  • In this paper, the effects of lateral displacement on the thrust, lift force and (guide force) are investigated by 3-D Finite Element Analysis (FEA) in controlled-PM LSM which has some strong points that electrical power can be minimized and the thrust and lift force can be simultaneously obtained. The variations of airgap flux density and the forces concerning lateral displacement have been analyzed and the effect of lateral displacement and airgap length on the motor performance have been investigated in detail by analysis and experiment results. As the result of this study, the characteristics of PM-LSM concerning with the change of lateral placement and airgap have been made clear quantitatively.

  • Due to the increasing significance of durability, much researches on carbonation, one of the major deterioration phenomena are carried out. However, conventional researches based on fully hardened concrete are focused on prediction of carbonation depth and they sometimes cause errors. In contrast with steel members, behaviors in early-aged concrete such as porosity and hydrates (calcium hydroxide) are very important and may be changed under carbonation process. Because transportation of deteriorating factors is mainly dependent on porosity and saturation, it is desirable to consider these changes in behaviors in early-aged concrete under carbonation for reasonable analysis of durability in long term exposure or combined deterioration. As for porosity, unless the decrease in $CO_2$ diffusion due to change in porosity is considered, the results from the prediction is overestimated. The carbonation depth and characteristics of pore water are mainly determined by amount of calcium hydroxide, and bound chloride content in carbonated concrete is also affected. So Analysis based on test for hydration and porosity is recently carried out for evaluation of carbonation characteristics. In this study, changes in porosity and hydrate $(Ca(OH)_2)$ under carbonation process are performed through the tests. Mercury Intrusion Porosimetry (MIP) for changed porosity, Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) for amount of $(Ca(OH)_2)$ are carried out respectively and analysis technique for porosity and hydrates under carbonation is developed utilizing modeling for behavior in early-aged concrete such as multi component hydration heat model (MCHHM) and micro pore structure formation model (MPSFM). The results from developed technique is in reasonable agreement with experimental data, respectively and they are evaluated to be used for analysis of chloride behavior in carbonated concrete.

  • This study examined the granite, quartzite, phyllite, schist, and gneiss as aggregate resources among the original rock distributed in the Chungju-Goesan area. The granite distributed in the study area is mainly composed of Jurassic biotite granite, and the quartzite layer is from the Daehyangsan quartzite Formation distributed on the upper part of the Gyemyeongsan Formation and the Hyangsan-ri dolomitic limestone Formation. In addition, phyllite is pophyrytic phyllite-schist from the Hwanggangri Formation of the Okcheon group, schist is chlorite schist, from the Munjuri Formation of the Okcheon group, and gneiss is porphyroblastic gneiss which is the upper part of the Seochangri Formation. Aggregate quality evaluation factors of these rocks included fineness modulus, absorption, unit weight, absolute dry density, solid content, porosity, resistance to abrasion, and soundness. In the case of granite, it was found to be partially unsatisfactory in terms of unit weight, solid content, porosity, and resistance to abrasion. Gneiss was found to be out of the standard values in resistance to abrasion and schist in porosity and solid content. As for the overall quality of aggregate resources, it was analyzed that quartzite, gneiss, and phyllite showed excellent quality. Aggregate quality tests are performed simply for each rock, but the rock may vary depending on the morphology of the mineral. Therefore, when analyzing and utilizing the quality evaluation of aggregate resources, it will be possible to use them more efficiently if the rock-mineralological research is performed together.

  • In this paper, the compressive strength, pore characteristics, and chloride diffusion coefficient were measured at 28 days of age in order to examine the influence of curing conditions for the chloride diffusion and pores in concrete cured under extreme condition. According to the test results, the compressive strength was improved as the relative humidity increased. Additionally, higher compressive strength was observed when the specimens were cured at 35℃. However, the compressive strength of specimens cured at 45℃ was decreased. Meanwhile, the chloride diffusion coefficient decreased with an increase in curing temperature and relative humidity, indicating a difference compared to the trend observed for compressive strength. On the other hand, the excellent correlation showed between compressive strength and chloride diffusion coefficient, porosity and chloride diffusion coefficient when the concrete cured under water. However, when the concrete cured under extreme condition, this correlation was significantly reduced compared to the water curing case. In contrast, it has been determined that there is no significant correlation between the average pore size and chloride diffusion coefficient, regardless of the curing conditions.

  • Air voids in hardened concrete have an important influence on concrete durability such as resistance of freezing and thawing, permeability and surface scaling resistance. Linear traverse method and point count method in ASTM standard method have been widely used to estimate the air void system in hardened concrete. However, these methods are not used at present time, because they are is exhausted much time and effort. In previous study, air voids system of concrete was estimated by spacing factor. The purpose of this study organizes image analysis method by analyzing air contents, air voids distributions by diameters, air voids system as well as spacing factors after hardened concrete. The experimental variables institute of depth of specimen(top, middle, bottom), air contents(AE contents 0, 0.01, 0.03%).

  • Smoldering is a non-flaming combustion mode, characterized by thermal degradation and c charring of the virgin material, evolution of smoke and emission of visible glow. A big fire may @ occur even in a confined environment having a limited amount of oxygen, due to smoldering c combustion through a porous solid material. This paper presents a theoretical analysis on the effect of smoldering combustion on fire occurrence based on a report about fire investigation of a real f fire accident. It is assumed that the propagation of the smolder wave is one-dimensional, d downward, opposing an upward forced flow and steady in a frame of reference moving with the s smolder wave. Smoldering combustion is modeled by a one-step reaction mechanism, without c considering pyrolysis. It is found that dominant parameters controlling smoldering combustion i include mass flux of oxidizer entering the reaction zone and void fraction of solid fuel. It is also found that the mechanism of transition to flaming is critically influenced by these two parameters.

  • Volcanic rocks in Jeju island show vesicular structure caused by various environmental factors, and indicate the differences in geological and mechanical characteristics from region to region. Previous studies on the volcanic rocks in Jeju island have been actively conducted on geological and chemical properties in terms of geophysics and geology and on physical and mechanical properties in terms of engineering. But comprehensive comparative analysis on physical and mechanical properties of volcanic rocks in Jeju island is not conducted. In this study, the physical and mechanical properties of volcanic rocks in Jeju island were compared and analyzed comprehensively through the existing research papers and reports about volcanic rocks in Jeju island. As a result, it was found that the relationship between absorption (porosity) and apparent specific gravity is commonly linear and could be represented as two different linear approximations. In addition, it was found that the relationship between P-wave velocity and S-wave velocity and the relationship between absorption (porosity) and uniaxial compressive strength could be classified more clearly, considering two different linear relationships in absorption (porosity) and apparent specific gravity.

  • Radon gas is a colorless, odorless, tasteless gas that occurs when uranium, a natural radioactive material in rocks and soils, collapses. 85% of the annual radiation exposure of the human body is due to natural radiation, of which 50% is radon. According to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) survey, 62 out of 1,000 smokers and 7 out of 1,000 nonsmokers are exposed to lung cancer when exposed to radon gas for a long time. In order to reduce the risk of radon gas, activate carbon was used to fabricate matrix, and the pore properties and radon reduction properties were investigated. When the activate carbon was used, the radon gas concentration was drastically reduced and the graph was changed as the measurement period became longer. The pore distribution and microporous properties, which are one of the material properties of activate carbon, can be grasped.
