  • In this study, strain-controlled low cycle fatigue test for hot rolled STS304 steel was carried out at $400^{\circ}C$ and $600^{\circ}C$, respectively. High temperature fatigue test was done using an electric furnace attached on the hydraulic fatigue test machine. The results of this study show that STS304 hot rolled steel has excellent static strength and fatigue characteristics. The hysteresis loop at half life was obtained in order to calculate the elastic and plastic strain. Also, Relationship between strain amplitude and fatigue life was examined in order to predict the low cycle fatigue life of STS304 steel by Coffin-Manson equation.

  • Gas turbine blades that have complex geometry of the cooling holes and cooling passages are usually subjected to cyclic and sustained thermal loads due to changes in the operating characteristic in combined power plants; these results in non-uniform temperature and stress distributions according to time to gas turbine blades. Those operation conditions cause creep or thermo-mechanical fatigue damage and reduce the lifetime of gas turbine blades. Thus, an accurate analysis of the stresses caused by various loading conditions is required to ensure the integrity and to ensure an accurate life assessment of the components of a gas turbine. It is well known that computational analysis such as cross-linking process including CFD, heat transfer and stress analysis is used as an alternative to demonstration test. In this paper, temperatures and stresses of gas turbine blade were calculated with fluid-structural analysis integrating fluid-thermal-solid analysis methodologies by considering actual operation conditions. Based on analysis results, additionally, the total lifetime was obtained using creep and thermo-mechanical damage model.

  • The stiffness of chemcrete modified asphalt mixtures increase rapidly with time in the presence f oxygen and high temperature, Sometimes the asphalt pavements that have chemcrete modified asphalt mixture applied on the surface none show premature cracking because of the excessive increase in the stiffness f the asphalt mixtures. To mitigate this premature cracking, the chemcrete modified mixtures have been used as a base course material. In this study, the performance of the chemcrete modified asphalt binder and mixtures are investigated through a course of various laboratory tests including dynamic shear rheometer and bending beam rheometer tests for binders and uniaxial tensile fatigue, wheel tracking, and moisture damage tests for the mixtures. And also the resilient modulus of the conventional and chemcrete modified mixtures are compared based on the test results conducted on the specimens obtained from various in-situ test sections. It can be concluded from the tests results that the chemcrete modified mixtures show better rutting resistance than conventional mixtures. The chemcrete modified mixtures may have low temperature cracking when it is applied in the cold region. The stiffness of chemcrete modified mixtures is approximately 50 percent higher than that of conventional mixtures more than two years after the chemcrete modified mixture was applied in the base course.

  • Periodical thermal shock can introduce defects in thermal barrier coating made by layers of CoNiCrAlY bond coating(BC) and $ZrO_2-8wt%Y_2O_3$ ceramic top coating(TC) on Inconel-738 substrate using plasma spraying. Thermal shock test is performed by severe condition that is to heat until $1000^{\circ}C$ and cool until $20^{\circ}C$. As the number of cycle is increased, the fatigue by thermal shock is also increased. After test, the micro-structures and mechanical characteristics of thermal barrier coating were investigated by SEM, XRD. The TGO layer of $Al_2O_3$ is formed between BC and TC by periodical thermal shock test, and its change in thickness is inspected by eddy current test(ECT). By ECT test, it is shown that TGO and micro-crack can be detected and it is possible to predict the life of thermal barrier coating.

  • Stainless steel is a popular structural materials for liquid-hydrogen storage containers and piping components for transporting high-temperature fluids because of its superior material properties such as high strength and high corrosion resistance at elevated temperatures. In general, tungsten inert gas (TIG) arc welding is used for bonding stainless steel. However, it is often reported that the thermal fatigue cracks or initial defects in stainless steel after welding decreases the reliability of the material. The objective of this paper is to clarify the characteristics of ultrasonic guided wave propagation in relation to a change in the initial crack length in the welding zone of stainless steel. For this purpose, three specimens with different artificial defects of 5 mm, 10 mm, and 20 mm in stainless steel welds were prepared. By considering the thickness of s stainless steel pipe, special attention was given to both the L(0,1) mode and L(0,2) mode in this study. It was clearly found that the L(0,2) mode was more sensitive to defects than the L(0,1) mode. Based on the results of the L(0,1) and L(0,2) mode analyses, the magnitude ratio of the two modes was more effective than studying each mode when evaluating defects near the welded zone of stainless steel because of its linear relationship with the length of the artificial defect.

  • We investigated the effects of prolonged exposure in hot environmental condition and ingestion of fluid on various physiological variables including plasma glucose, lactate, the rating of perceived exertion (RPE), and heart rate as well as golf putting performance. Six male professional golfers were voluntarily participated in three different putting trials which were separated by seven days of time interval period. Three different putting trials were conducted at either 20℃ or 32℃, or 32℃ + Fluid ingestion. Performing 32℃ + Fluid ingestion trial, all subject ingested sport drink as much as their body mass was decreased. For each experiment, all subjects were undertaken total 48 putting, which separated by four x 12 putting in four different time points (i.e., Rest, 1 hr, 2 hr, and 3 hr). Plasma glucose concentration was significantly decreased with hot ambient condition but it was almost fully recovered by fluid ingestion. Plasma lactate concentration was significantly higher when subjects were exposed in hot environmental condition, and it did not change with fluid ingestion. There was a no different in putting performance and psychological fatigue level (performed by GRID test) at any environmental conditions. The RPE, commonly used for evaluating of physical fatigue level, was significantly dropped by fluid ingestion which indicates lower physical fatigue level. In addition to this, heart rate (HR) was also significantly decreased after fluid ingestion. Based on these results, it was concluded that the ingestion of fluid during prolonged exposure in hot ambient condition decrease the degree of physical fatigue levels and heart rate, which will possibly improve the golf performance when exposed in extreme weather condition in summer. • Metal-ferroelectric-insulator- semiconductor(MFTS) devices by using rapid thermal annealed (RTA) LiNbO$_3$/AIN/Si(100) structures were successfully fabricated and demonstrated nonvolatile memory operations. Metal-insulator-semiconductor(MIS) C-V properties with high dielectric AIN thin films showed no hysteresis and good interface properties. The dielectric constant of the AIN film calculated from the capacitance at the accumulation region in the capacitance-voltage(C-V) characteristics was about 8. The C-V characteristics of MFIS capacitor showed a hysteresis loop due to the ferroelectric nature of the LiNbO$_3$ thin films. Typical dielectric constant value of LiNbO$_3$ film of MFIS device was about 23. The memory window width was about 1.2 V at the gate voltage of $\pm$5 V ranges. Typical gate leakage current density of the MFIS structure was the order of 10$^{-9}$ A/$\textrm{cm}^2$ at the range of within $\pm$500 kV/cm. The ferroelectric capacitors showed no polarization degradation up to about 10$^{11}$ switching cycles when subjected to symmetric bipolar voltage pulse(peak-to-peak 8 V, 50 % duty cycle) in the 500 kHz.

  • Ti alloy is used for essential parts of aircraft for high temperature environment. Although Ti alloy has excellent performance in regard to mechanical properties, it is difficult ot find fatigue cracks by nondestructive ultrasonic inspection due to its two-phase microstructure, which consists of hard alpha and beta phases. Sound energy reflected from microstructural features in the component produces a background inspection noise which is seen even when no defects are present. This noise can inhibit the detection of critical internal defects such as pores cracks or inclusions. To obtain fundamental data on ultrasonic inspection of Ti alloy, ultrasonic testing was performed using a specimen with small drill holes and ultrasonic wave propagation velocites were measured.

  • Since some warm-mix asphalt (WMA) concretes were known to show poorer rut resistance than the hot-mix asphalt (HMA) concretes, many studies were performed in efforts of improving its performance at high temperature. The reason is assumed to be due to the moisture remaining in aggregates dried at lower temperature. Therefore, not only the rut resistance, the crack resistance of WMA concrete was also in question. In this study, fatigue life of WMA concrete was evaluated in comparison with HMA using 3-point bending (3PB) beam test. The asphalt mixtures were prepared based on Korean mix-design guide using a 13 mm dense-graded aggregate and 6 binders; two HMA binders and four WMA binders. By 3PB fatigue test, normal (unmodified) and polymer-modified WMA concretes were evaluated in comparison with normal and polymer-modified HMA concretes at a low temperature (-5℃). The results showed that most of WMA concretes showed longer fatigue lives than HMA concretes, even though the same PG binders were used for HMA and WMA. This result indicates that the WMA concretes have stronger resistance against fatigue cracking than HMA at the low temperature, and this result is in contrast to the high-temperature performance test.
