The electrochemical reduction of methylene blue (MB) in 1.0${\times}$10-2 M KNO3 aqueous solution was investigated by direct current (DC), differential pulse (DP) polarography, cyclic voltammetry (CV) and controlled potential coulometry (CPC). The electrode reduction of melthylene blue was processed CE reaction mechanism by two electrons transfer at the first reversible wave (- 0.18 volts vs. Ag/AgCl). MB was strongly adsorbed on the stationary mercury electrode and the reduction product of conptrolled potential electrolysis was rapidly auto-oxidized in air to the original methylene blue. Upon the basis of interpretation of cyclic voltammogram with pH change, possible CE electrode reaction mechanism was suggested.
Saponite was synthesized from talc by hydrothermal method. The starting material was prepared by adding ($NO_3$)$Al_3$$.$$9H_2$O and Mg($NO_3$)$_2$$.$$6H_2$O solution to the talc powder. which was previously activated in air at 800 $^{\circ}C$ together with $Na_2$$CO_3$. The alkalinity of the solution was controlled by $NH_4$OH solution. The autoclaving was carried out in the closed stainless steel vessel (about 1 liter) for 40 hours under the pressure of 25 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$ at $ 230^{\circ}C$ The characterization of the reaction product shows that saponite was crystallized successfully. After the experimental results, pressure was not sensitive parameter in the range of 25 ∼ 75 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$, but longer reaction time results in better crystallinity.
The influence of ultrasound frequency, dissolved gases, and initial concentration on the decomposition of sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate(DBS) aqueous solution was investigated using ultrasound generator with 200 W ultrasound power. The decomposition rates at three frequencies(50, 200, and 600 kHz) examined under argon atmosphere were highest at 200 kHz. The highest observed decomposition rate at 200 kHz occurred in the presence of oxygen followed by air and argon, helium, and nitrogen. The effect of initial concentration of DBS on the ultrasonic decomposition was decreased with increasing initial concentration and would depend upon the formation of micelle in aqueous solution. It appears that the ultrasound frequency, dissolved gases, and initial concentration play an important role on the sonolysis of DBS. Sonolysis of DBS mainly take place at the interfacial region of cavitation bubbles by both OH radical attack and pyrolysis to alkyl chain, aromatic ring, and headgroup.
In this research, we investigate electrical performance and electrochemical properties of carbon supported Pt (Pt/C) that is synthesized by polyol method. With the Polyol_Pt/C that is adopted for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) as cathode of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), their catalytic activity and ORR performance and electrical performance are estimated and compared with commercial Pt/C(Johnson Mattey) catalyst. Their electrochemically active surface (EAS) area are measured by cyclic voltammetry (CV), respectively. On the other hand, regarding ORR activity and electrical performance of the catalysts, (i) linear sweeping voltammetry by rotating disk electrode and (ii) PEMFC single cell tests are used. The CV measurement demonstrate EAS of Polyol_Pt/C is compared with commercial JM_Pt/C. In case of Polyol_Pt/C, its half-wave potential, kinetic current density are excellent. Based on data obtained by half-cell test, when PEMFC single cell tests are carried out, current density measured at 0.6V and maximum power density of the PEMFC single cell employing Polyol_Pt/C are better than those employing commercial Pt/C. Conclusively, Polyol_Pt/C synthesized by modified polyol process shows better ORR catalytic activity and PEMFC performance than other catalysts.

This study investigates the characteristics of thermal decomposition of an epoxy-based intumescent paint using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and numerical simulation. A mathematical and numerical model is introduced to describe mass loss profiles of the epoxy-based intumescent coating induced by the thermal decomposition process. The decomposition scheme covers a range of complexity by employing simplified 4-step sequential reactions to describe the simultaneous thermal decomposition processes. The reaction rates are expressed by the Arrhenius law, and reaction parameters are optimized to fit the degradation behavior seen during thermogravimetric (TG) experiments. The experimental results show a major 2-step degradation under nitrogen and a 3-step degradation in an air environment. The experiment also shows that oxygen takes part in the stabilization of the intumescent coating between 200 and $500^{\circ}C$. The simulation results show that the proposed model effectively predicts the experimental mass loss as a function of time except for temperatures above $800^{\circ}C$, which were intentionally not included in the model. The maximum error in the simulation was less than 3%.
Sonochemical synthesis of fullerene oxides $[C_{70}O_n](n=1{\sim}2)$ by fullerene$[C_{70}]$ and metal hexacarbonyl complexes $M(CO)_6$(M=Cr, Mo, W) took place under air atmosphere. The reactivity of fullerene$[C_{70}]$ and several metal hexacarbonyl complexes $M(CO)_6$(M=Cr, Mo, W) under same ultrasonic condition increased in the order of $Mo(CO)_6$ > $W(CO)_6$ > $Cr(CO)_6$. The MALDI-TOF-MS, UV-visible spectra, and HPLC analysis confirmed that the products of sonochemical reaction were $[C_{70}O_n](n=1{\sim}2)$.
The surface film, which is formed on graphite negative electrodes during the initial charging, is a key component in lithium secondary batteries. The battery reactions are strongly affected by the nature of the surface film. It is thus very important to understand the physicochemical properties of the surface film. On the other hand, the surface film formation is a very complicated interfacial phenomenon occurring at the graphite/electrolyte interface. In studies on electrode surfaces in lithium secondary batteries, in-situ experimental techniques are very important because the surface film is highly reactive and unstable in the air. In this respect electrochemical atomic force microscopy (ECAFM) is a useful tool for direct visualizing electrode/solution interfaces at which various electrochemical reactions occur under potential control. In the present review, mechanism of surface film formation and its correlation with electrolyte are summarized on the basis of in-situ ECAFM studies for understanding of the nature of the surface film on graphite negative electrodes.
Gas and liquid flow characteristics were investigated in an internal circulation airlift reactor using a single nozzle for a gas distributor. In three reactors with different diameters of the downcomer and heights of the riser, the gas holdup in the individual flow zone and the impulseresponse curve of tracer for an air-water system were measured for various gas velocities and reactor heights. Experimental results showed that the flow behavior of bubbles in the riser was the slug flow due to strong coalescences of bubbles and that the bubble flow pattern in the downcomer was the transition bubble flow for the smaller diameter of the downcomer, however, it was the homogeneous bubble flow for the larger one. And mean gas holdups in the individual flow zone and the reactor were greatly increased with decreasing the diameter of the downcomer for the equal ratio of height of the top section to that of the riser. Also, the mixing time was much effected by the height of the top section of reactor and for the equal ratio of height of top section to that of the riser, it was increased with increasing the diameter of the downcomer and the height of the riser. Flow characteristics of liquid were mainly varied with the bubble flow pattern in the downcomer and the size of the top section of reactor. And circulation velocities of liquid in the riser were increased with increasing gas velocities and the size of the top section of reactor, and for the equal ratio of height of top section to that of the riser, they were increased with increasing the diameter of the downcomer and the height of the riser.
