  • This study deals with the petrographic examination of aggregates(ASTM C 295) which is one of the methods to diagnose the quality of aggregates for concrete artifacts. A number of examinations including size and sieve analysis, test on the coating material, description of the weathering and contamination condition, petrographic description, and qualitative and quantitative analyses on the rocks and minerals potential to alkali-aggregates reactivity are carried out to examine the quality of aggregates. Petrographic description method examined on the fluvial aggregates from Maewhacheon A, B area, Uljin-gun, Kyungnam province shows that weathering grade ranges from F(fresh) to WS(slightly weathered) and coating material and contamination are not in a harmful condition. The weight percentage of the alkali-aggregates reactive minerals or structurally unstable rocks of the aggregates from study area covers 26% and 19% of all aggregates, respectively. So it is necessary to further identify their quality through the chemical(ASTM C 289) and mortar-bar method (ASTM C 227).

  • The experimental investigation aims at developing controlled low strength materials (CLSM) using a self-cementitious fly ash (FA) as a binder and a bottom ash (BA) as a aggregate. The fly ash and bottom ash used in this study were obtained from a circulating fluidized bed combustion boiler (CFBC) which produces relatively high CaO containing fly ash. To find the optimum mixing condition satisfying flow consistency and unconfined compression strength (UCS), the CLSM specimens were prepared under various mixing conditions, including two types of aggregate and different weight fractions between fly ash and aggregate. Additionally, the prepared specimens were evaluated using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results of this study demonstrate that the water content satisfying flow consistency ranges from 42% to 85% and the flowability is improved with increasing the fraction of aggregate in whole mixture. The USC ranges from 0.3 MPa to 1.9 MPa. The results of UCS increases with increasing the fraction of aggregate in FA-sand mixtures, but decreases with increasing the fraction of aggregate in FA-BA mixtures. SEM images and XRD patterns reveal that the occurrence of both geopolymerization and hydration. The results of this study demonstrate that CFBC fly ash could be used as an alternative binder of CLSM mixtures.

  • The purpose of this study, looking to which the recycled fine aggregates from waste concrete have a lot of problems as a material for structure purpose, is applying the recycled fine aggregate to Self-Compacting Concrete(In the reminder of this paper, it often referred to as SCC) by using the characteristic which the powder containing the recycled fine aggregates can increase strength and liquidity. In this study, that is, the recycled fine aggregate powder is appropriate for developing high strength(over 40 MPa) and liquidity(JSCE 2 grade), the characteristic of the SCC and it was increased the ratio of mixing the recycled fine aggregates emerging from waste concrete and the normal fine aggregates by 25%, making differential in total 5 levels and applied to SCC. After all, this study was reviewed the physical properties of the fresh concrete, analyzed the mechanical properties and durability of the hardening concrete and tried to ensure the possibility of utilizing the recycled fine aggregates as a material for SCC. As a result, this study reached a conclusion that among the 5-level replacement ratios of the physical, mechanical analysis and the durability characteristics, the normal fine aggregates could be applied up to a replacement ratio of 50% more than the recycled fine aggregates and resulted in a deterioration in performance the replacement ratio larger than 50%. It is judged that the applicability of the real structures should be followed up in order to check the possibility of applying the recycled fine aggregates to real life.

  • When concrete with slag powder or fly ash is under an accelerated carbonation test at early age, a very complicated carbonation behavior occurs since several reactions covering cement hydration, pozzolanic reaction, and carbonation reaction occu simultaneously. In particular, fine and coarse aggregates with poor quality were used, the trend with strength development and carbonation behavior was not clear. In this study, concrete samples with three design strength grade(24 MPa, 27 MPa, and 30 MPa) were manufactured with different aggregates site(A, B, and C). Compressive strength test were performed considering curing ages(7 and 28 days), and the accelerated carbonation tests were performed for 8 weeks for evaluating carbonation rate. The relationship between compressive strength and carbonation rate was analyzed considering mix properties and the aggregate site conditions. In addition, the minimum cover depth satisfying intended service life was obtained through carbonation design based on Domestic Design Code, and the necessities for improving design parameters (direction coefficient and effective water-binder ratio) were suggested.

  • This study investigates spalling properties of high performance concrete, 60MPa clan, made with the various types of coarse aggregate and adding ratio of polypropylene(PP) fiber. As experimental parameters, totally sixteen specimens of ${\phi}100{\times}200mm$ in size are prepared: one specimen for control without fiber, ten specimens with different coarse aggregate types, along with 0.05, 0.1, 0.15 percent of PP fiber in each. 1 hour fire test is conducted and then spalling appearance, spalling degree and residual compressive strength are examined. In addition, sit specimens made with two types of coarse aggregate site, along with same adding ratio of fiber are supplementally done, and only spalling properties is examined. Test results showed that control concrete and most specimens containing 0.05% of PP fiber exhibited 4 to 3 level of spalling degree, resulting severe explosive spalling, except for the specimen using basalt aggregate(Bc) showing 2 to 3 level of that. Especially, the Bc specimen containing 0.1% of the fiber exhibited that residual compressive strength value was 32%, which is 10% higher than other specimens using limestone or granite. Spalling resistance performance was also effective as aggregate size increase.

  • Fly ash (FA), byproduct from power plant has been actively used as mineral admixture for concrete. However, since bottom ash (BA) is usually used for land reclaim or subbase material, more active reuse plan is needed. Pond ash (PA) obtained from reclaimed land is mixed with both FA and BA. In this study, 6 PA from different domestic power plant are prepared and 5 different replacement ratios (10%, 20%, 30%, 50%, and 70%) for fine aggregate substitutes are considered to evaluate engineering properties of PA as fine aggregate and durability performance of PA concrete. Tests for fine aggregate of PA for fineness modulus, density and absorption, soundness, chloride and toxicity content, and alkali aggregate reaction are performed. For PA concrete, durability tests for compressive strength, drying shrinkage, chloride penetration/diffusion, accelerated carbonation, and freezing/thawing are performed. Also, basic tests for fresh concrete like slump and air content are performed. Although PA has lower density and higher absorption, its potential as a replacement material for fine aggregate is promising. PA concrete shows a reasonable durability performance with higher strength with higher replacement ratio. Finally, best PA among 6 samples is selected through quantitative classification, and limitation of PA concrete application is understood based on the test results. Various tests for engineering properties of PA and PA concrete are discussed in this paper to evaluate its application to concrete structure.

  • Currently more high flow and high performance concrete is used for construction of buildings in the world. However, when high flow and high performance concrete put high performance water reducing agent in quantity to improve flow, it has a negative effect on concrete structures since segregation arises from it though flow will be improved. There are naked-eye observation, coarse aggregate washing test, L Flow test for permeation among reinforcing rods and measurement of viscosity to judge concrete segregation resistance. However, it is difficult to apply them to practical affairs since they are very complicated and troublesome. Therefore, the study analyzed EIS dividing slump flow value into slump value, how to valuate concrete segregation resistance more easily, on the basis of the existing reference materials to propose EIS. As the results, in the event of high flow concrete, it is desirable that EIS value is prescribed to be less than 2.5 at the time of managing segregation. Also, at the time of prescribing EIS with performance, it is judged that it is desirable to manage segregation as less than 2.2 (Grade 1), 2.2$\sim$2.4 (Grade 2) and more than 2.6 (Grade 3).

  • A fire outbreak in a reinforcement concrete structure looses the organism by the different contraction and expansion of hardened cement pastes and aggregate, and causes cracks by thermal stress, leading to the deterioration of the durability. So concrete reinforcement structure is damaged partial or whole structure system. Therefore diagnosis of deterioration is needed based on mechanism of fire deterioration in general concrete structures. Fundamental information and data on the properties of concrete exposed to high temperature are necessary for accurate diagnosis of deterioration. In this study, it was presented data for the accurate diagnosis and selection of repair and reinforcement system for the deteriorated concrete heated highly, various concrete such as standard design compressive strength, fine aggregate and admixture were exposed to a high temperature environment. And fundamental data were measured engineering properties such as explosive spatting, ultrasonic pulse velocity and compressive strength.
