepts and the perceived difficulty affect the stimulation of science state curiosity. To achieve this purpose, 410 elementary school students in 5th to 6th grade were asked to measure interest in the content of the thermal concept tasks, the perceived difficulty and science state curiosity while solving the thermal concept tasks. 2 (low interest vs. high interest)×2 (easy vs. difficult) ANCOVA was conducted with the covariate of the student's level of science curiosity, which is expected to affect the stimulation of science state curiosity. As a result of the analysis, students with high interest in the contents of the task were showed high science state curiosity. Meanwhile, there was no difference in the level of science state curiosity according to the perceived difficulty. In addition, science state curiosity level of the students with low interest in the content of the task were high when they perceived the task as easy, but science state curiosity level of the students with high interest in the content of the task were high when they perceived the task as difficult. This study was meaningful in that it empirically verified that interest in the content of the tasks has an effect on the stimulation of science state curiosity, and that the effect of interest on the stimulation of science state curiosity varies according to the level of the perceived difficulty.

  • As information technology is more actively incorporated into automobiles, the role of IVIS (In-Vehicle Infotainment System) is becoming increasingly important for providing convenience and entertainment for drivers. However, using the infotainment systems while driving requires task switching and attending to two visual resources simultaneously. We simulated a setting where participants have to drive while interacting with the infotainment system and examined how task difficulty and motor cues impact driver task-switching and driving performance, specifically whether the effects of motor cues differ depending on task difficulty. For the infotainment display, we used two types of number array depending on the congruency between the digit repetition and the chunking unit, while task difficulty was manipulated by the size of the touch-keys. Participants were instructed to dial two numbers on the screen while we recorded the dialing time, lateral position, inter-key press intervals, and steering wheel control. We found that dialing time and lateral position were affected by task difficulty, while the type of number array had no effect. However, the inter-key press intervals between chunked numbers and steering wheel movement both increased when participants had to use an incongruent number array, which indicates that, if number digits are repeated, chunking is ignored by the drivers. Our findings indicate that, in a dual-task condition, motor cues offset the effect of chunking and can effectively signal the timing for task switching.

  • There is a lack of empirical research on the level of students' state anxiety according to their perceived task difficulty when confronting science questions. This study seeks to investigate whether perceived task difficulty moderates the process of arousing students' state anxiety in science learning. In pursuit of this objective, we engaged 410 fifth- and sixth-grade elementary school students (186 fifth graders; 194 females) in solving two science questions. We then verified the moderating effect of perceived task difficulty on the relationship between science anxiety and state anxiety arousal when confronting science questions using the PROCESS Macro Model 1. Results confirmed that science anxiety and perceived task difficulty significantly and positively predicted state anxiety. Notably, perceived task difficulty had a significant moderating effect on the process of arousing state anxiety, where lower perceived task difficulty led to a greater increase in state anxiety after confronting the science questions. We discuss the implications of the findings for science education and propose potential directions for future research.

  • This study examined the effect of cognitive ability levels on skill acquisition and transfer as a function of training difficulty. Participants were classified into three groups based on the result of cognitive ability tests. They were trained with difficult or easy tasks and then transferred to novel difficult tasks. Results suggest that cognitive ability levels influenced training performance, though the effect of training difficulty on transfer performance varied with cognitive ability. The training difficulty was most effective for those who have the medium level of cognitive ability. These results were discussed with respect to individual differences and skill transfer performance.

  • This study explored the moderating effects of task difficulty for flow, learning motivation, and interesting in distant PBL classes of pre-service teachers. For this, the research model was constructed by analyzing previous studies. The research model verification was conducted by 105 students of taking courses in the curriculum. The distant PBL used a real-time video conference system. Cooperative activities were carried out in real time. After the end of the distant PBL activity, the level of learning motivation, interesting, flow, and task difficulty perception were measured. The collected data were analyzed using a test of the structural model invariance across the groups using a structural equation model. This analysis verifies the difference in path coefficients between measurement models. The control effect of task difficulty was verified through the difference in path coefficient. As a result, it was verified that interesting mediates the influence of learning motivation on flow. And the moderating effect of the perceived task difficulty appeared on the path from learning motivation to interesting.

  • This study investigated age differences in children's expression of pride and shame by their age, and type and level of task difficulty when they succeeded of failed on tasks. The subjects were 55 4-year-old children from 2 day-care centers and 37 7-year-old children from I elementary school. Each child participated in pride and shame assessment sessions. Data were analyzed by repeated measures ANOVA, t-test, paired t-test, Pearson's correlations. When they succeeded on tasks, 4-year-olds showed more pride than 7-year-olds. More pride was shown when subjects succeeded on difficult than on easy tasks. An interaction effect for pride was found between age, and type and level of task difficulty. Seven-year-olds showed more shame than 4-year-olds when they failed on tasks. More shame was shown when subjects failed on easy than on difficult tasks. The expression of pride was positively related to the expression of shame.
