  • In this work, the high-altitude environment simulation study was carried out at an altitude of 65 km exceeding Mach number of 6 after the launch of Korean Space Launch Vehicle using a shock tunnel. To minimize the flow disturbance due to the strut support of test model as much as possible, a few different types of strut configurations were considered. Using the configuration with minimum disturbance, the high-altitude environment simulation experiment including a propulsion system with a single-plume, was conducted. From the thruster test through flow visualization, not only a shockwave pattern, but a general flow-field pattern from the mutual interaction between the exhaust plume and the free-stream undisturbed flow, was experimentally observed. The comparison with the computation fluid dynamic(CFD) results, showed a good agreement in the forebody whereas in the afterbody and the nozzle the disagreement was about ${\pm}7%$ due to unwanted shockwave formation emanated from the nozzle-exit.

  • A small high altitude test facility has been developed to investigate ignition performance of a small gas-turbine combustor under high altitude conditions. Supersonic diffusers and a heat exchanger were used to perform a low pressure and a low temperature condition, respectively. Experimental results showed that the low pressure environment could be controlled by upstream pressure of primary nozzle flow and low temperature environment by mixture ratio of cooled air and ambient air. Ignition performance tests were performed to verify the performance of the facility under simulated high altitude conditions. Conclusively, it was proven that the test facility could be used for ignition performance test of a small gas-turbine combustor under high altitude condition of approximately 6,100m.

  • In this study, numerical and experimental studies on the nozzle flow in a sub-scale cold flow test were conducted to simulate high altitude condition. In the theoretical calculation, the temperature of the nozzle outlet is calculated to be lower than the liquefaction point, and the fluid exists at the phase change point. Also, numerical analysis result is higher than theory calculation but lower than liquefaction temperature. As a result of cold flow test, it was confirmed that the temperature was much higher than theory and analysis. This is because it assumed that it is adiabatic in the theoretical calculation, but the experiment in the actual environment is not the adiabatic but the heat exchange with the outside exists.

  • In this study, ignition tests of a gas turbine combustor were performed to evaluate an ignition loop at low temperature condition. An experimental setup was constructed to simulate low temperature condition with a heat exchanger using dry ice as a coolant. Various low temperature conditions could be created by controlling the amount of air though the heat exchanger. The results showed that ignition limit decreased with air temperature.

  • In this study, a cold flow test was carried out on a high-speed vehicle facility with a high-altitude environment simulator. Variable test was carried out according to the blockage ratio, angle, and length of the test model. It is confirmed that the blockage rate can be operated in the range of 40%, and that the model should be selected at an angle of 45 degrees or less. The variables of length are less dominant compared to the variables of blockage rate and angle. Through this, a database is obtained according to the parameters of the conical model of the high-speed vehicle test facility.

  • In this study, the cold test and the numerical analysis were carried out according to the shape parameters of the test model in order to confirm the operation range of high altitude environment simulation test facility for the supersonic vehicle. The blockage ratio, angle and length ratio were considered as the design parameters. The blockage rate is expected to be limited in the region of more than 40% due to the normal shock and expansion fan. It was confirmed that the angle of model should be selected at the size of 45 degrees or less due to the influence of the strong shock wave. There was no difference in performance between the lengths of 8 times the model diameter. Finally, we obtained the performance database according to the shape parameters of the conical test model and confirmed the operable range of the semi-freejet type high altitude environment simulation test facility.

  • The experimental research on a high-altitude environment simulation of space launch vehicle is important for securing independent technologies with launching space vehicles and completing missions. This study selected an altitude of 65 km for the experiment environment where it exceeded Mach number of 6 after the launch of Korean Space Launch Vehicle(KSLV-II). Shock tunnel was used to replicate the flight condition. After flow establishment, in order to confirm aerodynamic characteristics and normal and oblique shockwaves, the flow verification was carried out by measuring stagnation pressure and heat flux of a forebody model, and shockwave stand-off distance of a hemispherical model. In addition, a shock-free technique to recover free-stream condition has been developed and verified. From the results of the three verification tests, it was confirmed that the flow was replicated with the error of about ${\pm}3%$. The error between the slope angle of inclined shockwave of the scaled down transition section model using the shock-free shape and the slope angle of the horizontal plate model, and between the theoretical and the experimental value of the static pressure of the model were confirmed to be 2% and 1%, respectively. As a result, the efficiency of the shockwave cancellation technique has been verified.

  • Performance tests of supersonic exhaust diffuser were conducted by using hot combustion gas for simulating high-altitude environment. The test rig consists of a combustion chamber, a vacuum chamber, water cooling ring and diffuser. Before combustion experiments, the preliminary leak tests were carried out on the liquid rocket engine and diffuser by using high pressure nitrogen(30barg) and a vacuum pump. The leak test results showed that there was no leaks at high pressure and vacuum pressure conditions.

  • In this study, we design an altitude test facility for hypersonic propulsion engine by constructing a test facility and cold flow test. Cold flow test is performed both with and without test models. The results show that the facility can simulate almost similar altitude condition without any significant change in pressure regardless of test models. We also constructed a database that might be useful for a variable test in the future.
