  • Structural integrity of solid rocket depends on the residual reactions between constituents of its composition(post cure, migration etc.), the oxygen(or anti-oxydent) in the free volume and humidity (desiccant) under the perfect sealed condition. Mechanical Properties of composite solid propellant arising from those factors are very complex. Moreover the propulsion are faced with thermal loads from diurnal & seasonal cycle till firing. In this study, the fast evaluation method of long term mechanical properties is suggested based on Thermo-Rheological Simplicity from curing oven to cool-down stage in view point of thermal stabilization. For this subject, endurance tester having temperature control capability are devised. From the results from incremental load and strain, non-linear characteristics are discussed.

  • Plastic gradient from geometrically necessary dislocation(GND) can strongly affect micro-scale plastic behavior of polycrystalline solids. In this research, mechanical behavior of polycrystalline solid is investigated using the finite element method incorporating plastic gradient from GND effect. Gradient hardness coefficient and material length parameter are used to evaluate the effect of the plastic gradient on the behavior of materials. Sensitivity of the modeling parameters on the plastic gradient from GND is presented and effects of plastic gradient and material parameters on the behavior of single crystal inside a polycrystalline aggregate are investigated. It is confirmed that the plastic gradient from GND amplifies hardening response of polycrystals and affects single crystal behavior embedded in polycrystalline solids.

  • The mixed finite element analysis is the most widely used method for saturated porous media. Generally, in this method, direct method and iterative method are proposed to obtain unknown variable, however, the iterative method is recommended because the method provide numerical stability and accuracy under the material properties for solid and fluid are different. In this paper, we introduce staggered method which has strong numerical stability, and FETI(Finite Element Tearing and Interconnecting) which is one of decomposition methods are applied into the method in order to obtain numerical efficiency. In which, Lagrange Multipliers and conjugated gradient method to solve decomposed domain are proposed, and then, the proposed method is verified numerical efficiency by point to point MPI(Message Passing Interface) library.

  • This paper presents a finite element formulation for the three-dimensional hierarchical solid element using Integrals of Legendre polynomials. The proposed hexahedral solid element is composed of four different modes including vertex, edge, face, and internal mode, respectively. The eigenvalue and patch test have been carried out to confirm the zero-energy mode and constant strain condition. In addition to these, a posteriori error estimation has been studied for the p-adaptive finite element analysis that is based on a smoothing technique to compute a post-processed solution from the finite element solution. The uniform p-refinement and non-uniform p-refinement are compared in terms of convergence rate as the number of degree of freedom is increased. The simple cantilever beam is tested to show the performance of the proposed solid element.

  • Ultrasonic testing are far superior to other nondestructive tests for detecting the disbond interface which occurred in adhesive interface. However, a solid rocket motor consisting of a steel case, rubber insulation, liner, and propellant poses many difficulties for analyzing ultrasonic waves because of the superposition of reflected waves and large differences in acoustic impedance of various materials. Therefore, ultrasonic tests for detecting the disbond interface in solid rocket motor have been applied in very limited areas between the steel case and rubber insulation using an automatic C-scan system. The existing ultrasonic test cannot detect the disbond interface between the liner and propellant of a solid rocket motor because most of the ultrasonic waves are absorbed in the rubber material which has low acoustic impedance. This problem could be overcome by analyzing the resonance frequency from the frequency spectrum using the ultrasonic resonance method. In this paper, a new technique to detect the disbond interface between the liner and propellant using ultrasonic resonance characteristics is discussed in detail.

  • This technical paper presents a new solid propellants family. The views are based on open literature and patents recently. Electrically controlled extinguishable solid propellants (ESCSP) are capable of multiple ignitions, extinguishments and throttle control by the application of electrical power. Both core and end burning no moving parts ECESP grains/motors to three inches in diameter have now been tested. Ongoing research has led to a newer family of even higher performance ECESP providing up to 10% higher Isp, manufacturing ease, and significantly higher electrical conduction.

  • Solid propulsion systems have simple structures compared to other propulsion systems and are suitable for long-term storage. However the systems generally have limits on control of thrust levels. In this paper we introduce controllers for combustion chamber pressure using on-off control techniques which have been known for relatively easy implementation and energy efficiency. For this, we use a simple pressure change model by considering only mass conservation within the combustion chamber and we design a classical controllers and on-off controllers with are Pulse Width Modulation(PWM) and Pulse Width Pulse Frequency Modulation (PWPFM). Then we compare the performance results of the controllers through numerical simulations.

  • In this paper, thermal sensitivity of the solid fuel grain in the hybrid rocket motor was investigated. When the heat from the non-reacting hot flow passing the grain ports is transferred to the solid fuel grain, the temperature fields in the solid fuel was numerically analyzed. These numerical analyzes were performed under the different nine port radii, and the critical distance between the ports in which the temperature in the solid fuel is sensibly responding was determined. Thus, the critical distance between the ports would be the important consideration for the design of the fuel grain because the high temperature in the fuel can bring the structural problems.

  • This paper is concerned with the design of optimal surface heating patterns that result in focusing acoustic energy inside a subsurface target volume at a specified target time. The surface of the solid is heated by an incident laser beam which gives rise to shear and compressional waves propagating into the solid. The optimal heating design process aims to achieve the desired energy focusing at the target with minimal laser power densities and minimal system disturbance away from the target. The optimality conditions are secured via the conjugated gradient method and by the finite element method along with using the half-space Green's function matrix. Good quality energy focusing is achived with the optimal designs reflecting the high directivity of the photothermally generated shear wave patterns.

  • Solid rocket propulsion systems are generally used for tactical missiles due to the structural and operational simplicity. Nevertheless, various kinds of design factors including outer diameter, length, weight, loading efficiency of propellant grain effects to thrust performance. Dual thrust is beneficial to range extension and terminal velocity increasement. But loading efficiency becomes low in case to obtain dual thrust performance by burning surface control. So, It is predicted to be reasonable to obtain dual thrust performance with high/low burning rate propellants. This study is on internal ballistic analysis and ground test to confirm dual thrust performance.
