  • In seawater deposition condition, the corrosion and chemical attack of grouts are similar to those of concrete structure. Used in domestic MSG (Micro Silica Grouting) mixtured large amounts of silicate materials containing as cement powder is $8,000cm^2/g$ of the specific surface area or more due to the high hydration activity and high-strength, high durability, and features, $C_3A$ content of less than 5% to meet the standards chemical attack of seawater was evaluated as a cement material. Therefore, in this paper, with excellent seawater attack resistant MSG in combination with rapid hardening mineral was used, those of seawater characteristics were evaluated experimentally. Typically, sodium-silicate minerals or rapid hardening cements are used in domestic. About the homogel specimens with combination of MSG and rapid hardening agents for compressive strength, weight and length change characteristics were evaluated experimentally, and so we could present the excellent seawater resistant grouts combination.

  • Recently, the development and field applications of Ternary Blended Cement(TBC), where blast furnace slag and fly ash are recycled in Ordinary Portland Cement(OPC) in order to obtain improvements in the durability and heat of hydration reduction performance in large scale civil structures, have been increasing. Also, there are continuing efforts by construction companies to reduce the construction time with the aim of reducing construction costs. Therefore, there is a need to improve the performance of TBC, which has a relatively slow early strength development. In order to improve the early strength of TBC mortar, the compressive strength, SO3 content, and SEM analysis was determined in this study on mortar with the fineness and content of blast furnace slag and anhydrite regulated. As a result, to secure the early strength of TBC mortar, using blast furnace slag with a fineness of approximately $4,200cm^2/g$, adding 3.5% anhydrite with a fineness of approximately $10,000cm^2/g$, and managing the $SO_3$ content to roughly 3.72% was found to provide the most outstanding early strength properties.

  • The unit-water content has a very significant effect on the durability of the construction structure and the quality of concrete. Although there are various methods for measuring the unit-water content, there are problems of time required for measurement, precision, and reproducibility. Recently, there is an FDR sensor capable of measuring moisture content in real time through an apparent dielectric constant change of electromagnetic waves. In addition, various artificial intelligence techniques that can non-linearly supplement the accuracy of FDR sensors are being studied. In this study, the accuracy of unit-water content measurement was compared and evaluated using machine learning and deep learning techniques after normalizing the data secured in concrete using frequency domain reflectometry (FDR) sensors used to measure soil moisture at home and abroad. The result of comparing the accuracy of machine learning and deep learning is judged to be excellent in the accuracy of deep learning, which can well express the nonlinear relationship between FDR sensor data and concrete unit-water content.

  • In this study, the relative effects of low-chloride deicier(LCD) and two other deicing agents on the scaling of concrete were conducted in a series of tests at laboratory accordance with the ASTM C 672. The solutions concentration of deicers tested included 1, 4, 10%. Tap water was used as control. The amount of scaling was evaluated gravimetrically. As test result of deicer solution types, when applied to 4% solutions, surface scaling of concrete after 56 freeze-thaw cycles was produced significantly as about 9 times on LCD solution, as about 18 times on $CaCl_2$ solution, and as about 33 times on NaCl solution comparing with tap water. As test result of deicer solution concentrations, relatively low concentrations (of the 4% by weight) of deicer were produced more surface scaling than higher concentrations (of the 10% by weight) or lower concentrations (of the 1% by weight) of deicer. It show that the damaging concentration is of the order of 3~4% for previous research result. It appears that the mechanism of surface scaling is primarily physical rather than chemical. Also, the effect of chloride deicier types, freeze-thaw cycling, and air contents on the performance of concrete was experimentally investigated. The results show that the concrete specimens subjected to freeze-thaw cycling scaled more severely in exposure to deicing salt than those in non-exposure to deicing salt, weight losses of the specimens tested in exposure to deicing salt were twice as much as those tested in non-exposure to deicing salt. Relative dynamic modulus of elasticity of concrete specimens decreased more quickly in exposure to deicing salt than in non-exposure to deicing salt. Also, relative dynamic modulus of elasticity of concrete specimens in exposure to sodium chloride deicing salt was decreased more quickly comparing with exposure to LCD salt. It is also shown that the chloride contents according to concrete specimen depths was more largely in exposure to LCD salt. When concrete specimen is exposed to chloride deicing salts and freeze-thaw cycling, performance degradation in the entrained air concrete(AE concrete) retarded more considerably comparing with non-entrained air concrete(Non-AE concrete).

  • The cracks occurred during service life of concrete structure should be considered in durability design, because of the concrete's material property which is weak in tensile strength. In this study, the fly ash concrete mixtures considering 2 levels of strength is designed and outdoor exposure tests are conducted for those concrete specimens. The exposure environment is set to a splash zone, and in order to evaluate the effect of crack width on the behavior of chloride diffusion, the crack width of up to 1.0 mm is generated at intervals of 0.1 mm at each concrete mixture. After that, apparent chloride diffusion coefficient and surface chloride contents are deducted considering 3 levels of exposure periods(180 days, 365 days, 730 days). The diffusion coefficients of two types of mixture increase with the increase of crack width, and the diffusion coefficients decrease with the increase of exposure periods. In addition, the effect of the crack width on the diffusion coefficient is reduced as the exposure periods increase, which is attributed to the extra hydrate by chloride ion reducing the diffusivity of concrete. The behavior of the surface chloride contents does not significantly change by the increase in crack width, compared to the behavior of apparent chloride diffusion coefficient. Also, In the high strength FA concrete mixture, the surface chloride contents are 78.9 % ~ 90.7 % than the normal FA strength concrete mixture. Thus, Surface chloride contents have correlation with the strength of concrete.

  • Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) sheets have been successfully used to retrofit a number of existing concrete buildings and structures because of their excellent properties (high strength, light weight and high durability). Bond characteristics between FRP sheets and concrete should be investigated to ensure an effective retrofitting system. RC structures strengthened with FRP sheets are often subjected to cyclic load (traffic, seismic, temperature, etc.). This research addresses a local bond stress-slip relationship under cyclic loading conditions for the FRP-concrete interface. 18 specimens were prepared with three types of FRP sheets (aramid, carbon, and polyacetal) and two types of sheet layer(one or two). The characteristics of bond stress-slip were verified through experimental results on load-displacement relationship.

  • An experimental study was performed to investigate flexural performance and bond characteristics of RC beams strengthened using ductile polyethylene terephthalate(PET) with low elastic modulus. Bond tests were planned and completed following CSA S806. Test variables were fiber type and fiber amount. Also, total of 8 RC beams was tested. Major test variables of the beam tests included section ductility(${\mu}=3.4$, 7.0), fiber type(CF, GF, PET) and amount of fiber strengthening. Moment-curvature analyses of the beam sections were also performed. In bond tests, the bond stress distribution as well as the maximum bond stress increased with increasing amount of PET. In case of 10 layers of PET, the effective bond length was 60 mm with the maximum and the average bond stress of 2.33 and 2.10 MPa, respectively. RC beam test results revealed that the moment capacity of the RC beams strengthened using PET 10 and 20 layers increased over the control beam with little reduction in ductility by fiber strengthening. All beams strengthened using PET resulted in ductile flexural failure without any sign of fiber debonding or fiber rupture. It was important to include the mechanical properties of adhesive in the moment-curvature analysis of PET-strengthened beam sections.

  • FRP is a new material that is light, has high strength and high durability, and is emerging as a third construction material inside and outside of countries. However, very few studies have been done on curved FRP construction materials that can be used for tunnels or arched bridges. Because a small composite panel specimen is smaller than a full-size specimen, it can be used in a variety of experiments under different conditions. Therefore, in this study, experiments were performed on a void section, a solid section, a connected solid section, and a sand-coating solid section. The results of the experiment show that the connection of composite curved panels with longitudinal connections provides almost equivalent performance to that of a single panel. However, it is necessary to strengthen the connections, since the connections that are most susceptible to damage will break first.

  • Recently, the durability of concrete structures has received great attention as the number of sea-side structures, such as new airport, bridges, and nuclear power plants, increases continuously. In this regards, many studies have been done on the chloride attack in concrete structures. However, those studies were confined mostly to the single deterioration due to chloride only, although actual environment is rather of combined type. The purpose of the present study is, therefore, to explore the effects of combined deterioration due to chlorides and sulfates in concrete structures. To this end, comprehensive experimental program has been set up to observe the chloride penetration behavior for various test series. The test results indicate that the chloride penetration is more pronounced for the case of combined attack than the case of single chloride attack. The surface chloride content is found to increase with time and the diffusion coefficient for chloride is found to decrease with time. The prediction equations for surface chloride content and diffusion coefficient were proposed according to test results. The equations for chloride penetration considering the time-dependent diffusion coefficients and surface chlorides were also suggested. The present study allows more realistic assessment of durability for such concrete structures which are subjected to combined attacks of chlorides and high concentration sulfates but the future studies for combined environment will assure the precise assessment.

  • For developing the durable eco-concrete, water-repellent and hydrophobic emulsion were prepared by stirring and mixing polymethyl hydrosiloxane and polyvinyl alcohol. After adding the PMHS emulsion cement paste, the hydration reaction characteristics and the change in chemical composition were analyzed through BSE and EDS analysis, and the micropores were evaluated by MIP test. Cement mixed with PMHS emulsion was analyzed to increase the hydration reactivity and to decrease the capillary porosity, but it was found that the capillary porosity varies depending on the degree of dispersion of the emulsion in the cement paste. In the case of the emulsion containing metakaolin, there was little difference in hydration degree and porosity from the case of using only the PMHS emulsion. However, when the cement surface was coated with PMHS emulsion, the contact angle was found to increase significantly compared to OPC, and it was analyzed that especially when PVA fiber was used together, it changed to a hypohydrophobic surface.
