  • Anaplastic carcinoma of the thyroid is one of the most malignant tumors and survival for longer than three years after diagnosis is exceptional. Multinucleated giant cells of osteoclastlike appearance are seen un some of the anaplastic carcinoma, but only three cases in which the diagnosis was made by fine needle aspiration (FNA) cytology are reported in the international literature. We experienced a case of anaplastic carcinoma with osteoclastlike giant cells in a 66-yr-old female, diagnosed by FNA cytology. The smears revealed two cell populations: multinucleated giant cells and large polygonal or spindle shaped malignant cells. The FNA cytodiagnosis of anaplastic thyroid carcinoma containing osteoclastlike giant cells was substantiated by subsequent biopsy.

As a result, first, the elements that form the urban landscape of historical and cultural environment have to be created by extracting elements from the subject standard for construction of the elements selected. As for the aspect of blending history, culture and environment, scenic and important architectural aspects were delineated. Second, based on selected components of the basic type of features and construction, roof types, vertical and horizontal elements were simulated after setting the criteria. Third, according to its historical cultural circumstances the man-made landscape and the traditional measure of the model, specific values of the elements for the formation of structures were evaluated by priority. A region characterized by old city houses constructed of objective elements can possibly be combined. In addition, a Hanok multi-family house fitted for modern life and a variety of models to develop and validate the possibility and utilization of this study can be expected.

  • This study was conduced to identify the preference and intake frequencies of traditional Korean foods by Chinese-Koreans in the Yanbian region of China based on the hometown of the female head of household. Data were collected from 261 Korean housewives living in Yanbian. Twenty-six kinds of daily food items were surveyed. Analysis of variance was used to compare the similarities and differences among the three groups, which were divided according to hometowns in North Korea, South Korea, and China. The results for the traditional Korean daily food preferences showed that housewives born in South Korea are more likely to prefer cereal soup, vegetables soup, and fermented rice punch than housewives from North Korea and China. Considering the intake frequencies of traditional Korean foods, Korean housewives born in China are more likely to eat boiled rice and a bun stuffed with seasoned meat and vegetables, as well as beef and vegetables cooked in a casserole than housewives with hometowns in South Korea and North Korean. In this article, similarities and differences in the preferences and intake frequencies of traditional Korean foods are discussed, and implications for nutritionists as well as food marketers are provided.

  • Two cases of human Echinostcma hortense infection were found in Seoul Paik Hospital. Their stools revealed echinostomatid eggs. After treatment with prasiquantel (single does of 10∼12mg/kg) and purgation with magnesium salt, total 21 flukes were collected in one case. The flukes were 5.9∼7.5mm long, had 27∼28 collar spines around their head, laterally deviated ovary and two tandem testes. They were identified as 5. hortense Asada, 1926. The cases are 38-year and 20-year old men residing in Seoul, whose hometown is Chungsonggun and Seungju-gun, Kyongsangbuk-do respectively. They had eaten raw mesh of various kinds of fresh water fishes (both cases) and/or salamander (latter case) , which are considered possible sources of this fluke infection. They experienced abdominal discomfort and/or diarrhea. Hematology revealed 22% eosinophilia in the latter case, but it became 5% after the treatment. Echinostomatid eggs were not found after the treatment in both cases. These are the 4th and 5th human cases of 5. hortense infection in Korea.

  • The paper attempts to balance the discourses of transnational spaces that have focused on de-territorialization, by emphasizing that transnational spaces are maintained also through re-territorialization. Reviewing the literature of transnational social fields, translocality, multicultural spaces and transnational places, I aim to show the way the main issues from the literature help understand an actually existing transnational space, Little Mania in Daehangno, Seoul. I specifically address the dialectic relation between de-territorialization and re-territorialization, multi-scalar networks, and hybridity of multicultural spaces in interpreting the weekend enclave of Filipinos in Seoul. I argues that Little Manila is a grounded translocality operating through multi-scaled networks of various actors. Furthermore, it is not a unified space where one dominant Filipino identity stands out. Different Filipinos and Filipinas constitute the space imagining different homes. It is also a multicultural space open to other minorities, which suggests the possibility of alternative spatial politics based on co-presence of different 'Others'.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand the experiences of adults after leaving the care of the institution. To accomplish this purpose, we have collected various data from participants who left child care institution more than five years ago and analysed these data through qualitative data analysis method. The results showed that three key themes namely, "isolation-helplessness", "being chained to their past", and "marching towards a better future". "Isolation-helplessness" is divided into "becoming a real orphan" and "fighting alone the unsupported". "Being chained to their past" are composed of "institution, a hometown that one needs to leave", "being marked as a institutionalized person" and "scars and marks". Lastly, "marching towards a better future" are grouped into "taking advantage of institutional experience", "helping each other", "drawing a fine picture of their future happiness" and "moving ahead sweeping aside all difficulties". Lastly, this study suggested political and practical measures to enhance wellbeing of adults that have left the institutional care.

  • Two human cases of Heterophyes heterophyes nocens infection were proved by identifying adult worms after treatment with bithionol or praziquantel in 1983 in Korea. They are 37 (Case 1) and 24-year old (Case 2) males whose resi¬dence or native village is a southern coastal area in Kohiing-gun, Chollanam-do. The Case 1 had the gastrointestinal symptoms such as epigastric pain and indigestion, and the Case 2 heart problems such as arrhythmia and ventricular premature beat in EKG and digestive symptoms such as diarrhea and abdominal pain. After the treatments, 35 and 67 specimens of H. hetero¬phyes nocens respectively were collected from the diarrheal stools through stereomicroscopy. The Case 1 was concommitantly infected with Clonorchis sinensis and the Case 2 with 3 other kinds of heterophyid flukes and with Diphyllo¬bothrium latum. The cases said to have eaten raw brackish water fish such as mullets (Mugil cephalus), perches (Lateolabrax japonicus) and gobies (Acanthogobius flavimanus) which are the intermediate hosts of H. heterophyes nocens in Korea.

  • This study aims to analyze how the media represents marriage immigrant women in the reality of Korean multicultural society. In particular, by analyzing an EBS documentary titled, 'Multicultural Fierce Conflicts between Mother-in-law and Daughter-in-law', this study clarifies that this content adopted travel narrative to show conflicts between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law and solution of these conflicts. The documentary apparently shows mutual understanding and cultural diversity but still keeps representing these conflicts as individual's 'trivial' problems. Under this way of representation, social and structural problem or institutional problem in reality can be covered up by the medium of travel. It makes such a conflict look like an individual's 'trivial' problem can be solved by individuals.

  • After the Korea-Japan comfort women's agreement, two films and were released with the audience's attention. Both films deal with the friendship of 'comfort women' girls. Unlike the existing 'comfort women' narratives, these two films are building a women's space based on a kind of sisterhood. The emergence of a new generation extends the story of personal friendship to the community level of sisterhood. In particular, suggests the possibility of a testimony that the 'comfort women' grandmother passes testimony to a new generation of women. In the cinematic present, it shows the possibility of feminist thinking of the 'comfort women' narrative. However, the representation of the colonial period does not deviate much from the existing patriarchal nationalistic viewpoint. It is typical that the 'comfort women' characters are still set with a pure and innocent girls of Chosun era.
