  • This study explores the utilization of common marine wastes, specifically seashells, such as oysters and cockles, as alternative fine aggregates in construction materials. The considered seashells were cleaned and pre-processed for use as a substitute for aggregate in mortar. Cement mortar specimens were prepared under different conditions, such as substitution ratios and the cleaning status of the seashells. The compressive strength of the mortars specimens was evaluated, and the solid and porous structures of each specimen were analyzed using microstructure analysis methods such as XRD, SEM, and micro-CT. The results confirmed that oyster and cockle seashells are composed of different calcium carbonate polymorphs, and their microstructural characteristics influence the mechanical properties of the cement mortar specimens.

  • Recently, the mortar crack on floor is very serious in construction field, e.g. the crack due to plastic shrinkage and the crack due to drying shrinkage. To prevent this kind of crack, optimum mix proportions not only satisfying the required workability but also minimizing the unit water content were selected. And the expansion admixtures were used to compensate shrmkage of mortar. The water /cement ratio used in construction field is about 64% by the investigation. Even if the water /cement ratio of mortar is reduced, floor mortar is still able to have the required workability by the appropriate use of the fine aggregate with high fineness mo'dulus and superplastizer. The equations hetween mortar flow and water /cement ratio, sand /cement ratio, fineness modulus of fine aggregate were proposed in this study. And the proposed equation may provide available mix proportions of floor mortar.

  • Physical characteristics of aggregates affect the workability and strength of mortar and concrete, which include their fineness ratio, particle size distribution and water absorption. The workability of construction materials decreases if the incorporated fine aggregates show improper size distribution of their particles. This study shows the particle size effect on the rheological behavior of mortar and provides basic information for evaluating its workability. A mini-slump flow test was adopted to evaluate the workability of mortar. In addition, its plastic viscosity and yield stress were measured using a rheometer for building materials. The sand samples were prepared by sieving river sand and sorting out with their particle sizes. As a result, it was observed that the fines less than 0.7 mm increases the yield stress and plastic viscosity of the mortar samples. If the fines are less than 0.34 mm, the water absorption of the fines dominates change on the workability.

  • This study aims to obtain technical data for improvement of utilization of Blast Furnace Slag(BFS), recycled aggregate in the future by complementing fundamental problems of BFS such as manifestation of initial strength and excessive alkali quantity as well as weakness of recycled fine aggregate through manufacturing of recycled fine aggregate mortar using BFS. The recycled aggregate includes the cement paste hardened as the surface and the type of the aggregate, which contains plenty of calcium hydroxide($Ca(OH)_2$) as well as the unhydrated cement. Accordingly, the objectives of this study are to inspect the manufacturing the recycled fine aggregate mortar used with blast furnace slag, to consider the effects of the recycled aggregate on the strength development of ground granulated blast furnace slag, and then to acquire the technical data to take into consideration the further usages of the recycled aggregate and blast furnace slag. In eluted ions from recycled aggregate, it showed that there were natrium($Na^+$) and kalium($K^+$), expected to be flown out of unhydrated cement, as well as calcium hydroxide($Ca(OH)_2$). Application of this water to mix cement mortar with ground granulated blast furnace slag was observed to expedite hydration as calcium hydroxide($Ca(OH)_2$) and unhydrated cement component were expressed to give stimuli effects on ground granulated blast furnace slag. The results of the experiment show that the recycled aggregate mixed with blast furnace slag has comparatively higher hydration activity in 7 day than the mortar not mixed with one in 3 day mortar does, causing the calcium hydroxide in the recycled fine aggregate to work on as a stimulus to the hydration of ground granulated blast furnace slag.

  • Utilization of demolished-concrete as recycled aggregate has been researched for the purpose of substituting for insufficient natural aggregate, saving resources and protecting environment. There, however, are some Problems not only the large difference of dualities in recycled aggregates but also a little deterioration of mechanical properties in recycled aggregate concrete in comparison with that of natural aggregate concrete. In this study, the test results of freez and thaw durability of concrete with demolished-concrete recycled aggregate(DRA) arc as follows. Improvement of crushing process is an important assignment because that adhered mortar on source-concrete recycled aggregate(SRA) and DRA highly affects thc qualifies of recycled aggregate. The compressive strength of recycled aggregate concrete was not highly different in comparison with that of control concrete. But the resistance to penetration of Cl in recycled aggregate concrete was shown smaller than that of control concrete because of adhered mortar on recycled aggregate. The resistance to frcezing and thawing of recycled aggregate concrete was highly different due to adhered mortar on recycled aggregate, and durability factor of concrete with NA-SRA and DRA was more decreased than that of control concrete. On the other hand, durability factor of concrete with AA-SRA was larger than that of control concrete. It, therefore, is necessarily required that recycled aggregate including adequate entrained air should be used for satisfying the freez and thaw durability of recycled aggregate concrete.

  • In order to evaluating applicability of RAP (recycled aggregate powder) in mortar, in this study, physical and mechanical tests was carried out. Material characteristics of recycled aggregate and RAP were evaluated and the mechanical properties of mortar replaced with RAP were analyzed. Test result of sieve analysis showed that as the milling time increased the fineness modulus was decreased and the distribution of 0.6 mm particle size was found to increase. The fluidity of mortar mixture substituted with RAP tended to increase than Plain mixture. It was result that the increasing fluidity was affected by unreacted surplus water in the mortar as the binder was replaced with RAP. From the compressive strength result of the mortar subjected to RAP, it was found that the RAP was able to replace up to about 10% of unit binder weight although the compressive strength of mortar was decreased as the RAP replacement increased. From the above study, it can be concluded that the physical properties of RAP satisfied the quality standard of aggregate for replacement with fine aggregate. Moreover, in case of the RAP was replaced up to 10% of unit cement weight, it was able to be possible to improve fluidity and compressive strength of mortar.

  • Recently, the use of recycled aggregates from construction waste has been introduced as a solution for environmental problems and aggregate shortage. In spite of the various methods to promote recycling of recycled aggregate, the use of recycled aggregate as the structural aggregate has been limited because the quality of recycled aggregate(especially recycled fine aggregate) has been considered lower than that of natural aggregate. In this work, recycled fine aggregate was immersed for an hour in acrylic resin solutions of various concentrations to improve its quality, the appropriate immersion concentration was selected by measuring the absorption capacity and skeletal density of the recycled fine aggregate, and mortar specimens were prepared to evaluate the mechanical performance in order to propose a applicable treatment process to promote the use of recycled fine aggregate. According to the experimental results, as the acrylic resin concentration increased, the absorption capacity and skeletal density of the recycled fine aggregate decreased. The absorption capacity was lowest at acrylic resin concentrations around 6 to 8 %. However, among mortar specimens made of recycled fine aggregate immersed in acrylic resin solution, the compressive strength was the highest at 4 % acrylic resin concentration, suggesting that the use of higher concentration acrylic resin solution can actually lower the compressive strength of mortar.
