  • Rubber deposited during aircraft landing is known as the main cause of reducing surface friction force on wet surfaces. Thus, rubber deposits are removed at regular intervals for sae airplane landing. The high-pressure waterblast method, widely used for the removal of rubber deposits, is regarded as the main cause for the loss of surface material because in this method, water hits the surface directly at a high pressure. In this study, a rubber removal primer is developed to reduce surface damage by lowering the pressure of waterblast relatively during the removal of rubber deposits such that the deposits are removed efficiently even with a lower water pressure. To achieve this, basic materials appropriate for the primer were selected and their performance, penetration rate, and site applicability were evaluated. Based on the evaluations, the proportion of additive required for improving the performance of the basic materials was first determined. Then, the optimum mix ratio was derived through the evaluation of the effect on pavements, and the development of the rubber removal primer was completed.

  • Surface cleaning is both essential and troublesome when a consumer seeks to eliminate soil attached to the surface of fresh ginseng because all ginseng purchased in the market is covered with soil, reflecting the post-harvest situation. To facilitate ginseng use at home, a fresh-cut type of ginseng is required. As a first step toward production of such ginseng, several washing and dipping treatments were investigated with respect to surface cleaning and reduction of microbial populations on fresh ginseng. In terms of microbial distribution on the surface of fresh ginseng, higher levels of viable bacteria (6.63 log CFU/each) and fungi (5.12 log CFU/each) were present on the rhizome head than on other regions of the root. Of the washing treatments tested, hand-brushing was effective for surface cleaning and to reduce microorganism levels on fresh ginseng, but use of a high-pressure water spray followed by hand-brushing was optimally effective. To further reduce the levelsof microorganisms on the surface of fresh ginseng after washing, additional dipping treatments in 70% (v/v) ethanol and electrolyzed acidic water (at pH 2.3) were somewhat effective but showed no significant differences compared with other dipping treatments tested, including a 3 ppm ozone solution, a 200 ppm sodium hypochlorite solution, or hot water at $50^{\circ}C$.

  • Heat and mass transfer rates to spray water droplets for spray transients in a high pressure vessel have been predicted by two different droplet models: the complete mixing model and the non-mixing model. In this process, the ambient fluid surrounding the droplets is a real-gas mixture composed of saturated steam and noncondensable hydrogen gas at high pressure. The physical properties of the mixture are estimated by applying the concept of compressibility factor and using appropriate correlations. A computer program, DROPHMT, to calculate the heat and mass transfer rates for two different droplet models has been developed. As an illustrative application of the computer program to engineering practices, heat and mass transfer rates to spray water droplets for spray transients in a Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) pressurizer have been calculated, and the typical results have been provided.

  • This study is to comparatively analyze the characteristics of pH decrease in recycled fine aggregates for embankment and landfill produced from waste concrete by using natural process and artificial process. The result was as follows In case of recycled fine aggregates left outdoor, it was found that pH level was decreased if the thickness of embankment becomes thinner, or the materials left outdoors owing to high concentration of $CO_2$ in atmosphere caused by respirations of people. When the air was permeated, pH level was decreased more effectively. It was analyzed that this phenomenon was caused by efficient supply of $CO_2$ in the recycled fine aggregates owing to high-pressure ventilators. In case of water spraying treatment, sprayed water facilitated hydration of unhydrated cement to dissolve calcium hydroxides which neutralized $CO_2$ in the atmosphere during desiccation process and decrease pH level by a considerable margin. In case of Immersed treatment, decrease of pH was not sufficient. When facilitating the supply of $CO_2$, pH level of the recycled fine aggregates was decreased by the largest margin. It was analyzed that this phenomenon was caused by efficient supply of $CO_2$. From the above results, it was analyzed that the most effective method of reducing pH level of the recycled fine aggregates from the aspects of pH reduction performance, economic efficiency and workability was repeated wet-dry cycles of spraying water to the aggregates in the proportion of 1:0.5 by weight and then treating by forcefully blowing $CO_2$ gas into the aggregates.

  • This paper evaluates the fire safety level of eight pump rooms in the nuclear power plant using a fire model, CFAST We estimate the Conditional Core Damage Probability (CCDP) of each room based on the analyzed results of CFAST Eight rooms located on the primary auxiliary building of the nuclear power plant are high pressure safety injection pump room A/B, low pressure safety injection pump room Am. containment sprdy pump room A/B, and motor-driven auxiliary feed water pump room A/B. The upper layer gas temperature of each room is estimated and the integrity of cable is reviewed. Based on the results, the integrity of the cable located at the upper part of compartment is maintained without thermal damage. The Conditional Core Damage Probability Is reduced to half of the old values. Accordingly, the fire safety assessment for eight pump rooms using the fire model will be capable of reducing the uncertainty and to develop a more realistic model.

  • In this research, we suggest a real-time tele-driving system for unmanned fire truck control using the LTE communication system. The operator located in the safe area could drive the unmaned fire truck by implementing the secure tele-operation in case of the emergencies and disaster situation. A prototype of the unmaned fire truck was developed with a fire canon, a high pressure pump, a ball valve and a horse reel. The effect of time delay and FPS was quantified depending on the image sizes and the effective system for realtime tele-operation was suggested. To verify the suggested system, the test was performed between an operator and an unmanned fire truck which is approximately 30km apart. In this research, the immersion tele-driving system is suggested for real-time fire suppression with a 120ms time delay using LTE communication.
