Comparative Study and Coloring Test for the Technique of Korean and Chinese Gold-painted porcelain (한(韓)·중(中) 화금자기(畵金磁器) 금채기법(金彩技法)에 대한 비교(比較) 조사(調査) 및 가채(加彩) 실험(實驗))

  • The Department of Fine Art requested the conservation science team to examine the technique of painting with gold powder on the gold painted porcelains, which were made in Korea and China, among the items possessed by National Museum of Korea in order to publish it in the research paper collection of the Exchange Exhibition of Korea and China Porcelains. Among the items possessed by National Museum of Korea, such items were included as, an item of Koryo inlaid celadon (No. Gaesung 106), called the celadon with inlaid work (Korean name: Cheongjasanggam suhawonmun geumchaepyunho), which was decorated in the layer of glaze using gold power, an items of tea cup called "Temmku da wan" (No. Bongwan 10011), which was manufactured in the time of Song dynasty of Chinese history, an items of gold cup called "Siyuchohwamun hwageumwan" (No. Bongwan 2027), and an items of a porcelain called "Siyuwan" (No. Duksoo 3322). As the result of the examination, the stabilizing method of baking the decorated porcelains is similar, after they are painted with the pigment mixed with fine gold powder and the glaze solvent, but the treatment method of the colors is a little different among them. In other words, there is a big difference between them, for example, in the case of Koryo celadon, because the gold coloring was painted carefully one by one on the splendid decorations of inlaid works, while in the case of Chinese porcelains, butterflies or arabesque designs are decorated on the layer of the glaze in the porcelains of no decoration, using the stencil skill. According to the result of this examination, the part of the porcelain, whose layer of gold color was peeled off, could be restored, and as the result of the restoration, it was confirmed how beautiful and splendid the gold porcelain had been at the time of being manufactured.

  • 본 논문에서는 다채널 오디오 시스템에서 사용되어지는 음향신호처리에 대하여 저자들이 그간 제안하였던 방법들을 중심으로 다뤘다. 다룬 내용은 첫째로 각 스피커에서 청자의 위치까지의 공간응답의 영향을 배재할 수 있는 역 필터링이고, 둘째로 다채널 스피커의 위치를 파악하여 최적 위치와의 차이를 자동적으로 보상할 수 있는 방법이다. 셋째로 인간의 인지적인 측면을 고려하는 다채널 스피커로부터의 에너지 레벨 정렬 방식에 대하여 다뤘고, 마지막으로 특정공간의 반사음의 분포 패턴을 구하여 이를 일반적인 청취공간에서 재현해 내는 음장 재현 방식에 대하여 요약하였다.(중략)

초정밀가공기술의 현황과 전망

  • Micro-electronics를 핵으로 하는 기술혁신의 물결이 눈부시고, 우리 주변의 일상생활이 하루가 다르게 변해 가고 있다. Leading-edge technology, high technology, advanced technology 등으로 호칭되는 일군의 새로운 기술의 절대적 level이 현재 어디에 위치해 있는지 확인 조차 하기 어렵고 첨단기술 제품의 성능에 넋을 잃을 지경이 지만 고려청자나 이조백자에 대해서는 현재의 기술을 가지고도 그 재현이 곤란하다. 이와 같이 시차의 이중성 속에서 제품의 부가가치를 높이고 생산성을 올리기 위해서는 가공기술의 고도화를 가하지 않으면 안된다. 어떤 소재를 설계된 모양대로 변화시키는 일련의 과정을 가공이라 한다면 이에는 변형가공(주조, 소성가공), 부가가공(용접), 제거가공(절삭, 연삭)등을 생각할 수 있으며 이들 사이의 가공정도의 개략치는 다음과 같다. (그림.1 가공공정에 따른 가공정도) 공작물에 요구되는 가공정도는 시대의 변천과 더불어 level up되고 이를 위한 기술 개발이 부단히 이어오고 있다. 1960-70 년대의 생산가공 기술은 .mu. m 단위인 $10^{-5}$--$10^{-6}$m의 범위의 가공정도를 생산 line으로 실현하는 것이 중점 개발 목표였다. 그러나, 현재는 $10^{-5}$--$10^{-7}$m를 목표로 한 submicron 가공정도 실용기에 들어서고 있다.

Analysis of the Koryo Celadon Shape (The Symmetry Study on the Maebyong) (고려청자(高麗靑磁)의 형태분석(形態分析) (매병(梅甁)의 균제성(均齊性) 연구(硏究)))

  • The typical characteristic shape of the Koryo inlaid celadon Maebyong was reviewed and the symmetry of S curve was analyzed by the method of geometric basis. The contours of Maebyongs sampled were drawn and divided with geometric rectangular proportion. The analytical results showed the static and dynamic symmetric of the vase and the ratios of height and base of the rectangles established for the analysis of their shapes were almost 1:1, 1:${\sqrt{2}}$ and 3:5(known as the Golden Ratio). The excellent beauty of the curve was principally caused by the balanced and harmonius division of the proportional rectangles. The contour line was developed along with the logarithmic spiral modified and introduced lately into the shape of Yi dynasty's liquor bottle.

A Study of the Chemical Composition of Korean Traditional Ceramics (I): Celadon and Kory$\v{o}$ Whiteware (한국 전통 도자기의 화학 조성에 대한 연구 (I): 고려청자와 고려백자)

  • The composition of Chinese ceramic shards has been the subject of analysis in Europe, beginning in the 18th century, and in China from the 1950s. Scientific studies of traditional Korean shards commenced in the United States and Germany in the 1980s, and studies within Korea began in the 1990s. From analysis of a large systematically collected dataset, the composition of porcelain produced during the Kory. dynasty, including 21 celadon and 10 whiteware groups, was characterized and compared with that of Chinese ceramics. The average composition of the body and glaze of several shards (usually three to five) from each group was determined, enabling comparisons between groups. The results show that the majority of groups were derived from mica-quartz porcelain stone, which was commonly used in Yuezhou, Jingdezhen, and other southern Chinese kilns. The composition of glazes includes clay and flux components; the latter were typically wood ash and limestone, initially as burnt but later as crushed forms. The earliest of the Kangjin glazes contained substantially less titanium oxide than did the Yuezhou glazes, which were typically formulated from body material and wood ash. The present study provides a comparative framework for the growing number of analytical investigations associated with excavations occurring in Korea.

Research on Re-creational Experiment and Technique of Gold Powder Painting for Goryeo Gold-painted Porcelain (고려시대 금채자기의 채색기법 재현실험 연구)

  • This study is re-creational experiment of Goryeo gold-painted decoration based on the research of the gold remaining and gold painting technique on the two pieces of Goryeo gold-painted celadon and the three pieces of Chinese gold-painted porcelain on North Song period which ones have been owned by National Museum of Korea since 2007. For the observation of glue state and color developing ability, four kinds of agglutinative agent and gold powder were mixed over the porcelain sherds, then gradually fired from $100^{\circ}C$ to $1200^{\circ}C$. Visual effect and ideal temperature were measured. Among of them, oil and glue showed the best results in glue state and color developing ability. Through those results, the entire Goryeo engraved celadon were reproduced in modern facilities. Oil and glue were gold-painted over the glaze then it was fired at the ideal temperature 700 to $800^{\circ}C$. For observation the binding condition, the gold-painting cross section was looked by the scanning electron microscope (SEM). As the result, oil and glue did not make much difference in Agglutinative agent, but gold was good, the color developing ability, however, in the case of oil, the edge of gold is curled because of its interfacial tension, and it is not dried well at room temperature so the working property is not as good as the glue. Glue more effective in terms of work efficiency, but color developing ability to fall slightly in this experiment were able to see through.

Dismantling and Restoration of the Celadon Stool Treasure with an Openwork Ring Design (보물 청자 투각고리문 의자의 해체 및 복원)

  • The celadon stools with an openwork ring design which consist of four items as one collection were excavated from Gaeseong, Gyeonggi-do Province. The celadon stools were designated and managed as treasures due to their high arthistorical value in the form of demonstrating the excellence of celadon manufacturing techniques and the fanciful lifestyles during the Goryeo Dynasty. However, one of the items, which appeared to have been repaired and restored in the past, suffered a decline in aesthetic value due to the aging of the treatment materials and the lack of skill on the part of the conservator, raising the need for re-treatment as a result of structural instability. An examination of the conservation condition prior to conservation treatment found structural vulnerabilities because physical damage had been artificially inflicted throughout the area that was rendered defective at the time of manufacturing. The bonded surfaces for the cracked areas and detached fragments did not fit, and these areas and fragments had deteriorated because the adhesive trickled down onto the celadon surface or secondary contaminants, such as dust, were on the adhesive surface. The study identified the position, scope, and conditions of the bonded areas at the cracks UV rays and microscopy in order to investigate the condition of repair and restoration. By conducting Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR) and portable x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy on the materials used for the former conservation treatment, the study confirmed the use of cellulose resins and epoxy resins as adhesives. Furthermore, the analysis revealed the addition of gypsum(CaSO4·2H2O) and bone meal(Ca10 (PO4)6(OH)2) to the adhesive to increase the bonding strength of some of the bonded areas that sustained force. Based on the results of the investigation, the conservation treatment for the artifact would focus on completely dismantling the existing bonded areas and then consolidating vulnerable areas through bonding and restoration. After removing and dismantling the prior adhesive used, the celadon stool was separated into 6 large fragments including the top and bottom, the curved legs, and some of the ring design. After dismantling, the remaining adhesive and contaminants were chemically and physically removed, and a steam cleaner was used to clean the fractured surfaces to increase the bonding efficacy of the re-bonding. The bonding of the artifact involved applying the adhesive differently depending on the bonding area and size. The cyanoacrylate resin Loctite 401 was used on the bonding area that held the positions of the fragments, while the acrylic resin Paraloid B-72 20%(in xylene) was treated on cross sections for reversibility in the areas that provided structural stability before bonding the fragments using the epoxy resin Epo-tek 301-2. For areas that would sustain force, as in the top and bottom, kaolin was added to Epo-tek 301-2 in order to reinforce the bonding strength. For the missing parts of the ring design where a continuous pattern could be assumed, a frame was made using SN-sheets, and the ring design was then modeled and restored by connecting the damaged cross section with Wood epos. Other restoration areas that occurred during bonding were treated by being filled with Wood epos for aesthetic and structural stabilization. Restored and filled areas were color-matched to avoid the feeling of disharmony from differences of texture in case of exhibitions in the future. The investigation and treatment process involving a variety of scientific technology was systematically documented so as to be utilized as basic data for the conservation and maintenance.

  • The material characteristics of Chos$\breve{o}$n whiteware were investigated by analyzing and comparing the body and glaze compositions of whiteware shards excavated at the Kwangju royal kilns, Ch'unghyodong, and four other local-level kilns. In Korea, the rise of whiteware technology began in the early years of the Chos$\breve{o}$n dynasty, when the indigenous tradition of Kory$\breve{o}$ celadon was strongly influenced by the whiteware aesthetics of the Chinese Ming dynasty. The Kwangju royal kilns eventually made hard-textured whiteware of a quality equivalent to that of the Chinese by using type of porcelain stone that contained slightly less $Fe_2O_3$ and $TiO_2$ and slightly more $K_2O$ than that used for celadon. In contrast, the potters of Ch'unghyodong achieved the same level of quality by finding and using a totally different material: kaolinitic clay. The porcelain stone used at the Kwangju kiln was commonly found in Korea and south China, whereas kaolinitic clay (which has a high aluminum content) was typically found in north China, and was only rarely used in Korea. The flux component of the glaze compositions was mostly limestone, first in burnt form and later in crushed form, and the clay component was often glaze stone, which was a finer-grained porcelain stone with a higher proportion of feldspar. In the future, this comparative analytical study of Korean whiteware components should be extended to the $18^{th}$- and $19^{th}$-century kilns that are currently being excavated at a rapid pace.

  • 우리가 간단히 사용하는 언어는 실제적으로 아주 복잡한 진행과정을 가지고 있다. 사전상의 각 어휘는 대화상황에서 상호 작용하는 초기단계의 역할을 하며, 표현은 과거나 현재에 행해지는 대화상황 및 대화참여자의 발화 과정에서 생기는 일종의 일체감을 표시한다. 의사 소통을 한다는 것은 단어나 문장에 대한 다양한 의미와 각각의 개념에서 지시되는 표현을 수단으로 발생하는 대화상의 연관성을 의미한다. 이러한 모든 것은 의사소통에 있어 의미의 다양성과 관련을 맺고있다. 우리는 표현을 통하여 매우 복잡하고 다양한 양상들을 볼 수 있다. 대화내용에 따라 똑같은 표현들이 서로 다르게 이해될 수 있기 때문이다. 언어는 단지 사람이 행하는 언어처리의 일부만을 보여줄 뿐이다 언어를 처리하는데 있어서 문제가 되는 것은 매우 복잡하고 구성적인 진행과정이다. 청자는 의사소통이 진행되는 과정에서 활자와 함께 주어진 정보를 처리함으로써 상황을 내적 형상화하게 된다. 따라서 청자는 표현의 의미를 이해하려고 노력하며, 다양한 방법을 동원한 지식을 사용한다. 의사소통에 있어서 통사적$\cdot$의미적인 지식, 문맥에 맞는 대화지식 혹은 일반 지식을 대화상황에 맞게 적용하는 것이 그 예라 할 수 있다. 지시적 언어의 표현은 사전적으로 고정된 단어의 의미를 규정하거나 또는 이와 같은 단어의 의미에 정확하고 적절한 지시사를 규정하는 근거가 된다. 인칭$\cdot$장소$\cdot$시간을 지시하는 언어 Personal-, Lokal-, Temporaldeixis는 언어 시스템을 형성하게 되는데, 활자와 청자는 이러한 표현을 인칭$\cdot$장소$\cdot$시간으로 형상화하면서 의사소통을 한다. 따라서 자연어의 처리과정에 나타나는 다양한 표현들에 대한 심리학 및 언어학의 강력한 연구가 요구된다.에 기대어 텍스트, 문장, 어휘영역 등이 투입되어 적용되었으며, 이에 상응되게 구체적인 몇몇 방안들이 제시되었다. 학습자들이 텍스트를 읽고 중심내용을 찾아내며, 단락을 구획하고 또한 체계를 파악하는데 있어서 어휘연습은 외국어 교수법 측면에서도 매우 관여적이며 시의적절한 과제라 생각된다. Archaeomagnetic Dating of Baked Earth Samples of Samheung-ri Kilns in Gangjin Region (강진 삼흥리 가마 소토시료의 고고지자기 연대측정)

  • Investigation on relics was performed by dividing the site of Samheung-ri, Gangjin-gun, Jeonranam-do into six districts, A to F, and as a result, total 16 kilns including Celadon kilns and pottery kilns were found. Among them, total 9 kilns found from A D E F districts including 3 Celadon kilns, 6 pottery kilns, went through archaeomagnetic analysis with baked earth samples collected from them. Since those baked earth samples showed good baking conditions as well as high soil quality, it was possible to gain archaeomagnetic data with high reliability. Through archaeomagnetic analysis, it was possible to obtain archaeomagnetic dating for each of the 9 kilns corresponding to the period between A.D. 990~1250, and the results also correspond to archaeological dating estimated to fall under the period of Goryeo. Also, it was examined if there was any difference in the operational periods of the kilns by districts, and there was difference of periods from archaeomagnetic dating in the order of district D(A.D.1100) ${\rightarrow}$ E F(A.D.1180) ${\rightarrow}$ A(A.D.1210). This result tells us that the kilns in district D stopped operating the earliest and were deserted, and next, those in districts E and F almost at the same time, and lastly, those in district A operated to the last and then were disposed.
