  • Most of hydrological analyses in the field of water resources are launched by gathering and analyzing rainfall data. Several methods have been developed to estimate areal rainfall from point rainfall data and to fill missing or ungaged data. Thiessen and Reciprocal Distance Squared(RDS) methods whose parameters are only dependent on inter-station distance are classical work in hydrology, but these techniques do not provide a continuous representation of the hydrologic process involved. In this study, kriging technique was applied to rainfall analysis in Nakdong river basin in order to complement the defects of these classical methods and to reflect spatial characteristics of regional rainfall. After spatial correlation and semi-variogram analyses were performed to perceive regional rainfall property, kriging analysis was performed to interpolate rainfall data for each grid Thus, these procedures were enable to estimate average rainfall of subbasins. In addition, poor region of rainfall observation was analyzed by spatial interpolation error for each grid and mean error for each subbasin.

  • An oscillatory motion of the natural convection in a two dimensional, partially divided square enclosure heated from below, and fitted with a partition is investigated numerically. The enclosure was composed of the lower hot and the upper cold horizontal walls and the adiabatic vertical walls, and a partition was situated perpendicularly at the mid-height of the one vertical insulated wall. The governing equations are solved by using the finite element method with Galerkin method. The computations were performed with the variation of the length and the thermal conductivity of the partition, and Rayleigh number based on the temperature difference between horizontal walls and the enclosure height with water(Pr=4.95). also, the effect of the inclination angles was studied for the transition to the oscillating flow. As the results, it was found that the intensity and frequency of oscillatory motion were affected significantly by the Rayleigh number and the length of partition. The effect of oscillatory motion was weaken with the increase of the thermal conductivity of partition. The inclination angle for the transition was raised with the increase of Rayleigh number and the length of partition.

  • This paper concerns the effect of orientation and geometric characteristics of a fracture zone on the tunnel behavior using a numerical investigation. A parametric study was executed on a number of drill and blast tunnelling cases representing different fracture and tunnelling conditions using two and three dimensional finite element analyses. The variables considered include the strike and dip angle of fracture zone relative to the longitudinal tunnel axis, the width and the clearance of the fracture zone, the tunnel depth, and the initial lateral stress coefficient. The results of the analyses were examined in terms of the tunnel deformation including crown settlement, convergence, and invert heave as well as shotcrete lining stresses. The results indicate that the tunnel deformation as well as the shotcrete lining stress are strongly influenced by the orientation of the fracture zone, and that such a trend becomes more pronounced for tunnels with greater depths.

  • In this study, often the spatial distribution of precipitation was analyzed using the quantile with regional frequency analysis and spatial analysis to find out the detail distribution of extreme precipitation for preventing the disaster in the region of Gangwon. The hourly precipitation data of 66 stations in Gangwon were used. As the results of regional frequency analysis, it shows that the generalized logistic (GLO) distribution is the best for the region of Gangwon. As the results of spatial analysis, the quaniles have high vaules nearby Seolakdong, Daegwallyeong and Cheongil as the duration of precipitation increase, and the change of spatial distribution occurs severely according to the duration of precipitation. The spatial characteristics of precipitation appears clearly as the return period of quantile increases. As the results of the spatial distribution of precipitation in Gangwon heavy quantiles usually are appeared in Yongdong, and the spatial distributions of quantile in Yongseo are various according to the duration and the return period of quantile. Therefore, to estimate more accurate quantiles in Gangwon, various geographical and weather conditions are considered additionally for the regional precipitation frequency analysis.

  • When planning for streams, adequate and definite flood control should be in the primary consideration of the planner; likewise, flood control is the basic prerequisite for the recent river restoration taking place nationwide. Planning 'safe' streams and rivers that are predictable and controllable begins from accurate survey data. In this research, we will create streams in 3D terrain models and apply them through hydraulic analysis and restoration using smart geospatial information. This process allows the extraction of more accurate data regarding streams and rivers, which makes possible precise hydraulic analysis that is superior in details to the conventional methods. The study also proposes optimal vertical section interval for efficient data processing on hydraulic analysis, applicable when LiDAR data is utilized on hydraulic analysis of urban streams. The study proposes 3D design plan and various applications for spatially planning and restoring rivers and streams.

  • In order to trace the lateral post-buckling behaviors of thin-wafled space frames, a geometrically nonlinear finite element formulation is presented by applying incremental equilibrium equations based on the updated Lagrangian formulation and introducing Vlasov's assumption. The improved displacement field for symmetric thin-walled cross sections is introduced based on inclusion of second order terms of finite rotations, and the potential energy corresponding to the semitangential rotations and moments is consistently derived. For finite element analysis, tangent stiffness matrices of the thinwalled space frame element with 7 degrees of freedom including the restrained warping for each node are derived by using the Hermition polynomials as shape functions. A co-rotational formulation in order to evaluate the unbalanced loads is presented by separating the rigid body rotations and pure deformations from incremental displacements and evaluating the updated direction cosines of the frame element due to rigid body rotations and incremental member forces from pure deformations. Finite element solutions for the spatial buckling and post-buckling analysis of thin-walled space frames are presented and compared with available solutions and other researcher's results.

  • This paper presents a finite element procedure to estimate the ultimate strength of space frames considering spread of plasticity. The improved displacement field is introduced based on the inclusion of second-order terms of finite rotations. All the non-linear terms due to bending moment, torsional moment, and axial force are precisely considered. The concept of plastic hinges is introduced and the incremental load/displacement method is applied for elasto-plastic analyses. The initial yield surface is defined based on the residual stress, and the full plastification surface is considered under the combined action of axial forces, bending and torsional moments. The elasto-plastic stiffness matrices are derived using the flow rule and the normality condition of the limit function. Finite element solutions for the ultimate strength of space frames are compared with available solutions and experimental results.

  • This paper concerns the stress singularity at the interface corner of the viscoelastic adhesive layer bonded between rigid adherends, subjected to a uniform transverse tensile strain. The characteristic equation is derived in the Laplace transformed space, following Williams, and the transformed characteristic equation is inverted analytically into real time space for the viscoelastic model considered here. The order of the singularity is obtained numerically. The time-domain boundary element method is employed to investigate the nature of stresses along the interface. Numerical results show that the order of the singularity increases with time while the free-edge stress intensity factors are relaxed with time.
