  • The cold-formed steel stud, which has been used as a load-bearing member of wall panels for steel houses, poses a significant problem in insulation due to heat bridging of the web. Therefore, some additional thermal insulating materials are required. In order to solve this problem, the cold-formed steel thermal stud with slits in the web was developed. However, estimating the structural strength of thermal studs is very difficult because of the arrangement of perforations. In this paper, an analytical and experimental research on thermal studs is described. Three types of studs with different length, pitch and arrangement of slits were tested to failure. A simple design approach was proposed based on the test results. The proposed method adopted the direct strength method, based on the elastic local and distortional buckling stress of plain studs with equivalent thickness in the web instead of thermal studs. The predictions using the proposed method were compared with test results for verification and the adequacy of the proposed method was confirmed.

  • The strength of reinforced concrete members has uncertainty from material properties of, concrete and reinforcements, section dimensions, and construction errors and so on. The accurate evaluation of these uncertainties is necessary to assure the reasonable safety. The uncertainties should be taken into account in design using structural reliability theory which requires probabilistic models for such uncertainties. In current Korean design code, most reliability evaluations were performed based on foreign data because of lack of local data. In this paper, the probabilistic models for yield strength of reinforcements were developed based on local data. The effects of various factors, nominal yield strength, diameter of reinforcements, and companies, on the models are also examined. According to data analysed, the effects of those factors are not significant. The probability model for yield strength of reinforcements in Korea can be expressed with Beta distribution based on collected data.

  • In this study, inelastic buckling strength of HSA800 steel columns were tested to investigate the applicability of current column curve (KBC2009, 2010 AISC-LRFD) to HSA800 steel. Key test variables included width-thickness ratio, plate-edge restraints, and column slenderness ratio. Specimens made of ordinary steel (SM490) were also tested for comparison purposes. All the concentrically loaded HSA800 specimens exhibited sufficient buckling strength compared to the current column curve, but some of SM490 specimens showed understrength. This difference can be explained by the lower residual stress present in HSA800 specimens.

  • The object of this study was a cold-formed steel wall stud panel sheathed by gypsum boards. In the beam-analysis, the panel was treated as a simple beam with a uniform lateral loading. The deflections were calculated by considering the primary factors that reduced the stiffness of the panel. In the column-analysis, the panel was treated as a bearing wall with an axial load. By using an energy method, nominal axial strength could be evaluated by considering both flexural buckling and torsional-flexural buckling. All calculations were programmed and compared with the results of the experiment. In the beam-analysis, experimental deflections were close to theoretical deflections. In the column-analysis, the experimental values were also close to theoretical values in axial strength.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the influence that how does contact surface between concrete and steel influence the steel encased composite column by push-out test. Also nominal bond stress indicated by design standard such as Eurocode 4 is underestimated in small scale steel encased composite column. The other objective of this study is to investigate how does the number and space of shear connector influence the H-shaped steel encased composite column. The shear behavior of shear connectors is investigated by push-out test.

  • Nonseismic designed RC frame have a possibility of shear failure because of deficiencies of reinforcing details. To model the shear failure in numerical analysis, shear strength degradation models which Include Moehle's and ATC 40 are compared and applied to push-over analysis. For numerical analysis, three storied building frame is selected and designed according to Korean Concrete Design Code(2003). As results, It is shown that Moehle's shear strength degradation model estimates the shear strength lower than NZSEE model and has less variation than ATC 40 model and all the shear strengths of models are greater than the nominal shear strength of ACI 318. Also, from the numerical analysis, it is pointed out that there may be great difference in lateral drift capacity if a different shear strength model is used. And the capacity can be severely underestimated if the restraining model of plastic rotation of ATC 40 is used, compared to the use of shear spring model for shear degradation.

  • In this study, prefabricated composite columns using high-strength angles (PSRC composite column) was studied. Concentric axial loading tests were performed for 2/3 scale PSRC specimens and an conventional SRC specimen with H-steel at the center of the cross-section. The test parameters were the steel ratio of angles and the spacing of lateral re-bars. The test results showed that by placing the angles at the corners of the cross-section for confinement with provided for the core concrete, the PSRC column specimens exhibited greater load-carrying capacity and deformation capacity than those of the conventional SRC column. The axial load-carrying capacity of the PSRC columns was greater than the prediction by KBC 2009. Using existing stress-strain relationship of confined concrete, the axial load-deformation relationship of the specimens were predicted. The numerical predictions correlated well with the test results in terms of initial stiffness, load-carrying capacity, and post-peak strength- and stiffness-degradations.

  • An ultra-high strength prestressed prismatic beam of 100 MPa in compressive strength was developed by increasing the watertightness of concrete by utilizing centrifugal molding processes without adding expensive admixtures such as silica fume. The ultra-high strength centrifugal shaped square beam installed on the wall is composited with the upper slab concrete and then subjected to a service load. Horizontal shear stress is generated by bending between the centrifugal molding beam and the floor plate, which causes the beam and floor plate to perform composite behavior through shear connections such as studs and rebars. In this study, a flexural load test was performed on a mock-up specimen that was synthesized by fabricating an RC slab on top of a 100 MPa-class centrifugal shaped beam produced at the factory. proven reliability.

  • This paper aims at investigating the bending strength of high-strength concrete beams with compressive strength of 80 MPa. The experimental parameters included nominal yielding strength of rebar with 400 and 600 MPa, rebar ratio ranging from 0.98 to 1.97%, and shear span-effective depth ratios (a/d) of 6.0 and 4.8. Experimental results were discussed regarding load-deflection relationship, ductility, bending strength, and prediction of bending strength of beams. Test results indicate that the use of high-strength rebar increased bending strength but decreased ductility. As span-effective depth ratio increased, the ductility of test beams decreased. In addition, test results of bending strength were compared with predictions from the current KCI code, Eurocode 2 and Korean Highway Design Specification (KHDC). The design code predictions for bending strength underestimated the experimental results. Therefore, the current design code predictions for bending strength of high-strength concrete beams would provide conservative design. Predictions of bending strength from KCI code using strength reduction factors and those from Eurocode 2 as well as KHDC using material factors were similar each other.
