We explore the effect of particle shape and size on 3-dimensional (3D) network and pore structure of porous earth materials composed of glass beads and silica gel using NMR micro-imaging in order to gain better insights into relationship between structure and the corresponding hydrologic and seismological properties. The 3D micro-imaging data for the model porous networks show that the specific surface area, porosity, and permeability range from 2.5 to $9.6\;mm^2/mm^3$, from 0.21 to 0.38, and from 11.6 to 892.3 D (Darcy), respectively, which are typical values for unconsolidated sands. The relationships among specific surface area, porosity, and permeability of the porous media are relatively well explained with the Kozeny equation. Cube counting fractal dimension analysis shows that fractal dimension increases from ~2.5-2.6 to 3.0 with increasing specific surface area from 2.5 to $9.6\;mm^2/mm^3$, with the data also suggesting the effect of porosity. Specific surface area, porosity, permeability, and cube counting fractal dimension for the natural mongolian sandstone are $0.33\;mm^2/mm^3$, 0.017, 30.9 mD, and 1.59, respectively. The current results highlight that NMR micro-imaging, together with detailed statistical analyses can be useful to characterize 3D pore structures of various porous earth materials and be potentially effective in accounting for transport properties and seismic wave velocity and attenuation of diverse porous media in earth crust and interiors.

This study aims at scrutinizing the relationships among the frequency distribution of voids the relative density and the shear strength for the three types of different granular materials. The main results summarized are as follows: (1) The frequency distribution of void ratio of glass beads can be approximated by the negative exponential distribution proposed by Shahinpoor (1981), while as the particle shape changes from spherical to angular the frequency of the denser voids decreases and the distributions are well presented by the beta distribution. (2) For all materials, the standard deviation of void ratio increases with decreasing both the relative density of the material and sphericity of particle. (3) It was found that shear strength of the material was a function of not only the mean void ratio and its standard deviation, but also of the shape of the probability density function of the distribution of void ratio. The more the frequency distribution of void inclines towards the denser voids, the higher the shear strength of the material and vice versa.

We prepared biostimulant balls using sea sediment mixed with biostimulants viz acetate, nitrate and sulfate. The Biostimulant balls were coated with Cellulose Acetate (CA) and Polysulfone (PS) to control the release of the biostimulants. SEM images showed that CA coating was porous and irregular in the inside and very uniform and tight like beehive while PS coating was the same in the inside and outside and not porous. Biostimulants release was found to be high in sea water compared to distilled water. The release of nitrate was higher compared to sulfate. In turbulent environment the release of bionutrients was 50% higher than static environment.
The hydro-mechanical behavior of the Earth's crust is strongly dependent on the fractional volume and geometrical structure of effective pore spaces. This study aims to understand the characteristics of pores using electrical impedance. We measured the electric impedance of core samples (diameter, 38-50 mm; length, 70-100 mm) of three types of granite (Hwangdeung, Pocheon, and Yangsan) and two types of sandstone (Boryung and Berea) with different porosities and pore structures, after saturation with saline water of varying salinities. The results show that resistance decreases but capacitance increases with increasing salinity of the pore fluid. For a given salinity, the resistivity and formation factor are reduced with increasing porosity of the rocks, and the capacitance increases. Berea sandstone shows anisotropy in resistance, tortuosity, and cementation factor, with these factors being highest normal to bedding planes. This result indicates that the connectivity of pores is weakest normal to bedding. In conclusion, the electrical characteristics of the tested samples are related not only to their porosity but also to the pore geometry.

Gas hydrate dissociation can generate large amounts of gas and water in gas hydrate bearing sediments, which may eventually escape from a soil skeleton and form voids within the sediments. The loss of fine particles between coarse particles or collapse of cementation due to water flow during heavy or continuous rainfall may form large voids within soil structure. In this study, the effect of void formation resulting from gas hydrate dissociation or loss of some particles within soil structure on the strength of soil is examined. Glass beads with uniform gradation were used to simulate a gas hydrate bearing or washable soil structure. Glass beads were mixed with 2% cement ratio and 7% water content and then compacted into a cylindrical sample with five equal layers. Empty capsules for medicine are used to mimic large voids, which are bigger than soil particle, and embedded into the middle of five equal layers. The number, direction, and length of capsules embedded into each layer vary. After two days curing, a series of unconfined compression tests is performed on the capsule-embedded cemented glass beads. Unconfined compressive strength of cemented glass beads with capsules depends on the volume, direction and length of capsules. The volume and cross section formed by voids are most important factors in strength. An unconfined compressive strength of a specimen with large voids decreases up to 35% of a specimen without void. The results of this study can be used to predict the strength degradation of gas hydrate bearing sediments in the long term after dissociation and loss of fine particles within soil structure.

In terms of induction motor analysis, magnetic energy conversion takes place into mechanical energy in air gap. Therefore, flux distribution in air Sap has to be analyzed in detail more than other place of induction motor. In this paper, the air gap permeance of induction motor, which was effected by means of skewed angle and fringing, was analyzed.
Laboratory investigations of physical (density and porosity), acoustic (velocity and velocity anisotropy), and electrical (resistivity and resistivity anisotropy) properties in deep-sea carbonate sequences at DSDPsites 288 and 289 in the western equatorial Pacific were made and correlated as a function of diagenesis. Profile of resistivity shows almost a mirror image of velocity indicating that electrical resistivity can be a useful variable to determine the diagenetic stage. Some fluctuations in acoustic and electrical properties near the zones of cherty and siliceous limestones for both sites imply significant changes in pore geometry due to interbedded silica. The significantly reduced pore throat size by the presence of silica which provides excess calcium carbonate to adjacent pore spaces is partly responsible for several jumps in acoustic and electrical properties of the zones. These observed geophysical data are interpreted as the result of silica diagenesis influencing carbonate diagenesis.
