Innovation and Employment in Korean Service Sector - A firm Level Analysis (한국의 서비스업에서 기술혁신전략이 고용에 미치는 영향 - 기업수준의 연구)

  • We have analysed the impact of innovation on the employment in the Korean Service sector using KIS 2006 data. Our study is based on Bogliacino and Pianta (2010)'s model, which involves two main innovation strategies, technological competitiveness and cost competitiveness, as the main explanatory innovation variables for the employment dynamics. Empirical results show that an increase in demand was the strongest driver for an increase in employment in all four service sectors, including Science-based, specialized supplier, size and information intensive, and supplier dominated. Innovation strategy appeared to have a significant effect on employment at the firm level; Technological competitiveness showed a positive effect on employment in science based sector while cost competitiveness appeared to give a negative effect in specialized supplier sector. The firms in size and information intensive sector showed that increase in wages gives negative impact on their employment. However, cost competitiveness did not give any significant effect on employment dynamics of firms in size and information intensive sector and supplier dominated sector. This finding is different from the research of Bogliacino and Pianta (2010) on the European countries. One possible explanation would be that innovation strategy does not affect employment of firms in size and information intensive sector and supplier dominated sector since the level of innovativeness of these sectors in Korea fall behind that of European countries.

  • 정부는 지난 10월 12일 "성장 고용 복지"의 선순환을 통해 우리 경제가 2020년까지 선진국으로의 도약 및 선진국 수준의 고용률 70% 목표 달성을 위한 국가고용전략을 발표하고, 이에 따른 5대 과제를 선정했다. 정부가 마련한 일자리 희망 5대 과제는 (1) "지역 기업"이 주도하는 일자리 창출 (2) 공정하고 역동적인 노동시장 구축 (3) 일 가정 양립 상용형 일자리 확대 (4) 생애 이모작 촉진 (5) 일을 통한 빈곤탈출 지원 등이다. 이번 국가고용전략에는 건설업 맞춤형 대책이 포함돼 건설업계도 적지 않은 변화를 가져올 전망이다. 고용노동부는"건설업에서 고질적 문제로 지적돼 온 과도한 노무비 삭감, 유보임금, 숙련기능인력 부족, 불법 외국인 근로자 사용 등에 대한 근본적인 개선방안을 마련할 방침"이며 특히 정부 발주 공사의 경우 근로자 노무비를 사전에 공사원가에 반영하는 방안을 협의 중에 있다.

Study on the Identification of CSFs for Employment in IT Industry (IT 업계 고용 창출을 위한 성공요인에 관한 연구)

  • The purposes of this research are to empirically examine (1) the impact of application of IT in IT industry which is the main engine for creative economy, (2) the relationship between application of IT and corporate strategy, and (3) the influence of corporate strategy on application of IT and employment. To achieve the purpose of research, we conducted a survey on 187 CIOs in october 2013. Research findings confirm that application of IT provides competitive advantages such as efficiency, threat, functionality, attack, and integration and these traits of IT significantly contribute to employment. And research results show that the moderating effects of corporate strategy on the relationship between application of IT and employment are different depending upon the type of corporate strategy. Thus firms in IT industry should consider traits of IT more seriously when they establish corporate strategy.

A Study on Performance Measurement of Generational Diversity Company using Balanced Scorecard (BSC): The case of Japanese Companies (균형성과평가(BSC)모델을 활용한 청년·고령자 고용상생기업의 경영성과측정 -일본의 사례분석을 중심으로-)

  • This study aims at analyzing the management strategy and performance of companies that have been pursuing Generational Diversity. The management strategies were examined in terms of production, organizational structure and skill development. Performance was then evaluated using Balanced Scorecard (BSC). We selected four Japanese companies that practice Generational Diversity between the younger(age less then 34) and older generation(age older then 65). Our findings suggest the following. The common management strategies of the four companies include 1) creating generation-diverse teams 2) ensuring flexible work arrangements and 3) providing skill training programs. These strategies have yield positive outcomes such as sales increase, cost reduction (financial perspective) and expansion of the market share (customer perspective). Non-financial performance includes improvement of product and service quality (internal business perspective) and skill improvement of both the young and the old workers (learning and growth perspective). This study provides practical implications to domestic companies for their successful management of generational diversity in workplace.

An Empirical Study on Trade Openness and Industrial Relations: The Case of the Korean Manufacturing Industry (시장개방과 노사관계에 관한 실증분석 : 한국의 제조업을 대상으로)

  • This study examines how the difference in trade openness across manufacturing industries in Korea affects firm's employment strategies and industrial relations, utilizing the Korean establishment panel data. In terms of firm's employment strategy, it is found that trade openness is not associated with a particular employment strategy such as labor cost saving strategy or innovation strategy. This result is consistent with the previous findings that trade liberalization merely affects wages and employment. Moreover, this result disproves, at least for the Korean manufacturing, a general belief that when the domestic market is opened to foreign competition, firms will adopt and rely on labor cost saving strategy intensely. The obtained result concerning the relationship between trade openness and industrial relations is more interesting and informative. It is found that trade openness is positively associated with cooperative industrial relations. Furthermore, the positive relationship is reenforced when the establishment is unionized. This implies that management and union cooperate when they are faced with increased foreign competition as a result of trade liberalization.
