  • Cavities behind concrete walls can adversely affect the stability of structures. Thus study aims to detect cavities behind concrete structures using a microphone in a laboratory model test. A small-scale concrete wall is constructed in a chamber, which is composed of a reinforced concrete plate and dry soil. A plastic bowl is then placed between the plate and soil to simulate a cavity behind the concrete structure. Leaky surface acoustic waves are generated by impacting the concrete plate using a hammer and are measured using a microphone. The measured signals are analyzed using natural frequencies, and cavity-free sections are evaluated. The test results show that the first natural frequency decreases at the cavity section due to the flexural vibration behavior of the plate. In addition, the amplitude corresponding to the first natural frequency decreases as the measurement location becomes farther from the cavity center and significantly decreases at the measurement locations near the rebars. This study demonstrates that a microphone may be useful to detect cavities behind concrete walls.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the durability characteristics of controlled low strength material(flowable fill) with high volume fly ash content. Flowable fill refer to self-compacted, cementitious material used primarily as a backfill in lieu of compacted fill. The two primary advantages of flowable fill over traditional methods are its ease of placement and the elimination of settlement. Therefore, in difficult compaction areas or areas where settlement is a concern, flowable fill should be considered. The fly ash used in this study met the requirements of KS L 5405 and ASTM C 618 for Class F material. The mix proportions used for flowable fill are selected to obtain low-strength materials in the 10 to 15kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$ range. The optimized flowable fill was consisted of 60kg f/$\textrm{m}^3$ cement content, 280kgf/$\textrm{m}^3$ fly ash content, 1400kgf/$\textrm{m}^3$ sand content, and 320kgf/$\textrm{m}^3$ water content. Subsequently, durability tests including permeability, warm water immersion, repeated wetting & drying, freezing & thawing for high volume fly ash-flowable fill are conducted. The results indicated that flowable fill has acceptable durability characteristics.

  • A series of forced vibration tests and ambient vibration measurement was conducted on a four-story reinforced concrete building damaged in the 1994 Northridge earthquake. Both low amplitude broadband and moderate amplitude harmonic excitation were applied using a linear shaker and two eccentric mass shakers, respectively, and ambient vibrations were measured before and after each forced vibration test. Accelerations, interstory displacements, and curvature distributions were monitored using accelerometers, LVDTs and concrete strain gauges. Natural frequencies and the associated mode shapes fur the first 7 modes were identified. Fundamental frequencies determined from the eccentric mass shaker tests were 70% to 75% of the values determined using ambient vibration data, and 92% to 93% of the values determined using the linear shaker test data. Larger frequency drops were observed in the NS direction of the building, apparently due to damage that was induced during the Northridge earthquake.

  • In these days, construction activities have caused civil petitions associated with vibration-induced damages or nuisances. Therefore, it is strongly needed to develop a remedial technique to mitigate unfavorable effects. The objective of this experimental research is to investigate material and structural dynamic characteristics of vibration-controlled concretes which have been proportionally mixed with various vibration reducing material, such as latex, rubber powder, plastic resin, polystyrofoams and etc. Normal and high strength concrete specimens are also prepared for corresponding comparison. As part of the recycling research for obsolete rubber and plastic materials, 32 concrete cylinders and 10 concrete flexural beams have been made for material and structural dynamic properties, respectively. In accordance with the resonance test on concrete cylinders, it can be concluded that concrete with vibration-reducing material have relatively larger material damping ration than normal or high strength concrete. Styrofoam is determined to be very effective vibration-reducing mixtures. From the vibration test on 10 concrete flexural beams, meamwhile, of importance observations was that material damping ratio is very smaller than structural damping ratio of corresponding specimen. But further vibration test on more flexural beams should be strongly needed by varying support conditions.

  • This study was performed to evalute mechanical and drying shrinkage properties of polypropylene fiber reinforced high flow concrete. The compressive strength and drying shrinkage ratio were increased with increasing the binder volume ratio and decreased with increasing the content of polypropylene fiber. The splitting tensile strength was increased with increasing the binder volume ratio and the content of polypropylene fiber. The flexural strength was increased with increasing the binder volume ratio and increased by the polypropylene fiber content 0.4%, but above the polypropylene fiber content 0.6% was decreased. This concrete can be used for high flow concrete.

  • This study was performed to evaluate flow properties of polypropylene fiber reinforced high flow concrete. Test results were showed that the slump, slump flow and L-type compacting were decreased with increasing the content of polypropylene fiber. But, the Box-type passing and air content were increased with increasing the content of polypropylene fiber. The slump was $25.5{\sim}27.5cm$, the slump flow was $60{\sim}65cm$, the Box-type passing was $2{\sim}6cm$, the L-type compacting was excellent and air content was $2.7{\sim}3.2cm%$ by the polypropylene fiber content 0.2%, respectively. This concrete can be used for high flow concrete.

  • This study is performed to evaluate flowability of high flowable concrete using ordinary portland cement, crushed coarse aggregate, crushed sand, sea sand, fly ash, lime powder and superplasticizer. The slump flow and air content are increased with increasing the content of lime powder. But, the O-type funneling time and Box-type passing are decreased with increasing the content of lime powder. The slump flow, air content, O-type funneling time, Box-type passing and L-type filling of target compressive strength 21-27 MPa and 35-42 MPa at curing age 28 days are 47-50 cm and 56-60 cm, 4.2-5.5% and 4.0-5.7%, 8-12s and 5-10s, 4.3-5.0 cm and 3.4-5.0 cm, and excellent, respectively. These concrete can be used for high flowable concrete.

  • For the concrete construction, finishing process is inevitable for crack control and improving permeability. The finishing process is closely related with setting time, but currently, the timing of the finishing process is not managed with scientifically but feeling of the workers. In this research, therefore, by comparing with the setting time measured with penetrating method, the feasibility of durometer for measuring setting time was analyzed. As a result, there was a high relationship between setting time measured with penetration method and durometer. Therefore, it is expected that using durometer can be a good solution for assessing setting time for finishing process.

  • Recently, high fluidity concrete is becoming more prevalent. High fluidity concrete uses admixture or thickener in order to prevent separation of materials due to increased fluidity, and, especially, BS is becoming more use for reduced heat of hydration and improved long-term strength. This study examined the effect of BS on fluidity of cement paste from a rheological viewpoint. As for BS types, materials equivalent to 1 types of KS F 2563 and the cement mass was substituted by 20, 40, 60, 80%.
