Enzymatic hydrolysis using an immobilized enzyme was carried out to produce chitosan oligosaccharides (COSs) from chitosan effectively. Chitosanase was immobilized on eight different carriers by physical adsorption. The enzyme immobilized on chitin had higher activity than those immobilized on the other carriers in spite of its lower adsorption. The activity of chitin-immobilized enzyme was more than 90% of the original activity. Optimal temperature of the immobilized enzyme increased by about $15^{\circ}C$ and its thermostability was excellent in relatively wide range of temperature. But its effects of pH did not improve compared to the free enzyme. The immobilized enzyme produced 153 mg/g chitosan of the reducing sugar for 3hrs of hydrolytic incubation time. The total content of higher oligomers, tetramer to hexamer, among amount of total COSs obtained for 2hrs was more than 90%. In kinetic parameters for both enzymes, immobilized enzyme showed lower affinity for substrate and reaction rate than free enzyme, however, no reduction of the rate for high substrate concentrations. Consequently, chitin-immobilized could effectively hydrolyse chitosan and produce the higher COSs without activity decrease in comparison with the free enzyme.
We examined the effect of stereotype threat (STT) on spatial working memory and facial emotion recognition in Korean elderly. In addition, we investigated the role of expected moderator such as self-perception of aging. Seventeen seniors (male=7) received basic cognitive tests including K-WMS-IV, MMSE and answered self-report questionnaires including self-perception of aging, anxiety of aging, attitude toward aging and age identity on the first visit. On the second visit, they were exposed to negative stereotype by reading a script detailing cognitive decline related to aging while a control group was exposed to a neutral content. Following the exposure, they were tested on a spatial-working memory task (Corsi-block tapping task) and emotion recognition task (facial expression identification task). The results showed that the seniors exposed to STT showed significantly lower performance on emotion recognition task (p < .05) (i.e., especially on the more difficult facial stimuli). In addition, there was a significant interaction between STT and self-perception of aging (p< .05), indicating that those who have positive self-perception of aging did not show impairment in emotion recognition task and difficult spatial working memory task under STT. On the other hand, those with negative self-perception of aging showed impaired performance under STT. Taken together, the current study suggests that being exposed to STT could negatively influence cognitive and emotional functioning of elderly. Interestingly, having a positive self-perception of aging could protect the underperformance caused by STT.
A system to non-invasively fix and monitor eye by a head mounted display (HMD) with a CCD camera for stereotactic radiotherapy (SRS) of uveal melanoma has been developed and implemented clinically. The eye fixing and monitoring system consists of a HMD showing patient a screen for fixing eyeball, a CCD camera monitoring patient's eyeball, and an immobilization mask. At flrst, patient's head was immobilized with a mask. Then, patient was Instructed to wear HMD, to which CCD camera was attached, on the mask and see the given reference point on its screen. While patient stared at the given point in order to fix eyeball, the camera monitored Its motion. Four volunteers and one patient of uveal melanoma for SRS came into this study. For the volunteers, setup errors and the motion of eyeball were analyzed. For the patient, CT scans were peformed, with patient's wearing HMD and fixing the eye to the given point. To treat patient under the same condition, daily CT scans were also peformed before every treatment and the motion of lens was compared to the planning CT Setup errors for four volunteers were within 1mm and the motion of eyeball was fixed within the clinically acceptable ranges. For the patient with uveal melanoma, the motion of lens was fixed within 2mm from daily CT scans. An eye fixing and monitoring system allowed Immobilizing patient as well as monitoring eyeball and was successfully implemented in the treatment of uveal melanoma for SRS.

This study was performed to evaluate the long-term teachability of the stabilized hexavalent chromium contaminated soils treated with chromium reducing agent and soluble phosphate. The study shows that $Cr^{6+}$ in the leachate was little detected and the remaining $PO_4-P$ concentration kept below 0.1 mg/L due to the formation of geochemically stable hexavalent chromium phosphate minerals from the reactions of labile soil $Cr^{6+}$ forms with the added soluble phosphate salt and chromium reducing agent. The results provide evidence for the potential use of the immobilization technique for the hexavalent chromium contaminated soil remediation in the near future.

If arches are braced by lateral restraints, the ultimate strength of arches is determined by in-plane buckling and plastic bending collapse. This paper is conducted to investigate the in-plane nonlinear elastic and inelastic buckling behavior and the strength of fixed parabolic arches in uniform compresion, as well as to study arch behaviors against non-uniform in-plane compression and bending. As shown by the results, the limit slenderness ratio is suggested to classify the bucklingmode. Buckling strength of fixed parabolic arches under uniform compresion are evaluated using buckling curve for a straight column. Finally, an interaction e quation for arches under combined axial compresion and bending action is proposed.

This paper presents a scheme to enhance fixed priority scheduling algorithms on multiprocessors. This scheme gives the highest priority to jobs with zero laxity and schedules them Prior to other jobs. A fixed priority algorithm employing this scheme strictly dominates the original one; it can schedule all task sets schedulable by the fixed priority algorithm and some task sets not schedulable by the fixed priority algorithm. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme improves fixed priority algorithms in terms of the number of schedulable task sets and schedulable utilization bound.

Loads applied on the floor are transferred through beams to columns. The beams can be designed as both end fixed or simple beams. The load bearing capacity of a beam depends on each boundary condition. However, when the load bearing capacity of a beam is evaluated in fire tests, all kinds of beams are tested using simple beam conditions. In this study, an analytical method performed using heat transfer theory and heat stress analysis based on the mechanical and thermal properties of SS-400 steel at high temperature. This method was used to clarify the differences between the two types of boundary conditions at normal and high temperature. The results show that the load bearing capacity of a both-end fixed beam at high temperature is superior to that of a simple beam. Therefore, the application of simple beam conditions in fire tests for evaluation of load bearing capacity is conservatively safe compared to fixed boundary conditions.
In this paper, an approximate method is developed to obtain the natural frequencies of the out of plane vibration of circular curved beams. The governing differential equations are derived using the dynamic equilibrium equations with the Timoshenko theory, and solved numerically. The Runge-Kutta method and Regula-Falsi method are used to integrate the differential equations and to determine the natural frequencies, respectively. In numerical examples, the hinged-hinged and clamped-clamped end constraints are considered. For each case, the four lowest natural frequencies are reported as functions of four non-dimensional system parameters.
A new method for immobilization of glucose oxidate by the aerobic gamma radiation of synthetic monomers was developed. The radiocopolymerization was conducted aerobically at -70 to -8$0^{\circ}C$ with the mixture of several polyfunctional esters, acrylates and native enzyme. The retained activity of immobilized glucose oxidase was about 50 to 55% when a NK 23G ester, acrylamide-bis and water mixture (1:1:2) in cold toluene treated with 450 krad of gam-ma radiation. The radiation dose did not influence significantly to the enzyme activity. The solvents used to prepare the beads of glucose oxidase and monomers were toluene, n-hexane, petoleum ether and chloroform. 0.05M tris-gycerol (pH 7.0) was a more suitable bugger solution for immobilizing the enzyme than was 0.02M phosphate. Immobilization of glucose oxidase shifted the optimum pH for its reaction from 6.0 to 6.5. The pH profile for the immobilized enzyme showed a broad range of optimum activity while the native enzyme gave a sharp pick for its optimum pH value. The immobilized enzyme reaction temperature was at the range of 30~4$0^{\circ}C$.
