In concrete mix design we need the informations of the codes, the specifications, and the experiences of experts. However we can't consider all factors regarding concrete mix design. The final acceptance depends on concrete quality control test results. In this process we meet the uncertainties of materials. temperature, site environmental situations, personal skillfulness. and errors in calculations and testing process. Then the mix design adjustments must be made. Concrete mix design and adjustments arc somewhat complicated, time-consuming. and uncertain tasks. In this paper, as a tool to minimize the uncertainties and errors the neural network is applied to the concrete mix design. Input data to train and test the neural network are obtained numerically from the results of design following the concrete standard specifications of Korea. The 28-days compressive strengths which are variate according to the uncertainties and errors are considered. The results show that neural networks have a strong potential as a tool for concrete mix design.
This study was carried out to investigate and analyse the influence of maximum size of coarse aggregate and quality control of aggregate on the properties of shotcrete through the laboratory and field test. From the results of the test, as the maximum size of coarse aggregate decreased from 13 mm to 8 mm, plasticity property declined and compressive strength and dynamic modulus of elasticity of hardened concrete increased remarkably, so it was found that the aggregate size 8 mm was superior to 13, 10 mm in fluidity, constructability and durability. Therefore, it was advisable for well maximum size of coarse aggregate to apply to the 8mm aggregates through the Ready-mixed Method for quality control and minimum segregation.

This paper is the part of fundamental study considering whether the unprocessed water cooled blastfurnace slag, by-product of iron works, can be useful for some fine aggregate of mortar and concrete. The acquired results in this study show that the qualities of the water cooled blastfurnace slag produced in the state of raw material in the country in not good for using as a fine aggregate of mortar and concrete. To be used as a fine aggregate of concrete the qualities need to be improved in the process of manufacture.

This study investigates the effect of partial replacement with cement on the properties of blast furnace slag-based mortar. Recycled fine aggregate with various contents was used to activate the hydration of blast furnace slag in the mortar and compared its effect on strength development. Results showed that increasing cement and recycled fine aggregate increased the strength of mortar specimens. However, this study found that the mortar made with partial replacement of river sand with recycled fine aggregate of 20% developed a similar strength to the strength that cement with 10% can achieved.

In this research, the possibility of wasted refractory aggregate pulverized from refractory block as an expansive admixture and additional alkaline stimulant for class two and three blast furnace slag cements (BSC) was assessed with its high content of free CaO or free MgO. As the replacement ratios of wasted refractory powder and blast furnace slag were increased, flow and air content were decreased, while unit volume weight was increased under same conditions. Compressive strength of mortar was increased with increased replacement ratio of wasted refractory powder, especially, in the case of class three BSC, the highest compressive strength was obtained when wasted refractory aggregate was replaced 2%.

This study is analysis of effect of binder types and replacement ratio on the properties of blast furnace slag mortar using the recycled fine aggregates. The results of the study were was follows. Compressive strength was increased according to an increase in replacement ratio of fine particle cement and gypsum. Absorption was reduced according to an increase in replacement ratio of fine particle cement and recycled aggregate fine powder.

As the shortage of natural & good quality aggregate for concrete, it is needed development of alternative aggregate. At the present time, the crushed sand is widely used among the alternation aggregate, and the usage of crushed sand will be increased more and more. Generally, crushed sud is produced with wet process in domestic, but some manufacturing companies which are handicapped with local restrict are produced by dry process. In this study, analyzing the facilities of dry crushed sand, the quality properties of dry crushed sand was done by Korean Industrial Standards. Based on the quality results of dry crushed sand, the experiment of concrete with the dry crushed sand which is substitute for sea sand was done. As the results of basic qualities, the amount of 0.08 mm sieve passing ratio was over KS criteria, and the fineness modulus was higher than sea sand, and the other physical properties of dry crushed sand was similar to sea sand. The results of concrete experiment, according to the substitutive ratio of dry crushed sand is increased, the slump and air content of concrete was decreased by increase of fine particles of dry crushed sand, and the unit weight content, compressive & tensile strength of concrete were increased on the contrary. The physical properties of concrete used dry crushed sand were showed same tendency without relation to W/B. Consequently, if the fine particle contents of dry crushed sand was lower, it is judged that dry crushed sand is no problem to use for concrete aggregate and the amount of usage will be increased.

In this paper, a small-scale model testing system was developed using a series of small-scale model tests to analyze the mechanism of compaction pile formation and evaluate the quality of controlled grading aggregates proposed as an alternative material to the sand compaction pile (SCP) method and granular compaction pile (GCP). These are the most typical ground improvement methods in field practice, particularly for soft grounds. However, the SCP has faced difficulties due to the supply shortage of natural sand and the corresponding price surge of sand. The GCP is limited in marine soft grounds because of the failure occurring at the pile tip caused by excessive expansion of the deeper bulbs, leading to uneven bulb formation. The uniformity of compacted pile bulbs is critical to ensuring the bearing capacity and quality of the compaction pile. This study aims to evaluate the performance of the new material and controlled grading aggregates using small-scale model tests simulating field compaction process to investigate its potential application in comparison with SCP. The compaction piles are examined in four cases according to different materials used for compaction pile and clay strength. The compaction pile materials, which are made of sand and controlled grading aggregates, used in this study were compared to reveal the mechanism of the bulb creation. The experimental data confirm that the bulb formation quality of the traditional sand and the new material, controlled grading aggregates are comparable. The compaction pile made of controlled grading aggregates presents higher bearing capacity than that of marine sand.

The volume of construction waste material from the entire waste material volume in Korea is approximately 47.3% to take the biggest ratio, and from them, the waste concrete takes up approximately 62.8% that recycling is an urgent issue to address. Therefore, the government recommends more diverse and broader facilitation of the recycled aggregate in order to promote recycling the construction waste materials. In addition, when using concrete recycled aggregate in building, building standard such as floor area ratio and building height are being mitigation. The standard is a condition that mitigation the floor area ratio by up to 15% when using up to 25% of concrete recycled aggregate. Therefore, this study reviewed the relaxation of construction of construction standards when using concrete recycled aggregate in order to actively recommend the use of concrete recycled aggregate. And using the recycled coarse aggregate among the recycled aggregate, the appropriate mixing time in the batch plant according to the substitution rate was derived. In addition, using recycled aggregate admixture in order to improve the drying shrinkage, did comparative analysis about physical and mechanical property of concrete.

Blast furnace slag, a by-product of the steel industry, is mostly recycled as concrete admixture, but electric arc furnace slag has not been recycled to date. In particular, since electric arc furnace slag partially contains free lime (free-CaO) in the discharge, it is necessary to review this in order to recycle f or construction materials. Recently an atomizing process which is a method of rapidly cooling electric arc furnace slag has been developed and applied. Therefore, in order to use the fine aggregate of oxidized slag from electric furnace restored by this method as an aggregate for concrete, physical damage and chemical reviewing are required. In this study, a physical and chemical review was conducted on the fine aggregate of Electric Arc Furnace Oxidizing Slag (EFOS) as a by-product of the steel manufacturing process with atomizing process. In this experimental study, EFOS was experimentally examined about whether it can be used as concrete fine aggregate. Also, we intend to provide basic data for the future use of the EFOS fine aggregate. As a result of the experimental study, it was found that the fine aggregate of the EFOS satisfied the quality standards of the fine aggregate for concrete in most items specified by Korean Standard.
