  • Suicide is one of the major social problems in Korea, and its suicide rate is highest among the OECD countries. It has been reported that employment instability in labour market is causal factor of suicide ideation. Because the unemployed and temporary or part-time workers are reported to have high level of suicide ideation due to unstable job security, and they are likely to be a high risk group for suicide, it is necessary to do in-depth research on the effect of job stability on suicide ideation and the protective factors. For this purpose this study investigates the relationship between employment status and suicide ideation, and examine the moderating effect of family function. Data of 1,235 adults from the national-wide 'Longitudinal Study of Suicide Survivors' Mental Health were analyzed. Employment status were associated with the level of suicide ideation(B=-.904, p<.001), and the level of suicide ideation was the highest in the unemployed group. And the moderating effect of family function was statistically significant(B=-.218, p<.05), and good family function buffers the effect of unstable job status on suicide as a protective factor. Based on these findings, policy and practical implications for suicide prevention for precarious employment from the family dimension are discussed.

  • This study aims to overcome the limitations of prior studies that have failed to take into account the impact of psycho-social factors on the employment of people with disabilities as well as the differences in employment by life stage. This study employs a research model that includes psycho-social factors along with human capital to examine how the determinants of employment differ for the disabled by life stage. The analysis in this study takes the form of logistic regression, using data from the fifth wave of the Korea Welfare Panel Survey. Analysis results show that the employment probability of young people with disabilities is significantly associated with their experience of discrimination, with their chance of employment decreasing when they have more experience of discrimination. Middle-aged people with disabilities are more likely to be employed when they have a lower level of education, a better health condition and a higher level of labor ability. For the disabled elderly, their labor ability is the only factor affecting their possibility of employment; they have a higher chance of getting a job when they have a higher level of labor ability.

  • This study carries out an empirical analysis of how workplace innovation affects employment growth. The theoretical model and hypotheses of this study are drawn from the previous research on the employment effects of innovation. I use the data on Workplace Innovation Indicators(2013-14) collected by Labor Foundation. As the regression models for this study, I adopt OLS models whose dependent variable is employment growth rate, and whose main independent variables are the adoption and the intensity(standardized values) of three innovative work practices such as TQM, employee suggestion plans and multi-skill training programs. The results of this study indicate that the adoption of workplace innovation does not have significant effects on employment growth, but that the intensity of workplace innovation has weakly positive effects on employment growth. Besides, the results of this demonstrate show that government-subsided organizational innovation consulting and training hours per capita have positive employment effects, but that wage level and prior employment size have negative ones. Finally the empirical results are outlined, and their limitations and the future direction of research on this topic are discussed.

  • This study aims to identify the contribution of factors to employment growth over the past 20 years (1996-2016) for seven metropolitan areas in Korea. For this purpose, we performed a multifactor partitioning (MFP) analysis based on the business survey data provided by Statistics Korea. The key findings of the analysis are as follows. First, over the long run, the region effect is dominant in metropolitan employment growth, followed by the industry mix effect. On the other hand, the dynamic MFP findings suggests that future regional employment disparities are likely to be explained by industry structure. Second, the gender mix and decent job mix effect do not significantly contribute to regional employment growth. However, the contributions of individual factors are not invalid, and it is possible to infer a pattern of declining employment for men-permanent workers and increasing employment for women-contingent workers. These results indicate the importance and necessity of employment policies that can promote structural transition in regional industries and qualitative growth accompanied by employment stability.

  • This article examines part-time work in the UK in terms of its characteristics and institutional contexts. Part-time jobs developed early due to the UK's liberal market institution and low level of public support for female employment. A large proportion of the employed women (about 40 percent) work part-time. Part-time work has been largely for married women. The expansion of part-time work in the UK was primarily market-driven and led by employers. Married women have worked part-time work primarily to accommodate their family responsibilities. There have been significant changes in labor market regulation in the UK since 1997. The Labor government legislated the Part-time Workers Regluations in 2000 to protect part-time workers. The government has also changed and newly implemented various laws and policies for work-life balance. There has been a real progress in improving the quality of part-time work overall. Nevertheless, we have not seen qualitatively different results in terms of female employment patterns and the qualify of part-time work so far. It has been largely constrained by the government's liberal orienation and voluntarism of labor relations in the UK.

  • This study addresses the issue of which factors make domestic works have turnover intention. To pursue this research issue, we utilized a public database "2017 Occupational Migration Path Survey", administerd by Korea Employment Information Service (KEIS). Decision tree method was applied to extract crucial factors influencing workers' turnover intention. They include 'the degree of matching the level of education with the level of work', 'the possibility of individual development', 'the job-related education and training', 'the promotion system', 'wage and income', 'social reputation for work' and 'the stability of employment'.

  • Data mining technique can be adapted to analysing Employment information in order to discover valuable information out of large data. As the issue employment such as jobless of college graduate, recruitment for women, recruitment for elders etc. became social problem, there are many efforts of various public employment services and studies. The factors that affects the college graduate's employment type (regular, temporary, daily) can be used to guide employment and to prepare employment for college students. In analyzing large number of attributes and the huge amount of data elements, regular statistical methods faces their limitation; therefore, data-mining technique is more suitable for the dataset of about 170 attributes and 20,000 elements. We divide the factors that may affect the employment type into personal factor, school factor, company factor, and experience factor; decision tree algorithm is used to find out the interesting relationship between the attributes of the factors and employment type. Personal factors such as the income of parents and marital status were the most affective factors to the employment type. The learned decision tree was able to classify the employment type with 87% of accuracy. We also assume the level of the school affects the employment type of the graduates.

  • Analysing the effects of expanded trade liberalization on the domestic labor market such as the flexibility of employment adjustment and the wage elasticity of employment etc. with industry base data, we get some important results as follows. The speed of employment adjustment in whole industries is turned out to be more rapid on the employee basis than on the whole worker basis. And the speed of employment adjustment is more rapid in the industries with high level of import ratio than those with high level of export ratio. In sum, viewing on the employee basis, the expanded trade liberalization makes the speed of employment adjustment slower slightly in individual industry level, and it is led mainly by the effects of export ratio rising. In case of the wage elasticity of employment, it becomes to be much higher as rates of openness or export ratios go higher, so the environment of jobless growth seems to be much more strengthened in this country.
