  • This study evaluated fire resistance performance for hybrid (polypropylene+steel) fiber reinforced high strength concrete column. Full-size columns were constructed and tested with or without fibers using ISO-834 fire curve. As the result of test, Control specimen occurred serious spalling and indicated rapidly internal temperature increasing. Specimen with polypropylene fiber occurred not spalling but steady internal temperature increasing. Specimen with hybrid fiber occurred not spalling as well as does not propagated temperature distribution. Therefore, hybrid fiber reinforced column specimen indicated a good fire resistance performance than other cases.

  • The use of high-strength concrete which permits smaller cross sections, reduced dead loads, and longer spans has been getting more popular in tall buildings. However, there has been little research on behavior of high-strength concrete columns laterally reinforced with square ties and subjected to compressive loading. With the addition of transverse reinforcement which lead to triaxial compressive state, ductility behavior of high-strength column member shall be increased. In this study, rational quality and quantity evaluations were made to investigate the ultimate strength and strain ductility by confinement effect of tie reinforced high-strength concrete columns subject to uniaxial loads. Concrete failure theory at the triaxial compressive state and statistical results based on conventional experimental data were applied for this propose. Up to 185 columns, tested under monotonically increasing concentric loading, were evaluated in terms of strength and strain ductility. Analytical results show that confinement stress, maximum compressive strength, and increase of strain equations were developed with the consideration of concrete strength, yield strength, spacing, volumetric ratio, and configurations of tie reinforcement.

  • A spalling is defined as the damages of concrete exposed to high temperature during the fire by causing cracks and localized bursting of small pieces of concrete. It is reported that spalling is caused by the vapor pressure and polypropylene(PP) fiber has an important role in protecting from spalling. The characteristics of fire resistance of high-strength reinforced concrete columns with various concrete strength and various contents of PP fiber were investigated in this study. In results, the ratio of unstressed residual strength of columns increases as the concrete strength increases and the ratio of unstressed residual strength of columns exposed to fire decreases as the content of PP fiber increases from 0% to 0.2%.

  • Fire resistance is a measure of the ability of building element to resist a fire. For concrete columns, the fire resistance depends on many factors, including strength, density, and moisture content of concrete, fire intensity, column size and shape, reinforcement detail, loading condition, and aggregate type etc. However, it is well-known that the high strength concrete (HSC) is more susceptible to spalling than normal strength concrete (NSC) and the behaviour of HSC column exposed to fire is significantly affected by the spalling. Recently, as one of the measures to reduce the spalling of HSC, incorporating polypropylene(PP) fiber has been investigated and successfully used in construction fields. However, the establishment of assessment method on the fire resistance of HSC column is very important as well as the improvement of fire performance of HSC. In this study, the variations on the fire resistance of HSC column with assessment methods was studied for the columns controlled the concrete spalling by PP fiber.

  • Two series of experiments on the performance of beam-column joints in High-Strength Reinforced concrete frames were carried out. Main experimental parameters were : concrete strength, column axial load and amount of joint hoop reinforcement. Test result showed that the ultimate shear strength of exterior joints increased of column axial compressive force and the amount of the joint hoop reinforcements. Through the regression analysis on the 24data, the following equation is obtained $jv_u=(2.935{\times}10-3\;{\rho}jw{\cdot}fy\;+\;0.365){\sqrt{f_{ck}}}$

  • This study evaluated spalling and internal temperature distribution after elevated temperatures test for high strength concrete ($f_{ck}=60\;MPa$) column member with various polypropylene fiber volume fractions. The ISO-834 time-temperature curve was used for measurement of fire resistance properties. As the result of test, average internal temperature results indicated to low temperature in increased polypropylene fiber volume fraction. But, the highest internal temperature results show that does not difference in proportion of polypropylene fiber volume fractions.

  • In this study, the structural performance of high strength concrete (HSC) column-normal strength concrete (NSC) slab connection was investigated according to confinement effects, aspect ratio (h/c) and strength ratio ($f^{\prime}_{cc}/f_{cs}$). The study was conducted by using finite element analysis. To verify the analysis methods, the experiments and analyses results were compared. The specimens were classified by connection types including interior column, edge column, corner column and isolated column. As a result, ultimate strength of interior column was larger than other specimens. Also, the axial stresses of connection were decreased when the aspect ratio was increased. As the strength ratio between column and slab was increased, the ultimate strength of specimens was also increased until the strength ratio was reached to 1.83.

  • Numerous past studies have shown that safety and serviceability of many concrete infrastructures and buildings built in 1970's have far less strength capacities than their original intended design capacities, thereby requiring repair and strengthening. Currently, aged concrete structures are being repaired using various methods developed in the past. Unfortunately, these methods do not consider the specific conditions that these members are under, but they merely attach repairing materials on the external surface for random strength improvements. Therefore, in order to improve repair and strengthening methods by considering composite behavior between repairing material and structural member, enhanced construction methodologies are needed. Also, the enhanced repairing and strengthening methods must be able to be implemented on structural members constructed using high performance concrete to meet the present construction demand of building mammoth structures. Therefore, in this study, a repairing and strengthening method for retrofitting high strength concrete (HSC) columns that can effectively improve column performance is developed. A square HSC column's cross-sectional shape is converted to an octagonal shape by attaching precast members on the surface of the column. Then, the octagonal column surface is surface wrapped using Carbon Fiber Sheets (CFS). The method allows maximum usage of confinement effect from externally jacketing CFS to improve strength and ductility of repaired HSC columns. The research results are discussed in detail.
