Natural periods are usually determined by the so-called linearized finite displacement theory even for a suspension bridge. This linearized method, with formulating structural stiffness by taking dead-load tension into consideration, calculates the natural periods of the bridge. As a result, the assumed initial tensions for each cable member may affect the accuracy of calculated natural periods and some other dynamic responses. This paper mainly demonstrates the effect of initially introduced tension accuracy on the evaluation of dynamic characteristics for a suspension bridge.

The fundamental vibration period of a shearwall apartments cannot estimate accurately by means of empirical formulas specified in present codes, The objective of this paper is to estimate the period of a shearwall apartments by microtremor measurement. A micretremor is the continuous small oscillation of the ground cause by traffic and operation machinery. Microtremors are extensively studied primarily in Japan to estimate conveniently subsurface structures of soil deposits and building vibrations. It is obtained the results that the fundamental periods estimated by microtremor measurement are shorter than those values by dynamic analysis of building.
Empirical seismic displacement equations based on the Newmark sliding block method are widely used to develop seismic landslide hazard map. Most proposed equations have been developed for embankments and landfills, and do not consider the dynamic response of sliding block. Therefore, they cannot be applied to Korean mountain slopes composed of thin, uniform soil-layer underlain by an inclined bedrock parallel to the slope. In this paper, a series of two-dimensional dynamic nonlinear finite difference analyses were performed to estimate the permanent seismic slope displacement. The seismic displacement of mountain slopes was calculated using the Newmark method and the equivalent acceleration time history. The calculated seismic displacements of the mountain slopes were compared to a widely used empirical displacement model. We show that the displacement prediction is significantly enhanced if the slope is modeled as a flexible sliding mass and the amplification characteristics are accounted for. Regression equation, which uses PGA, PGV, Arias intensity of the ground motion and the fundamental period of soil layer, is shown to provide a reliable estimate of the sliding displacement. Furthermore, the empirical equation is shown to reliably predict the hazard category.
Sea levels are rising as a result of climate change, and low-lying areas along the coast are at risk of flooding. Therefore, we tried to investigate the relationship between sea level change and climate indices using satellite altimeter data (Topex/Poseidon, Jason-1/2/3) and southern oscillation index (SOI) and the Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO) data. If time domain data were converted to frequency domain, the original data can be analyzed in terms of the periodic components. Fourier transform and Wavelet transform are representative periodic analysis methods. Fourier transform can provide only the periodic signals, whereas wavelet transform can obtain both the periodic signals and their corresponding time location. The cross-wavelet transformation and the wavelet coherence are ideal for analyzing the common periods, correlation and phase difference for two time domain datasets. Our cross-wavelet transform analysis shows that two climate indices (SOI, PDO) and sea level height was a significant in 1-year period. PDO and sea level height were anti-phase. Also, our wavelet coherence analysis reveals when sea level height and climate indices were correlated in short (less than one year) and long periods, which did not appear in the cross wavelet transform. The two wavelet analyses provide the frequency domains of two different time domain datasets but also characterize the periodic components and relative phase difference. Therefore, our research results demonstrates that the wavelet analyses are useful to analyze the periodic component of climatic data and monitor the various oceanic phenomena that are difficult to find in time series analysis.

In this paper, acceleration threshold of perception for the horizontal vibration of tall buildings was estimated. Excessive vibration of tall buildings by wind can give displeasure, such as giddiness and visual insecurity. To provide comfortable environment to residents of tall buildings, acceleration needs to be limited. For tall buildings the first mode of vibration is dominant. To reproduce the first mode of vibration, experiments were performed by generating sine waves by a shaking table. A nitration house was made and forty persons were employed for experiments. The forty persons were organized into five experimental groups, each of which was composed of eight persons, and the threshold of perception for horizontal vibration was measured by increasing acceleration in the range of 0.2Hz through 1.2Hz of frequency, Performance curves were obtained by dividing the distribution of perception for horizontal vibration into the range of $0{\sim}20%,\;21{\sim}40%,\;41{\sim}60%,\;61{\sim}80%\;and\;81{\sim}100%$ and by fitting curves.

As increase of height and slenderness of buildings, serviceability design criteria such as maximum lateral drift and wind-induced vibration level play an important role in structural design of high-rise buildings. Especially, wind-induced vibration is directly related to discomfort of occupants. However, no practical algorithm or design method is available for structural designers to control the acceleration level due to wind. This paper presented a control method for wind-induced vibration of high-rise buildings using the resizing algorithm. The level of vibration due to wind is calculated by well known estimation rules of ASCE 7-02, NBCC 95, SAA83, and Solari method. Based on the fact that the level of wind-induced vibration is inversely proportional to the magnitude of natural periods of buildings, in the design method, natural periods of a high-rise building are modified by redistribution of structural weight according to the resizing algorithm. The design method is applied to wind-induced vibration control design of real 42-story residential building and evaluated the efficiency and effectiveness.

This paper was calculated the earthquake load using ELFP(Equivalent Lateral Force Procedure) and RSA(Response Spectrum Analysis) for PSC Box Girder representative bridges by the Phase of KTX designed by ELFP and verified the difference of these analyses. It have been modeled 3 dimensional FE model of 5 bridges using a commercial FEM program for the comparison of these analyses using a commercial FEM program and were compared the earthquake load. It has been to confirm the increase of the difference ELFP of RSA calculated to seismic ground acceleration according to the ground condition and natural period. It is mean that the necessity of seismic reinforcement due to the application of a larger of earthquake load than designed earthquake load form the seismic performance evaluation result according to the difference of calculated earthquake loads.
In response spectrum analysis of pile-supported structure, an amplified seismic wave should be used as the input ground acceleration through the site-response analysis. However, each design standard uses different input ground acceleration criteria, which leads to confusion in determining the appropriate input ground acceleration. In this study, the ground accelerations were calculated through dynamic centrifuge model test, and the response spectrum analysis was performed using the calculated ground acceleration. Then, the moments derived from the test and analysis were compared, and a method for determining the appropriate input ground acceleration in response spectrum analysis was presented. Comparison of the experimental and simulated results reveals that modeling of the ground using elastic springs allows proper simulation of the natural period of the structure, and the use of a seismic wave that is amplified at the ground surface as the input ground acceleration provided the most accurate results for the response analysis of pile-supported structures in sands.

In this paper, the RCF(Resistive Companion Form) analysis method is applied to analyze small signal stability of power systems including thyristor controlled FACTS(Flexible AC Transmission System) equipments such as TCSC(Thyristor Controlled Series Capacitor). The eigenvalue sensitivity analysis algorithm in discrete systems based on the RCF analysis method is presented and applied to the power system including TCSC. As a result of simulation, the RCF analysis method is very useful to precisely calculate the variations of eigenvalues or newly generated unstable oscillation modes after periodic switching operations of TCSC. Also the eigenvalue sensitivity analysis method based on the RCF analysis method enabled to precisely calculate eigenvalue sensitivity coefficients of controller parameters about the dominant oscillation mode after periodic switching operations in discrete systems. These simulation results are different from those of the conventional continuous system analysis method such as the state space equation and showed that the RCF analysis method is very useful to analyze the discrete power systems including periodically operated switching equipments such as TCSC.
