Mixing Characteristics of Various Cavity Shapes in SCRamjet Engine (스크램제트 엔진 내부 Cavity 형상 변화에 따른 혼합 성능 특성)

  • In combustor of SCRamjet of air-breathing engine type, the flow duration time is very short because of the supersonic air flow. In this short duration, the whole process of combustion should be done, so it is very important to study supersonic combustion technologies. In this study, we focus fuel-air mixing enhancement method using cavity and conducted 3-dimensional Navier-Stokes computational analysis. Cavity height is fixed by 10mm, length is changed from 0 to 40mm. There is a supersonic jet injection downstream of the cavity and the hole size is 1mm. As a result, the higher ratio of cavity length/height is, the higher value of vorticity gets. The increased area of vorticity expands to upper and sidewise combustor. However, the stagnation pressure loss which generates thrust loss becomes higher when the vorticity is higher. Considering these result, we can conclude that optimized design which considers the highest mixing performance and the least stagnation pressure loss is needed.

  • A feasibility study is performed for practical application of a Ventilating Water-Jet(VWJ) propulsor which attracts new attention as a candidate propulsor for super-high speed vessels. Super-cavitating foil sections are adopted for the rotor blades since the rotor is operating at ventilating condition. Wedge type and cavitator type foil sections are used for the design of rotor blades. Other geometric characteristics of rotors are selected from the Kaplan type ducted propeller rotors. The test section of KRISO cavitation tunnel is modified to perform open-water tests of the VWJ propulsors. The tests are performed both at fully-submerged and free-jet conditions. Ventilation occurred at the free-jet condition by sucking the air in the downstream side of the rotor, which easily develops as super-cavitation when the rotor operates at lower advance coefficients. Spoilers are attached at the trailing end of the pressure side of the blade section, in order to increase the lift force.

Performance of Airlift Pumps for Water Circulation and Aeration (물 순환 및 에어레이션용 에어리프트 펌프의 성능)

  • Airlift pumps were tested to evaluate their pumping and aeration capacities. The pumps were 34.5 inch long made of 2, 3, 4 and 6 inch nominal diameter PVC pipes. An one hp air blower was used to supply the air. The air-flow rate was measured by an anemometer type air-flow meter and air pressure was level changes in a water tank from which water was pumped. Aeration by the pumps was tested by the standard aeration test method with the center of pump outlet positioned 3 inches above water surface. Oxygen concentrations in water were measured to determine aeration rate. As pumping head increased by water level draw-down in the tank water flow decreased while air flow increased. The reduction rate of water flow was higher with 4 and 6-inch pumps. Small pumps showed very minor changes in the reduction. Aeration rates were similar among 3, 4, and 6 inch pumps. With one hp air blower 6-inch pump at the minimum pumping head achieved the best performance in terms of water circulation.

Enhancement of combustion efficiency of a air-cooled combustor system with single F.D. Fan Using CFD (전산유체역학을 이용한 단일 송풍기가 적용된 공냉식 연소설비의 효율개선)

  • This study investigated the enhanced combustion efficiency of an "air-cooled combustion system" with single F.D. fan, and performed a numerical analysis for the operation and design conditions to increase the combustion efficiency. The combustion efficiency in an actual combustor was compared before and after the structure modification. Numerical analysis for application of a single fan revealed the difficulty of forming a turbulence for circular combustion conditions. This is because the supply ratio of combustion air supplied into 2 flow paths becomes irregular in the combustion furnace due to a change in friction force and pressure in each flow path. Subsequently, two methods of supplying air into the combustion furnace were analyzed numerically to obtain the optimal combustion conditions of an air-cooled combustion system. The first method involved injecting the preheated combustion air after a 180~360 degree rotation from the outer wall, whereas in the second method, the combustion air was injected into the combustion furnace in a tangential direction after primary heat exchange outside the combustion furnace, by applying a rotatable vane structure in the combustion furnace. Results reveal that application of a single F.D. fan to the air injection into a rotatable combustion furnace is desirable for optimization of the combustion conditions for applying a duct structure having a dual cooling wall for the cooling of the outer wall of the combustion furnace, and for maintaining perfect mixing in the combustion furnace. We therefore confirmed enhanced combustion efficiency by comparing the actual combustion efficiency before and after structure modification.

Thermal Design of a Cooling Coil for Building Air Conditioning (건물 공조용 냉수 코일의 열 설계)

  • The surface of the cooling coil becomes dry, wet or partially wet depending on the operating condition. Thus, a proper design of the cooling coil should include a heat transfer analysis on dry, wet or partially wet surfaces. In this study, an elementary model, which analyzes the cooling on an elementaty basis, is proposed. Comparison of the predictions of the model with experimental data of the cooling coil revealed that heat transfer rates were predicted within 10.1%, airside pressure drop within 11.1% and sensible heat ratio within 5.7%. The model was used to investigate the effect of water circuitory on cooling coil performance.

  • 에탄올과 같은 저온 상변화물질의 팽창과 응축과정에서 발생하는 압력과 진공상태를 이용하여 물을 양수하는 물펌프는 태양열과 같이 에너지강도는 약하지만 그 자원이 무한하고 청정한 에너지원을 이용하기에 매우 이상적인 장치이다. 이와 관련한 국내 연구로서는 김 등(2002)에 의한 펜탄의 증기압을 이용한 물펌프장치의 에너지변환실험과 작동사이클 과정에서의 열역학적인 해석을 통한 성능분석이 있다. 장치의 설계와 관련하여 Kwant 등(1981)은 작동물질의 응축액을 가열부측으로 되돌리기 위한 방법으로 응축부와 물탱크, 공기탱크를 분리하여 설계한 바 있고, 온도변화에 따른 탱크효율에 대해 분석하였다.   • Oscillating water column is the most widely used ocean energy converting systems all over the world. The operating performance is influenced by the efficiencies of the two converting stages in the OWC chamber-turbine integrated system. In order to consider the effects of the turbine, the orifice model are carried out. The VOF based Numerical Wave Tank (NWT) is utilized to simulate the water column oscillation inside the chamber and the results are compared with corresponding experimental data. This paper reviews the state of the art in interaction among wave elevation inside the chamber and air flow rate in the duct, which are considered the turbine effects. Effects of incident wave conditions and several shape parameters on the operating performance of OWC chamber are investigated numerically. The effects of the impulse turbine on the integrated system and interaction among the wave elevation, pressure and air flow velocities variations are investigated.

  • The effects of the physical properties of primary flow on the performance of a supersonic ejector were investigated. Axisymmetric annular injection type supersonic ejector was used for the study of the effects of molecular weight and the specific heat at constant pressure on the ejection performance. Test gases include; air, $CO_{2}$, Ar, $C_{3}H_{8}$, and $CCl_{2}F_{2}$ for different values of gas properties. As the molecular weight and CP of the primary gas increase, the secondary flow pressure increases at the same primary stagnation pressure and this behavior results from the combined effects of molar specific heat or specific heat ratio.

A Study on the Explosion Riskiness with Flying of Activated Carbon (활성탄의 부유중 폭발 위험성에 관한 연구)

  • We investigated the weight loss according to temperature using TGA in order to find the thermal hazard of brand-new activated-carbon and disused activated-carbon dusts, and the properties of dust explosion in variation of the specific surface area of their dust with the same particle size. Using hartman's dust explosion apparatus which estimate dust explosion by electric ignition after making dust disperse by compressed air, dust explosion experiments have been conducted by varying concentration and size of activated carbon dust. The explosion pressure of both activated carbon increased as the specipic surface area increased. The results indicated that brand-new activated-carbon of which specific surface area was larger three to four times than that of disused activated-carbon was much easier of dust explosion.

Effects of Aspect Ratio of a Fuel Injection Nozzle into a Supersonic Air Stream on Combustion Characteristics (초음속 공기유동으로의 연료 분사노즐 종횡비 변화에 대한 연소특성 연구)

  • This paper is to investigate the combustion characteristics with a three dimensional chemical reacting flow on the aspect ratio of an exit configuration of the slit type nozzle for the fuel injection and to device the methods of combustion/mixing enhancement. The results show that both inside inflow and slit side vertices should be considered from a viewpoint of the mixing. The combustion efficiency becomes the smallest at aspect ratio, where the aspect ratio is less and more than unity, respectively. The total pressure loss becomes the largest at aspect ratio of unity due to the high penetration. All results imply that a streamwise very long slit is desirable with respect to the combustion and the pressure loss.
