The Link between Birds and Dinosaurs: Aves Evolved from Dinosaurs (새와 공룡의 연계성: 조류는 공룡으로부터 진화)

  • Aves including chickens are currently one of the most representative vertebrates on the planet. More than 10,000 bird species are distributed among various regions around the world. Dinosaurs, which evolved from archosaurs, were once assumed to have gone extinct during the Cretaceous-Paleozoic extinction period. Since the mid-1990s, abundant dinosaur fossils have been found in China and various other parts of the world. Research articles on phylogenetic, evolutionary, and genomic studies of fossil taxa show that birds are living theropod dinosaurs. This review describes the link between birds and dinosaurs based on studies of their skeletal structures, feathers, respiratory organs, chromosomes, and metabolism. Birds are the only theropod dinosaurs that survived the mass extinction 66 million years ago. Dinosaurs did not go extinct and we are still living in the age of the dinosaurs.

Types of Middle School Students' Responses to Anomalous Data related to Dinosaur Extinction (공룡의 멸종 관련 불일치자료에 대한 중학생의 반응유형)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the types of middle school students’ responses to dinosaur extinction inconsistent with the students’ previous conceptions. The types of texts about ‘the cause of dinosaur extinction’ were developed; one that was based on students’ previous ideas, while the other was based on conflicting materials. The students’ responses to the conflict materials were classified into six types: rejection, reinterpretation, uncertainty, belief decrease, partial theory change, and conceptual change. These results show that the use of conflict materials does not always promote conceptual change. Therefore, teachers will be able to help students change their conceptions in science classrooms by understanding students’ various responses to conflict materials and designing instructional strategy concretely.

High School Students' Ideas and Analysis of Responses Types to Alternative Hypotheses about Cause of Dinosaur Extinction (공룡의 멸종 원인에 대한 고등학생의 생각과 대안적 가설에 대한 반응 유형 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate high school students' ideas related with dinosaur extinction, to classify students' responses types with alternative hypotheses of inconsistent with their ideas, and then to examine their cognitive conflict levels and the degree of ideas change. To investigate students' ideas, we analyzed responses 98 eleventh graders of a high school in Anyang area. The results of this study were as follows: First, most of the students responded a large scale asteroid impact with the cause of dinosaur extinction, and rest of them responded changed Earth's climate accompanying tectonic activity, extreme volcanic activity, shortage of food, disease(virus) and decrease of their habitat. Also, they thought that dinosaur was exterminated not by just one reason but by several complex reasons. Second, the students' responses of alternative hypotheses were classified into six types: rejection, reinterpretation, uncertainty, belief decrease, partial theory change, and theory change. Third, except rejection and reinterpretation types, other four types were arousing of cognitive conflict and the percentage of the students who felt cognitive conflict was 62.3% and that of the students who took the theory change was just 6.1 %.

The Relation between Preservice Teachers' Philosophical Views on Science and Types of Responses to Alternative Hypotheses (예비교사들의 과학철학적 관점과 대안적 가설에 반응하는 유형과의 관계)

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the relation between preservice teachers' philosophical views on science and types of responses to alternative hypotheses. To identify preservice teachers' philosophical views on science, the extraterrestrial impact theory and the volcano-greenhouse theory, alternative hypotheses related to dinosaur extinction were administered to 37 elementary preservice teachers and 52 secondary preservice teachers. Subjects were required to write down their ideas before and after reading the alternative hypotheses, and then the dimensions of responses to initial ideas were analyzed. To analyze, Soh's Philosophical Perspectives Prove(PPP) was used. The results of this study were as follows: (a) elementary and secondary preservice teachers' philosophical views on science corresponds to eclecticism, (b) the main types of responses were partial theory change in elementary preservice teachers and rejection in secondary preservice teachers, (c) preservice teachers' philosophical views on science and types of responses were eclecticism-partial theory change in elementary preservice teachers and eclecticism-rejection in secondary preservice teachers.

Text Mining Analysis of News Articles Related to 'Space Hazard' ('우주 위험' 관련 뉴스 기사의 텍스트 마이닝 분석 연구)

  • This study aimed to confirm the status of media reports on space hazards using topic modeling analysis of media articles that are related to space hazards for the past 12 years. Therefore, Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) analysis was performed by collecting over 1200 space hazards articles between 2010 and 2021 on solar storm, artificial space objects, and natural space objects from BIGKins news platform. The articles related to solar storm focused on three topics: the effect of solar explosion on satellites; effect of solar explosion on radio communication in Korea, centered on the Korean Space Weather Center; and relationship between aircrew and space radiation. The articles related to artificial space objects focused on three topics: the threat of space garbage to satellite and space stations and the transition of useful objects into space junk; the relationship between space garbage and humanity as shown in movies; and the effort of developed countries for tracking, monitoring, and disposing of space garbage. The articles related to natural space objects focused on two topics: International Space Agency's tracking and monitoring of near-Earth asteroids and the countermeasures of collisions, and the evolution and extinction of dinosaurs and mammals, with a focus on the collisions of asteroids or comets. Therefore, this study confirmed that domestic media play a role in conveying dangers of space hazards and arousing the attention of public using a total of eight themes in various fields such as society and culture, and derived education method and policy on space hazards.
