  • Recently, the interest in integrated underground geospatial information mapping (IUGIM) to ensure the safety of underground spaces and facilities has been increasing. Because IUGIM is used in the fields of underground space development and underground safety management, the up-to-dateness and accuracy of information are critical. In this study, IUGIM and field data were classified, and the accuracy of IUGIM was improved by spatial interpolation. A spatial interpolation technique was used to process borehole data in IUGIM, and a quantitative evaluation was performed with mean absolute error and root mean square error through the cross-validation of seven interpolation results according to the technique and model. From the cross-validation results, accuracy decreased in the order of nonuniform rational B-spline, Kriging, and inverse distance weighting. In the case of Kriging, the accuracy difference according to the variogram model was insignificant, and Kriging using the spherical variogram exhibited the best accuracy.

  • A satellite is ultimately verified by performing a coupled load analysis with the launch vehicle. To increase the accuracy of the coupled load analysis results, it is important to have good accuracy of the finite element model. Therefore, finite element model correlation is essential. In general, model correlation is performed by changing the material properties and thickness one by one, but this process takes a lot of time and cost. The current paper proposes an efficient model correlation method using optimization. Significant variables were selected through analysis of variance, and the time and cost required for analysis and optimization were reduced by using the Kriging surrogate model. The method proposed in this paper can be applied only with the vibration test results, and it has a great advantage in terms of efficiency in that it can significantly reduce the numerical calculation cost and time required.

  • In site investigation for tunnel designs, nowadays, geophysical exploration such as seismic exploration and electric resistivity exploration as well as drilling logging is frequently carried out. A method which can systematically make the utmost use of all available data obtained from investigation, therefore, is strongly required for the optimal evaluation of ground conditions in terms of rock mass class, etc. Many researchers have proposed using qualitative data to cope with the lack of quantitative data. In this study, an evaluation technique of rock mass classes in undrilled region was proposed based upon multiple indicator kriging method which is a geostatistical technique. It was shown that two types of data with different degree of uncertainty, for example, drilling logging data and geophysical exploration data, could be simultaneously utilized in evaluating rock mass classes for a real tunnel design.

  • We propose an optimal design to improve the capacity by reducing the noise of the intake system. The length and radius of each component of the current Intake system are selected as control factors. We accept the output from computer simulator with orthogonal arrays. Then, the Kriging estimates are computed. From this, we exploit the optimal design of the intake system by adapting simulated annealing. From the results of this optimal design, we conclude that Kriging method with the orthogonal arrays is the efficient method for Design and Analysis of Computer Experiments and we propose the useful results for the low noise intake system.

  • This study proposes the structural optimization of a manifold valve. FE analysis is performed to evaluate the strength of a manifold valve. In addition, the structural optimization technique is applied to reduce its weight. In this study, the optimization method using the kriging interpolation method is adopted to obtain the minimum weight satisfying the strength constraint. The maximum stress and the weight are replaced by the metamodels. In this process, tile sample points are generated by latin-hypercube design. Optimum designs are obtained by ANSYS Workbench and the in-house program.

  • This paper presents a numerical optimization of louvered fins to enhance the JF factor in terms of the design parameters, including the fin pitch, the number of louvers, the louver angle, the fin thickness, and the re-direction louver length. We carried out a parametric study to select the three most important parameters affecting the JF factor, which were the fin pitch, number of louvers, and the louver angle. We optimally designed the louvered fin by using 3rd-order full factorial design, the kriging method, and a micro genetic algorithm. Consequently, the JF factor of the optimum model increased by 16% compared to that of the base model. Moreover, the optimum model reduced the pressure drop by 17% with a comparable heat transfer rate.

  • Although optimization by sequentially refining metamodels is known to be computationally very efficient, the metamodel that can be used for this purpose is limited to Kriging method due to the difficulties related with sample points selections. The present study suggests a novel method for sequentially refining metamodels using Pareto Frontiers, which can be used independent of the type of metamodels. It is shown from the examples that the present method yields more accurate metamodels compared with full-factorial optimization and also guarantees global optimum irrespective of the initial conditions. Finally, in order to prove the generality of the present method, it is applied to a 2D transonic airfoil optimization problem, and the successful design results are obtained.

  • The butterfly valve has been used to control the switch and flux of fluid. While research about the characteristics of butterfly valve fluid have been done, study of the optimum design, considering structural safety, must keep pace with it. Thus, a method is proposed for an optimum butterfly valve. Initially, the stability of the butterfly valve, using FEM and CFD, is evaluated, and a variable is selected using the initial analysis results. Also, the shape optimization design is accomplished using the DACE model. In terms of research results, the experiment satisfied the objective and limitation functions.

  • This paper proposes an optimal design scheme to reduce the noise of the engine cooling fan by adapting Kriging with two meta-heuristic techniques. An engineering model has been developed for the prediction of the noise spectrum of the engine cooling fan. The noise of the fan is expressed as the discrete frequency noise peaks at the BPF and its harmonics and line spectrum at the broad band by noise generation mechanisms. The object of this paper is to find the Optimal Design for Noise Reduction of the Engine Cooling Fan. We firstly show a comparison of the measured and calculated noise spectra of the fan for the validation of the noise prediction program. Orthogonal array is applied as design of experiments because it is suitable for Kriging. With these simulated data, we can estimate a correlation parameter of Kriging by solving the nonlinear problem with genetic algorithm and find an optimal level for the noise reduction of the cooling fan by optimizing Kriging estimates with simulated annealing. We notice that this optimal design scheme gives noticeable results. Therefore, an optimal design for the cooling fan is proposed by reducing the noise of its system.

  • Inversion result of geophysical data given as a block type was geostatistically simulated with borehole observation given as a point type and was applied to the rock classifying map. The geophysical data generally involved secondary information for the target material and were obtained for overall region. In contrast, borehole data provided direct information for the target material, but tended to be effective only for a narrow range of region and were dealt as a point type. Integrated simulation or kriging interpolation of these two different kinds of information required the covariance for point-point, point-block and block-block. Using the Bssim module included in SGeMS software, integrated result of geophysical data and borehole data were obtained. The results were then compared with the method of geostatistical inversion proposed by authors. Downscaling method used in this study showed relatively more flexible than the geostatistical inversion.
