  • The combustion characteristics of Boron-beads to improve the energy density of gas generator has been investigated in accordance with diameter of beads and their composition. In this paper, electrically heated tungsten sheet and visualized furnace are applied to measure ignition temperature and burning time of bead respectively. The results proposes ignition temperature between 720~800 K and burning time proportional to bead diameter. Also a ignition delay of boron particle is detected through the temperature and radiation intensity measurements.

  • As technologies evolve, diverse 3D measurement techniques using cameras and pattern projectors have been developed continuously. In 3D measurement, high accuracy, fast speed, and easy implementation are very important factors. Recently, 3D measurement using multi-frequency fringe patterns for absolute phase computation has been widely used in the fringe projection profilometry. This paper proposes an improved method to compute the object's absolute phase using the reference plane's absolute phase and phase difference between the object and the reference plane. This method finds the object's absolute phase by adding the difference between the reference plane's wrapped phase and the object's wrapped phase to the reference plane's absolute phase already obtained in the calibration stage. Through this method, there is no need to obtain multi-frequency fringe patterns about new object for the absolute phase computation. Instead, we only need the object's phase difference relative to the reference planes's phase in the measurement stage.

  • The stereo radiation detection system detects gamma ray source and measures the two dimensional distribution image based on the detection result. Then the system is implemented to measure the distance to the radiation source from the system in 3D space using stereo vision algorithm. In this paper, we reduced the time for a gamma-ray scan space detection through image processing algorithms. In addition, it combines radiation and visible light images. Then we conducted a study for improving the distribution of gamma-ray detection efficiency through the stereo calibration using a 3D visualization. As a result, we obtain an improved detection time by more than 30% and have acquired a visible image with a 3D monitor.

  • In this study, a machine vision system using a color recognition method has been designed and developed to automatically sort out specified materials from a mixture, especially Cu and other non-ferrous metal scraps from a mixture of iron scraps. The system consists of a CCD camera, light sources, a frame grabber, conveying devices and an air-nozzle ejector, and is program-controlled by a image processing algorithms. The ejectors designed to be operated by an I/O interface communication with a hardware controller. In the functional tests of the system, its efficiency in the separation of Cu scraps from its mixture with Fe ones reaches to 90% or more at a conveying speed of 15m/min, and thus the system is proven to be excellent in terms of the separating efficiency. Therefore, it is expected that the system can be commercialized in the industry of shredder makers if an automated sorting system of high speed is realized.

  • The characteristics of flame dynamics occurring near the bluff body was experimentally investigated in a model combustor with V-gutter bluff body. Measurements of chemiluminescence with high speed camera and PIV were performed for visualization of flame structure. Flashback occurs due to the change of pressure gradient in the combustor, and the flashback distance depends on equivalent ratio. Unstable flames can be classified into three types depending on the flashback distance and structure. When the flame goes over the bluff body, an unusual flame structure occurs at the front of the bluff body. Re-stabilization takes place as the flame moves downstream of the combustor. This process is supported by a strong vortex structure behind the bluff body.

  • Leading edge extension(LEX) in a highly swept shape applied to a delta wing features the modem air-fighters. The LEX vortices generated upon the upper surface of the wing at high angle of attack enhance the lift force of the delta wing by way of increased negative suction pressure over the surfaces. The present 3-D stereo PIV includes the Identification of 2-D cross-correlation equation, stereo matching of 2-D velocity vectors of two cameras, accurate calculation of 3-D velocity vectors by homogeneous coordinate system, removal of error vectors by a statistical method followed by a continuity equation criterion and so on. A delta wing model with or without LEX was immersed in a circulating water channel. Two high-resolution, high-speed digital cameras($1280pixel{\times}1024pixel$) were used to allow the time-resolved animation work. The present dynamic stereo PIV represents the complicated vortex behavior, especially, in terms of time-dependent characteristics of the vortices at given measuring sections. Quantities such as three velocity vector components, vorticity and other flow information can be easily visualized via the 3D time-resolved post-processing to make the easy understanding of the LEX effect or vortex emerging and collapse which are important phenomena occurring in the field of delta wing aerodynamics.

  • The analysis of the dynamic behavior of the packaging of a drum washing machine has been carried out under the drop impact conditions. LS-DYNA software is used for performing the finite element analysis, and the validations are performed by comparing with the impact acceleration, effective stress and deformation of cushioned package with high-speed camera during free drop test. By analyzing the cushion characteristics and the design parameters of the original packaging, a packaging with an improved design is developed, and this design is validated on the basis of the results of the distribution test which consists of drop test, vibration test, stacking test, squeez test and so on. The drop impact simulation and analysis methods developed in this study can be adopted to successfully improve the cushioning provided by the packaging and to reduce the cost involved in developing new packaging for drum washing machines.

  • This paper presents a 3D face modeling method using a CCD camera and a projector (LCD projector or Slide projector). The camera faces the human face and the projector casts white stripe patterns on the human face. The 3D shape of the face is extracted from spatial and temporal locations of the white stripe patterns on a series of image frames. The proposed method employs region segmentation and multi-beam techniques for efficient 3D modeling of hair region and faster 3D scanning respectively. In the proposed method, each image is segmented into face, hair, and shadow regions, which are independently processed to obtain the optimum results for each region. The multi-beam method, which uses a number of equally spaced stripe patterns, reduces the total number of image frames and consequently the overall data acquisition time. Light beam calibration is adopted for efficient light plane measurement, which is not influenced by the direction (vertical or horizontal) of the stripe patterns. Experimental results show that the proposed method provides a favorable 3D face modeling results, including the hair region.

  • High speed under water vehicle by using solid rocket motor, which is a natural cavitation type, was tested. The vehicle's speed and running distance was measured, and pressure sensors installed on the surface of the vehicle show pressure-time history of pressures according to the development of the supercavitation. Underwater cameras installed on the wall of the test pool recorded whole processes from the onset of the supercavitation to fully developed one. CNU-SuperCT based on 2-dimensional inviscid theoretical analysis was used to simulate the test result. In consideration of CNU-SuperCT does not include the control fins of the vehicle, simulation results agree with test results very well. Also, pictures from underwater cameras support the test results.

  • Video compression is essential technique for fast and efficient transmission of a large amount of video data maintaining high quality. Also, motion estimation and motion compensation is most important technique for efficient video compression. A proposed method is improved diamond search method which uses split diamond pattern and rotated diamond pattern. In particular, the proposed method shows superb result when it is used for the sequence with a direction of camera moving. Moreover when it is used for the sequence with little motion, complexity is reduced considerably by using fewer search points. Also, by varying the number of initial search points, the propose method can provide several options in terms of duality or speed. Simulation results shows that the proposed method sustains better visual quality compared with diamond search method and HEXBS even by using fewer search points. Besides, compared with existing methods, it is able to conduct a motion estimation more efficiently by changing the number of search points adaptively according to motion of video data.
