  • Recent experimental data shows that the noticeable feature of irregular roughened spots on the fuel surface occurs during the combustion test. The generation of these unexpected patterns is likely to be resulted from the disturbed boundary layer due caused by wall blowing which is intended to simulate the process of fuel vaporization. LES without chemical reaction was conducted to investigate the flow characteristics at the near-fuel surface and the behavior of turbulent structures which is evolved by the wall blowing at the Reynolds number of 23,000. Cylindrical geometry was considered to get the most reality of the calculation results because real hybrid rocket motor is circular grain configuration. It was shown that the wall blowing pushed turbulent structures upwards making them tilted and this skewed displacement, in effect, left the foot prints of the structures on the surface. This change of kinematics may explain the formation of irregular isolated spots on the fuel surface observed in the experiment.

  • For spatial free vibration of non-symmetric thin-walled curved beams with shear deformation, an improved formulation is proposed in the present study. The elastic strain and the kinetic energies are first derived by considering constant curvature and shear deformation effects due to shear forces and restrained warping torsion. Next equilibrium equations and force-deformation relations are obtained using a stationary condition of total potential energy. And the finite element procedures are developed by using isoparametric curved beam element with arbitray thin-walled sections. Particularly not only shear deformation and thickness-curvature effects on vibration behaviors of curved beams but also mode transition and crossover phenomena with change in curvatures of beams are parametrically investigated. In order to illustrate the accuracy and the reliability of this study, various numerical solutions for spatial free vibration are compared with results by available references and ABAQUS's shell element.

  • In the case of horizontally curved bridges, the use of curved composite box girder bridges are increased due to its functionality and for aesthetical reason. As it compared with the open section, the steel box girder bridges have advantages to resistant of distortion and corrosion. In practice the grid analysis is conducted by utilizing only the cross beam. Since the stiffness of the concrete slab is not included in the grid analysis, the cross beam is induced the distribution of the live load. In this study the affects of the radius of curvature, the number of diaphragm and cross beam to the load distribution of the curved steel box girder bridge was investigated by applying the finite element method. The results indicate that the curvature of curved bridge had a large affect of the load distribution and as the curvature was increased the load distribution factor was increased. A single diaphragm at the center of girder is important role for the load distribution effects and structural stability, but additional diaphragm did not affect it as much. The affects of the cross beam to the load distribution were investigated and its influence was minor. It can be safely concluded that the addition of cross beam does not aid the purpose of the live load distribution. And the stiffness of concrete slab for the load distribution effects should be concerned in the design of curved steel box girder bridges.

  • A two-dimensional FEM program, which considers bending effects in the membrane fromulation, was developed under plane strain assumption for analyzing forming processes of an arbitrarily shaped draw-die of automotive panels. For the evaluation of bending effects with membrane elements, the bending equivalent forces and stiffnesses are calculated from the bending moment computed using the changes in curvature of the formed shape of two membrane ones. The curves depicted with 3 nodes are described by a circle, a quadratic equation, and a cubic equation, respectively, and in the simulation of the stretch/draw sections of an automotive inner panel, three different description results are compared each other. Also, the bending results are compared with membrane results and measurements in order to verify the validity of the developed program.

  • Manufacturing the complex surface plates in Stern and Stem is major factor in computing the processing cost of a ship. If these parts are effectively classified, it helps to compute the processing cost and find the way of cut-down on the processing costs. This study is intended to effectively classify surface plates. To solve this problem, we apply Pattern Classification of Neural-Networks.

  • We calculate the electron scattering amplitude with reduced angular momentum expansion(RAME) and compare it with the plane wave approximation. By using WKB approximation it is shown that the curvature correction factor given by RAME is originated from the source wave centrifugal potential energy. The factor also can be understood as an effective wave number correction factor in plane wave approximation. Angular momentum and its relationship with scattering amplitude is explicitly shown.

  • In this study, we investigate a design technology intended to radically increase the buckling strength of vertically curved panels. Recent studies proposed a buckling strength formula which properly reflects the effect on the local plate buckling strength of flat plates when they are stiffened by closed section ribs. Herein, we attempted to quantitatively evaluate this effect on curved panels and to reveal the correlations with the design parameters. The commercial finite element software, ABAQUS, was used to build a three dimensional numerical model and numerical parametric studies were conducted to evaluate the variation of the buckling strength. In the case of flat panels, the local buckling strength of stiffened curved panels increases proportionally with increasing rotational stiffness of the closed-section ribs. After attaining a limiting value, an obvious tendency was found that the local buckling strength of the stiffened curved panel would converge towards a fixed value when the panels are supported along both sides. The parametric studies performed using the influential design parameters confirmed that the estimated partially-restrained curved panel strength is well correlated with the proposed formula.
