An Experimental Study on the Combustion Characteristics of a Catalytic Combustor for an MCFC Power Generation System (MCFC 발전시스템용 촉매연소기의 연소 특성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • In the MCFC power generation system, the combustor supplies a high temperature mixture of gases to the cathode and heat to the reformer by using the off-gas from the anode; the off-gas includes high concentrations of $H_2O$ and $CO_2$. Since a combustor needs to be operated in a very lean condition and avoid local heating, a catalytic combustor is usually adopted. Catalytic combustion is also generally accepted as one of the environmentally preferred alternatives for generation of heat and power from fossil fuels because of its complete combustion and low emissions of pollutants such as CO, UHC, and $NO_x$. In this study, experiments were conducted on catalytic combustion behavior in the presence of Pd-based catalysts for the BOP (Balance Of Plant) of 5 kW MCFC (Molten Carbonate Fuel Cell) power generation systems. Extensive investigations were carried out on the catalyst performance with the gaseous $CH_4$ fuel by changing such various parameters as $H_2$ addition, inlet temperature, excess air ratio, space velocity, catalyst type, and start-up schedule of the pilot system adopted in the BOP.

Effect of the Application of a Suspended and a Mixing-in-Pipe Type Aerator on the Liquid Fertilization of Pig Manure Slurry (현수, 배관 내 혼합 폭기방식 적용이 돼지분뇨 슬러리의 액상 비료화에 미치는 영향)

  • Three types of diffuser systems were manufactured and applied to investigate the effect of liquid fertilization of pig manure slurry by application of aeration processes. In the first type reactor, commonly used diffuser system, which diffuse air upward by diffusing aerator fixed at the bottom of the reactor is installed. In case of the second type, air diffuser is installed 10 cm above of the bottom of a reactor. In the third type reactor, the venturi-type air diffuser is installed at circulation pipe, which return pig slurry in the reactor(mixing-in-pipe process). The pig manure slurry separated to solid/liquid was flowed into the experimental reactor, and left as it for one week to precipitate solids. The concentration of organic matter, T-N, T-P and BOD in the raw pig manure slurry flowed into the reactor of bottom-fixed type aeration process were 1.82%, 4,400 mg/L, 360 mg/L and 13,542 mg/L, respectively. After aeration the concentration of organic matters, T-N, T-P and BOD in the slurry were 2.01%, 4,400 mg/L, 420 mg/L and 16,824 mg/L, respectively. The concentration of organic matter, T-N, T-P and BOD in the mixing-in-pipe type changed from 1.58%, 3,700 mg/L, 260 mg/L and 15,735 mg/L to 1.96%, 4,000 mg/L, 340 mg/L, and 18,098 mg/L, respectively. Changes of the concentration of organic matter, T-N, T-P and BOD of the pig manure slurry collected from the middle layers of two aeration reactors; bottom aeration process and the mixing-in-pipe process, were 10.4%, 0%, 16.7% and 24.2% and 24.0%, 8.1%, 30.8% and 15.0%, respectively. The thickness of foam layer generated on the surface of pig manure slurry in aeration tank was thinner in mixing-in-pipe reactor than bottom-fixed type aeration reactor.

  • A plate-fin tube type heat exchanger has a lighter weight, approximately 30%, than the conventional circular-fin type condenser of household refrigerator. Because the low weight means low cost, it can have significant effects on the growth of related businesses if similar performance can be guaranteed. To check the possibility of the use of such a plate fin-tube condenser, experimental evaluations were performed in this study. Four different condensers including a conventional circular fin-tube condenser were used for the test. A well designed refrigerant supply system was used to supply similar conditions with a refrigerator, and the heat transfer rate and pressure drops of air side were measured precisely. As a result, the plate fin-tube type condensers showed a lower heat transfer rate of more than 13% than the conventional circular fin-tube type condenser, but the air side pressure drop was reduced and the heat transfer per unit weight was increased. Therefore, it shows the possibility of the use of a plate fin-tube type condenser after optimizing the air flow path and increasing the air flow to make a similar heat transfer rate.

Development of Low-Cost, Double-Speed, High-Precision Operation Control System for Range Extender Engine (레인지 익스텐더 전기자동차 엔진용 저가형 2단속도 고정밀 운전제어시스템 개발)

  • The range extender vehicle runs on a mechanism that allows the small power generation engine to start in the most efficient specific operating range to charge the battery and extend the mileage. In this study, we developed a step motor type intake air supply system that replaces existing throttle body system to develop a simple low cost control logic system. The system was applied to the existing base engine, and in order to improve the performance by increasing the amount of intake air, the effect of changing the length of the intake and exhaust manifold was experimentally examined. As a result, the Type B intake air control actuator operated by one step motor showed higher performance than the Type A in all the operation region, but the performance was lower than that of the base engine due to the increase of flow resistance. To improve this, it was confirmed that the engine performance was improved at both speeds of 2200rpm and 4300rpm when the 140mm adapter was installed in the intake manifold and when the newly designed 70mm exhaust manifold was applied. Through this process, high - precision operation control was realized by connecting the generator load to the optimized engine for the range extender electric vehicle. Experimental results showed that the speed change rate was within ${\pm}2.5%$ at 2200rpm in 1st stage and 4300rpm in 2nd stage and the speed follow-up result of 610 rpm/s was obtained when the speed was increased from 2200rpm to 4300rpm.

  • Combined cycle power plant is a system where a gas turbine or a steam turbine is used to produce shaft power to drive a generator for producing electrical power and the steam from the HRSG is expanded in a steam turbine for additional shaft power. The temperature of the exhaust gases from a gas turbine ranges from $400{\sim}650^{\circ}C$, and can be used effectively in a heat recovery steam generator to produce steam. Combined cycle can be classed as a topping and bottoming cycle. The first cycle, to which most of the heat is supplied, is a Brayton gas turbine cycle. The wasted heat it produces is then utilized in a second process which operates at a lower temperature level is a steam turbine cycle. The combined gas and steam turbine power plant have been widely accepted because, first, each separate system has already proven themselves in power plants as an independent cycle, therefore, the development costs are low. Secondly, using the air as a working medium, the operation is relatively non- problematic and inexpensive and can be used in gas turbines at an elevated temperature level over $1000^{\circ}C$. The steam process uses water, which is likewise inexpensive and widely available, but better suited for the medium and low temperature ranges. It therefore, is quite reasonable to use the steam process for the bottoming cycle. Recently gas turbine attained inlet temperature that make it possible to design a highly efficient combined cycle. In the present study, performance analysis of a 3 pressured combined cycle power plant is carried out to investigate the influence of topping cycle to combined cycle performance. Present calculation is compared with acceptance performance test data from SeoInchon combined cycle power plant. Present results is expected to shed some light to design and manufacture 150~200MW class heavy duty gas turbine whose conceptual design is already being undertaken.

Development of Heated-Air Dryer for Agricultural Waste Using Waste Heat of Incineration Plant (소각장 폐열을 활용한 농업폐기물 열풍 건조장치 개발)

  • To manufacturing of solid fuel by reuse of the wastes, the drying unit which have 500 kg/hr of drying capacity was developed and experimentally evaluate the performance. The spinach grown in Nam-hae island were used for the experiments and investigated of the heated-air drying characteristics as the inlet amount of raw materials, raw material stirring status, conveying type and drying time. The drying air heated by the energy derived from the steam which is supplied from the incineration plant. The moisture contents of raw materials were measured 85.65%. The inlet flow rate of drying air made a difference as the depth of the raw materials loaded on the drying unit and temperature has showed 108~144℃. The drying speed of the mixed drying more than doubled as that of non mixed drying under the same drying type, inlet amount, drying time and drying air temperature. In each experiment, the drying capacity have showed over 500 kg/hr. A drying efficiency of the ratio of drying consumption energy to input energy was 33.46%, lower than the average of 57.76% for the 157 conventional dryers. Because developed dryer must have a drying time of less than one hour, it is considered that the dry efficiency has been reduced due to the loss of wind volume during drying. If waste heat from incineration plant is used as a direct heat source, the dry air temperature is expected to be at least 160℃, greatly improving the drying capacity.

  • The purpose of the study is to collect basis data for to establish standard administrative processes of liquid fertilizer treatment. From this survey we could make out the key point of each step through a case of effective liquid manure treatment system in pig house. It is divided into six step; 1. piggery slurry management step, 2. Solid-liquid separation step, 3. liquid fertilizer treatment (aeration) step, 4. liquid fertilizer treatment (microorganism, recirculation and internal return) step, 5. liquid fertilizer treatment (completion) step, 6. land application step. From now on, standardization process of liquid manure treatment technologies need to be develop based on the six steps process.

Thermal Performance of PV Cells Exposed to Irradiation by a Parabolic Trough Concentrator (PTC형 태양열 집열기로 조사되는 PV cell의 열적 성능)

  • 본 연구에서는 PV cell이 직달 일사에 노출되는 경우와 집광된 태양광에 조사되는 경우의 성능을 비교하는 한편 집광기의 형태에 따른 열적 성능을 검토하고자 하였다. PV cell은 본질적으로 반도체의 특성을 가지므로 작동온도의 상승에 따라 성능이 저하된다는 사실이 알려져 있으며, 태양조사의 강도 및 밀도 등 특성에 따라서도 성능의 변화를 예상할 수 있다. 그러나 이러한 성능변화에 관련된 인자들과 그 영향의 크기에 대한 정량적인 기술자료가 부족하므로 설치와 이용에 한계가 있는 것이 현실이다. 인공태양 장치(solar simulator)를 이용하여 0.7에서 1.2 sun 범위의 태양 조사 환경에서 결정질 실리콘계 PV cell과 집광형 PV cell의 성능을 검토하였다. 집광에 사용한 PTC는 집광면적의 폭이 500 mm이며, 집광 조사면적이 최소 10 mm인 경우 이론적 최대 집광비가 50이었다. PTC의 축방향으로는 균일한 태양조사가 있게된다는 것을 가정하여 모델의 길이는 간편한 실험을 위해 150에서 500 mm의 범위에서 제작하였다. 수평으로 놓인 PTC의 상부 초점 위치로부터 집광면이 아래 쪽에 위치할수록 집광 조사 면적이 증가하므로 PV cell의 크기에 따라 PTC 초점의 위치로부터 거리를 결정하였다. 한편, PTC 자체의 성능도 촛점거리와 집광면 폭의 비에 따라 달라질 수 있다는 가정 하에, 포물면의 최저 위치로부터 촛점거리는 각각 300, 400 및 500 mm가 되도록 세가지 형태를 제작하여 사용하였다. 동일한 형태의 PTC에서 PV cell의 동일한 설치 위치에서도 최고 $110^{\circ}C$ 범위의 PV cell의 작동 (표면) 온도에 따른 성능의 차이를 관찰하기 위해 셀의 후면을 냉각시키는 경우와 그렇지 않은 경우를 비교하였다. PV cell의 표면 온도 측정을 위해서, 후면의 온도와 같이 광선 차단 효과의 우려가 없는 경우에는 열전대를 설치하였으며, 셀의 전면 온도 측정을 위해서는 비접촉식 적외선 온도계를 사용하였다. 냉각 방법으로는 공기를 이용한 자연대류와 액체를 사용하는 강제대류의 경우를 고려하였으며, 필요에 따라 적절히 설계된 히트싱크를 설치하여 비교 실험을 진행하였다. 강제대류 냉각의 경우는 항온조를 사용하여 순환하는 냉각수의 유량과 공급온도를 변화시킴으로써 PV cell의 작동온도를 조절하고, 이에 따른 발전 성능의 변화를 관찰하였다. 본 연구에서 도출한 실험 및 분석 결과는 PV cell의 설치 환경과 작동온도의 변화에 따라 그 성능 변화를 예측할 수 있는 기술적 자료를 제공함으로써 에너지 이용의 합리화를 도모하는데 기여할 수 있을 것이다.

Treatment of gas from the vent of a fine chemical plant using a pilot-scale biofilter (파일럿 규모 바이오필터를 이용한 정밀화학공장 배출가스의 처리)

  • A pilot-plant biofilter (1750 mm W ${\times}$ 2750 mm L ${\times}$ 2000 mm H) packed with polyurethane foam (20 mm W ${\times}$ 20 mm L ${\times}$ 20 mm H) was installed in an fine chemical plant emitting gas streams containing ethyl alcohol, ethyl acetate, and dichloromethane. The biofilter was successfully operated for 30 days under highly fluctuating incoming concentrations (maximum 3500 ppm) at a residence time of 36 and 60 sec. Both ethyl alcohol and ethyl acetate were removed more than 95%, but dichloromethane removal was less than 50%. Malodor was also removed more than 90% from 17 days after start up.

Combustion Characteristics Study using Hyper-mixer in Low-enthalpy Supersonic Flow (하이퍼 혼합기를 사용한 저엔탈피 초음속 유동장 내연소 특성 연구)

  • In this study, a forced ignition method with a plasma jet torch is studied in Mach 2 laboratory scaled wind-tunnel. The hyper-mixer is used as a mixer. For two normal injection cases, the one is collided against a wedge plate of the hyper-mixer and the other is directly injected into the cold main flow. For the first case, the hyper-mixer disperses the injected fuel, leading to the mixing enhancement. Furthermore, the fuel-air mixture is provided into the plasma hot gas, which enhances the combustion performance. However, the direct injection into the main flow method spends amount of fuel without ignition in the cold supersonic flow. In the end, for the forced combustion, it is important to supply the fuel-air mixture into the heat source.
