Various health benefits of turmeric have been reported. Therefore, an innovative application of turmeric as a functional food was explored. In the current study, effects of an extrusion process on the chemical properties and antioxidant activities of turmeric were investigated. Extrusion of turmeric was performed at $150^{\circ}C$ using screw revolution speeds of 500, 1,000, 1,300, and 1,600 rpm. A significant reduction in turmeric pigments and the formation of browning compounds occurred due to the extrusion. The degradation of pigments was proportional to the increase in screw speed. Infusion yields were significantly increased after the extrusion. The content of proteins and polyphenols, as well as the content of flavonoids in infusions and EtOH extracts were significantly reduced by the extrusion. Scavenging activities of turmeric against DPPH and ABTS radicals were also significantly reduced following the extrusion. These results indicate that the extrusion process caused a significant loss of pigments and decreased the antioxidant activities of turmeric. Therefore, further study related to the development of a proper extrusion process is to be needed.
Citrus juice was treated with supercritical carbon dioxide $(SC-CO_{2})$ and the effect of temperature and pressure on quality of citrus juice was determined. Pectinesterase (PE) was inactivated by $(SC-CO_{2})$ below temperatures necessary for thermal inactivation. There was no significant change in the pH, Brix and total acidity of citrus juice before and after $(SC-CO_{2})$ treatment, but brightness was improved. More ascorbic acid was retained during $(SC-CO_{2})$ treatment of citrus juice than thermal treatment $(93^{\circ}C/0.66\;min)$.During storage of supercritically treated citrus juice at $4^{\circ}C$, activity of PE was reversible. Sensory evaluation showed that color, flavor, taste and overall acceptance of $(SC-CO_{2})$ treated juice were not significantly different from untreated juice. This method offers potentially beneficial processing avenues for citrus juice and other juices, especially in the area of minimally processed products.

The alkali-Metal Thermal-to-electric Converter (AMTEC) is one of the promising static energy conversion technologies for the direct conversion of thermal energy to electrical energy. The advantages over a conventional energy converter are its high theoretical conversion efficiency of 40% and power density of 500 W/kg. The working principle of an AMTEC battery is the electrochemical reaction of the sodium through an ion conducting electrolyte. Sodium ion pass through the hot side of the beta"-alumina solid electrolyte (BASE) primarily as a result of the pressure difference. This pressure difference across the BASE has a significant effect on the overall performance of the AMTEC system. In order to build the high pressure difference across the BASE, hermeticity is required for each joined components for high temperature range of $900^{\circ}C$. The AMTEC battery was manufactured by utilizing robust joining technology of BASE/insulator/metal flange interfaces of the system for both structural and electrical stability. The electrical potential difference between the anode and cathode sides, where the electrons emitted from sodium ionization and recombined into sodium, was characterized as the open-circuit voltage. The efforts of technological improvement were concentrated on a high-power output and conversion efficiency. This paper discusses about the joining and performance of the AMTEC systems.
This study was aimed to find factors responsible for export potential of oyster mushroom through postharvest treatments including high pressure $CO_2$ and anti-moisture pad. Temperature fluctuation during export simulation induced the condensation of excess moisture resulting in the quality loss due to browning and decay. Anti-moisture pad was effective on inhibition of browning occurrence in part. High temperature exposure ($15^{\circ}C$) as retail simulation greatly offset the positive effect of anti-moisture pad. Short term treatment of high pressure $CO_2$ delayed the surface color changes as hunter L, a, and b values. There was no consistent tendency in total sugar and phenolics between treatments. In general, the export potential of small size mush-room (export size) at harvest was higher than large ones (domestic size). The major factors asso-ciated with the quality decrease of oyster mushroom during export were moisture condensation in packages and temperature fluctuation. Further research is required to improve mushroom export procedures.

This experiment was carried out to investigate the cultivation condition of soil salinity, manure and to find out the cultivation capability of Salicornia herbacea. The optimal growth condition of soil salinity was between 1% and 4%. The growth of groups for fertilization was significantly better than control group. Salicornia herbacea grew very up from 7 kg/l0a to 9 kg/l0a for N, 12 kg/l0a for P and the K-fertilizer group was better than control group but there was not significantly different among the conditions of K-concentration. The germination was good from $0{\textperthousand}\;to\;5{\textperthousand}$ for salinity, from $20^{\circ}C\;to\;30^{\circ}C$ for temperature. On the experiment cultivation, the production by hill seeding was $5.40{\sim}5.90 kg/m^2$ and was significantly higher than the yield by broadcast sowing which was $4.01{\sim}4.20 kg/m^2$. The production by hill seeding was 2.7 times than natural production and the production by broadcast sowing 1.9 times.
A compact imaging spectrometer (COMIS) was developed for a microsatellite STSAT-3. The satellite is now rescheduled to be launched into a low sun-synchronous Earth orbit (~700 km) by the end of 2012. Its main operational goal is the imaging of the Earth's surface and atmosphere with ground sampling distance of 27 m and 2 - 15 nm spectral resolution over visible and near infrared spectrum (0.4 - 1.05 ${\mu}m$). A flight model of COMIS was developed following an engineering model that had successfully demonstrated hyperspectral imaging capability and structural rigidity. In this paper we report the environmental test results of the flight model. The mechanical stiffness of the model was confirmed by a small shift of the natural frequency i.e., < 1% over 10 gRMS random vibration test. Electrical functions of the model were also tested without showing any anomalies during and after vacuum thermal cycling test with < $10^{-5}$ torr and $-30^{\circ}C\;-\;35^{\circ}C$. The imaging capability of the model, represented by a modulation transfer function (MTF) value at the Nyquist frequency, was also kept unvaried after all those environmental tests.
The steam line break accident for Kori Unit 1 is analyzed by a code SYSRAN which calculates nuclear power and heat flux using the point kinetics equation and the lumped-parameter model and calculates system transient using the mass and energy balance equation with the assumption of uniform reactor coolant system pressure. The 1.4 f $t^2$ steam line break accident is analyzed at EOL (End of Life), hot shutdown condition in which case the accident would be most severe. The steam discharge rate is assumed to follow the Moody critical flow model. The results reveal the peak heat flux of 38% of nominal full power value at 60 second after the accident initiates, which is higher than the FSAR result of 26%. Trends for the transient are in good agreement with FSAR results. A sensitivity study shows that this accident is most sensitive to the moderator density coefficient and the lower plenum mixing factor. The DNBR calculation under the assumption of $F_{{\Delta}H}$=3.66, which is used in the FSAR with all the control and the shutdown assemblies inserted except one B bank assembly and of Fz=1.55 shows that minimum DNBR reaches 1.62 at 60 second, indicating that the fuel failure is not anticipated to occur. The point kinetics equation, the lumped-parameter model and the system transient model which uses the mass and energy balance equation are verified to be effective to follow the system transient phenomena of the nuclear power plants.lear power plants.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of stabilization for army firing range soil highly contaminated with Pb (total Pb: 29,000 mg/kg) using calcined waste oyster shells. The calcination was conducted to activate quicklime from calcite. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of calcination, both natural oyster shells (NOS) and calcined oyster shells (COS) were applied to the Pb contaminated soil. Stabilization was conducted by mixing the contaminated soil with oyster shell media at 5-20 wt% and cured for 28 days. Following 28 days of curing, Pb leachability was measured based on the Korean Standard Test method (0.1 N HCl extraction). The treatment results showed that the COS treatment outperformed the NOS treatment. All of the NOS treatments failed to meet the Korean warning standard of 100 mg/kg. However, the Pb concentrations were significantly reduced to 47 mg/kg and 3 mg/kg upon 15 wt% and 20 wt% COS treatments, respectively which passed the Korean warning standard. Moreover, -#20 mesh materials were more effective than the -#10 mesh materials in effectively reducing Pb leachability. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM)-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) results indicated that Pb immobilization was strongly linked to Al and Si.
This study was conducted to compare the growth status of aerial parts, photosynthesis and microclimate between fixing light transmittance (Control) and changing light transmittance (C.L.T.) during ginseng growing seasons. Control showed 8% light transmittance rate during growing seasons. But C.L.T. showed 18% light transmittance rate during early (April-June) and late growth stage (September-October) and 6% light transmittance rate middle growth stage(July-August). Air temperature, leaking water rate and soil water content of C.L.T. was higher than those of control during early and late growth stage. But Air temperature, leaking water rate and soil water content of C.L.T was lower than those of control during middle growth stage C.L.T. exhibited superiority in survival ratio, stem diameter, stem length, L.A.I. and stem angle compared to control. Chlorophyll content of C.L.T. was lower than that of control but S.L.W., stomatal opening and photosynthetic rates of C.L.T. was higher than those of control. Also Alternaria blight disease and defoliation of C.L.T. was lower than those of control.

The application of livestock manure to cropland is a practice that has been used for centuries. Agricultural crops can utilize nutrients from manure, and the producer can utilize land for disposal, although in a "sustainable system" the concept is manure utilization and not waste disposal. However, meeting regulatory criteria regarding microbial quality remains an expensive and time consuming process. The purpose of this study was to quantify the level of environmental impact of soil moisture and temperature on fecal coliform (Escherichia coli or E. coli) survival in upland soils for sound application of livestock manure. Samples were collected up to 30 days depending on the given conditions. The inactivation rate of E. coli increased linearly with increased temperature while the inactivation rate gradually decreased with decreased soil moisture level. The overall findings of this study showed that the temperature was the limited factor on E. coli survival in soils over soil moisture content. This study will provide useful and practical guidelines to applicators of soil in deciding appropriate handling and time frames for land application for sustainable agriculture.
