A high-brightness electron beam source for a microfocus X-ray tube has been fabricated using a carbon-nanotube (CNT) field emitter. The electron source consists of cathode that includes a CNT field emitter, a beam-extracting grid, and an anode that accelerates that electron beam. The microfocus X-ray tube requires an electron beam with the diameter of less than 5 $\mu$m and beam current of higher than 30 $\mu$A at the position of the X-ray target. To satisfy the requirements, the geometries of the field emitter tips and the electrodes of the gun was optimized by calculating the electron trajectories and beam spatial profile with EGUN code. The CNT tips were fabricated with successive steps: a tungsten wire with the diameter of 200 $\mu$m was chemically etched and was subsequently coated with CNTs by chemical vapor deposition. The experiments of electron emission at the fabricated CNT tips were performed. The design characteristics and basic experimental results of the electron source are reported.

As climate change gets severe, the ecosystem acts as an important carbon sink, therefore efforts are being made to utilize these functions to mitigate climate change. In this study, we inventoried and analyzed the previous studies related to carbon storage and flux by ecosystem type (forest, cropland, wetland, grassland, and settlement) and carbon pool (aboveground and belowground biomass, dead wood, Litter, soil organic carbon, and ecosystem) in Korean ecosystems. We also collected the results of previous studies and calculated the average value of carbon storage and flux for each ecosystem type and carbon pool. As a result, we found that most (66%) of Korea's carbon storage and fluxes studies were conducted in forests. Based on the results of forest studies, we estimated the storage by carbon stock. We found that much carbon is stored in vegetation (aboveground: 4,018.32 gC m-2 and belowground biomass: 4,095.63 gC m-2) and soil (4,159.43 gC m-2). In particular, a large amount of carbon is stored in the forest understory. For other ecosystem types, it was impossible to determine each carbon pool's storage and flux due to data limitations. However, in the case of soil organic carbon storage, the data for forests and grasslands were comparable, showing that both ecosystems store relatively similar amounts of carbon (4,159.43 gC m-2, 4,023.23 gC m-2, respectively). This study confirms the need to study carbon in rather diverse ecosystem types.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) exhibit excellent mechanical, electrical, and magnetic properties as well as nanometer scale diameter and high aspect ratio, which make them an ideal reinforcing agent for high strength polymer composites. The functionalized CNTs are believed to be very promising in the fields such as preparation of functional and composite materials. CNT-Polymer composites are expected to have good processability characteristics of the polymer and excellent functional properties of the CNTs. However, since CNTs usually form stabilized bundles due to Van der Waals interactions, are extremely difficult to disperse and align in a polymer matrix. The biggest issues in the preparation of CNT-reinforced composites reside in efficient dispersion of CNTs into a polymer matrix, and the alignment and control of the CNTs in the matrix. There are several methods for the dispersion of nanotubes in the polymer matrix such as solution mixing, bulk mixing, melt mixing, in-situ polymerization and chemical functionalization of the carbon nanotubes, etc. These methods and preparation of high performance CNT-polymer composites are described in this review.

Deposition behavior of hard amorphous carbon film was investigated by molecular dynamic simulation using Tersoff potential which was suggested for the interaction potential between carbon atoms. When high energy carbon atoms were collided on diamond (100) surface, dense amorphous carbon film could be obtained. Physical properties of the simulated carbon film were compared with those of the film deposited by filtered cathodic arc process. As in the experimental result, the most diamond-like film was obtained at an optimum kinetic energy of the incident carbon atoms. The optimum kinetic energy was 50 eV, which is comparable to the experimental observation. The simulated film was amorphous with short range order of diamond lattice. At the optimum kinetic energy condition, we found that significant amount of carbon atom were placed at a metastable site of distance 2.1 $\AA$. By melting and quenching simulation of diamond lattice, it was shown that this metastatic peak is Proportional to the quenching rate. These results show that the hard and dense diamond-like film could be obtained when the localized thermal spike due to the collision of high energy carbon atom can be effectively dissipated to the lattice.
