  • This study reports the influence of vocid geometry on fracture closure and permeability from numerical experiments. As the aperture distributions of rock fractures are characterized by statistical methods, synthetic fractures have successfully been simulated in this way. Based on the generated fracture models, models for fracture closure and flow calculation have been developed. A fracture closure model has been developed by considering the asperity compression and half-space deformation, and flow calculations have been performed using a finite difference method adopting a local cubic law. The results of numerical experiments have shown that the increase in the aperture spatial correlation leads the fracture closure and the decrease in fracture permeability to increase. Also, it has been indicated that there is an implicit relation between fracture normal stiffness and permeability. The importance of this study is to enhance the understanding the hydro-mechanical behavior of fractured rock massed due to engineering projects.

  • This study is to analyze numerically the spatial behaviors of the solute transport in a spatially correlated variable-aperture fracture under the effective normal stress conditions. Numerical results show that the solute transport in a fracture is strongly affected by the spatial correlation length of apertures and applied effective normal stress. According to increasing spatial correlation length, the mean residence time of solute is decreased and the tortuosity and Peclet number (is a dimensionless number relating the rate of advection of a flow to its rate of diffusion) is also decreased. These results mean that the geometry of the aperture distribution is favorable to the solute transport as the spatial correlation length is increased. However, according to the applied effective normal stress is increased, the mean residence time and tortuosity have a tendency to increase but the Peclet number is decreased. The main reason that the Peclet number is decreased, is that the solute is displaced by one or two channels with relatively higher local flow rate due to the increment of contact areas by increasing effective normal stress. Moreover, based on numerical results of the solute transport in this study, the exponential-type correlation formulae between the mean residence time and the effective normal stress are proposed.

  • This paper investigates numerically characteristics of the fluid flow in spatially correlated variable-aperture fractures under effective normal stress conditions. Spatially correlated aperture distributions are generated by using the geostaistical method (i.e. Turning Bands algorithm). In order to represent a nonlinear relationship between the effective normal stress and the fracture aperture, a simple mechanical formula is combined with a local flow model. Obtained numerical results indicate that the fluid flow is significantly affected by the geometry of aperture distribution varying according to the applied effective normal stress as well as the spatial correlation length of aperture distribution. Moreover, by using results simulated in this study, the modified Louis formula representing the relationship between the effective normal stress and the effective permeability of fracture is proposed.

  • In this paper, the modeling procedure of random field with an elasto-plastic finite element algorithm and probability of failure on closely-spaced tunnel were investigated. Local average subdivision (LAS) method which can generate discrete random variables fast and accurately as well as change the resolution in certain region was used. And correlated value allocating and weighted average method were suggested to implement geometrical characteristics of tunnel. After the probability of failure on the test problem was thoroughly investigated using random finite element method, the results were compared with the deterministic strength reduction factor method and single random variable method. Of particular importance in this work, is the conclusion that the probability of failure determined by simplified probabilistic analysis, in which spatial variability is ignored by assuming perfect correlation, can be estimated from the safety factor determined by strength reduction factor method. Also, single random variable method can lead to unconservative estimates of the probability of failure.

  • Active acoustic array signal was measured in the East Sea and the South sea and spatial coherence was analyzed. The measurement of ambient noise, target reflection signal, sea surface backscattering signals took place including environmental measurements of sea wind, and vertical temperature profiles. The spatial coherence of ambient noise was lower than that of target reflection signal in the South Sea. The spatial coherence of target reflection signal was above 0.5 over all array length. The spatial coherence of sea surface backscattering signal was higher in high incident angle. The maximum non-dimensional array length was 3.0 ($26^{\circ}$) and 3.5 ($32^{\circ}$) to have spatial coherence above 0.5 in the East Sea. To find a design criteria for array configuration and array performance, more measurements of temporal and spatial coherence will be needed continuously in the future.

  • This study was designed to evaluate the correlations between tongue with skeletal pattern and intermaxillary space in Class II malocclusion adult patients. Craniofacial skeletal pattern was analyzed on the lateral cephalometric radiograph and the subjects were devided two groups by facial ratio, the 30 subjects of hyperdivergent group and the 30 subjects of hypodivergent group. The size and posture of tongue and intermaxillary space were measured on the lateral cephalometric radiograph. These data were statistically analyzed to examine significant differences between both groups and compared the correlation between tongue with skeletal measurements and intermaxillary space in each group. The results of this study were as follows. 1. In comparison of the tongue and intermaxillary space, the measurement of TS/IS showed significantly larger in hyperdivergent group and PIH and IS showed significantly larger in hypodivergent group. There were no statistically significant differences in the measurements of the height and posture of tongue. 2. In correlation between tongue with craniofacial skeletal measurements, the length and height of tongue showed the highest correlation with AFH(anterior facial height) in both groups(p<0.01). And that measurements showed high correlation with PFH(posterior facial height) in hypodivergent group. 3. In both groups, most measurements of tongue showed high correlation with intermaxillary space and the height and space of tongue showed high correlation with AIH and PIH(p<0.01).

  • Kim and Lee (2005) suggested Minimum Entropy Deconvolution (MED) to estimate the temporal sequence of the relative recharge. However this study by Kim and Lee (2005) was just related to the verification of the conceptual approach with MED. In this study, we try to characterize the applicability of MED in the case of spatially heterogeneous recharge (distance from recharge area). Simulated results were recorded with some specific sampling points. Estimated results from this study show higher than 0.8 in cross-correlation with the original recharge sequence. In addition, the physical and mathematical meanings of the applied filter length was also investigated. It was revealed that the length of filter is highly related to the spatial distance between recharge area and the monitoring site, and the apparent shape of hydraulic head change.

  • In this paper, we propose a digital watermarking method for still images, in which the human visual system (HVS) is used in the discrete cosine transform (DCT) domain. The modulation transfer function (MTF) of the HVS model is employed to increase the invisibility of the inserted watermark in images. The proposed watermarking method is shown to be robust to several common image processing techniques, including lowpass filtering and cropping. Also, using the energy relationship of the DCT, we derive the equation that directly computes the watermark weighting factor in the DCT domain for the specified peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) of the still image and the length of watermark to be inserted. The difference between desired PSNR and PSNR in spatial domain is within 0.07dB for the 7 test images.

  • In this study, a total of 326 data on a variety of geometric parameters of pick cutters and the corresponding cuttable rock conditions were collected and built as a database. Statistical analysis of the database showed that there is a significant positive correlation between the parameters that define the geometry of a pick cutter, especially between the parameters related to the length of a pick cutter and the geometry of a tungsten carbide insert. The diameter of a pick cutter shaft was also strongly correlated with the geometry of the inserts. On the other hand, it was difficult to find a clear correlation between the parameters for the rock conditions defined by the four conditions and the geometric parameters of pick cutters, which may be due to the uncertainty of the rock mass and the fact that the application of a pick cutter is presented as a range rather than a numerical single value. However, the mean values of geometric parameters of pick cutters tend to increase as a rock mass becomes harder. However, the pick length parameters are found to decrease as a rock mass becomes harder, which may be a way to reduce the moments that can occur when using long pick cutters in a hard rock condition.
