Studies on the Photosynthesis of Korean Ginseng III. Effects of the Light Transparent Rate of Shading on the Photosynthesis Ability of Korean Ginseng Plant (Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer) (고려인삼엽의 광합성능력에 관한 연구 III. 투광율이 광합성 능력에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to define the effects of light transparent rate of the shading on the photosynthesis ability of the ginseng leaves and their seasonal changes. Regardless the effects of light transparent rate of shading and age of ginseng plant, 10,000 lux was the most adequate light intensity for the maximum photosynthesis of ginseng leaves and seasonal difference was not significant. The ginseng plants which were grown under 10 to 15 percent light transparent shading showed the highest photosynthesis ability. The photosynthesis ability of ginseng leaves was significantly decreased in September than June and the decreasing rate was higher at the ginseng plants planted on back rows than front rows. In June, the ginseng plants grown under 10 to 15 percent light transparent shading showed high respiration amount but in September, those grown under 20 to 25% light transparent shading showed the highest respiration. The amount of chlorophyll of ginseng leaf was significantly decreased by increasing light transparent rate of shading.

The Effect of Weather and Season on Pedestrian Volume in Urban Space (도시공간에서 날씨와 계절이 보행량에 미치는 영향)

  • This study empirically analyzes the effect of weather on pedestrian volume in an urban space. We used data from the 2009 Seoul Flow Population Survey and constructed a model with the pedestrian volume as a dependent variable and the weather and physical environment as independent variables. We constructed 28 models and compared the results to determine the effects of weather on pedestrian volume by season, land use, and time zone. A negative binomial regression model was used because the dependent variable did not have a normal distribution. The results show that weather affects the volume of walking. Rain reduced walking volume in most models, and snow and thunderstorms reduced the volume in a small number of models. The effects of the weather depended on the season and land use, and the effects of environmental factors depended on the season. The results have various policy implications. First, it is necessary to provide semi-outdoor urban spaces that can cope with snow or rain. Second, it is necessary to have different policies to encourage walking for each season.

Effects of Climate-Changes on Patterns of Seasonal Changes in Bird Population in Rice Fields using a Prey-Predator Model (포식자-피식자 모델을 이용하여 기후변화가 논습지를 이용하는 조류 개체군 동태에 미치는 영향 예측)

  • BACKGROUND: It is well known that rice-fields can provide excellent foraging places for birds including seasonal migrants, wintering, and breeding and hence the high biodiversity of rice-fields may be expected. However, how environmental change including climate-changes on life-history and population dynamics in birds on rice-fields has not been fully understood. In order to investigate how climate-change affects population migratory patterns and migration timing, I modeled a population dynamics of birds in rice-fields over a whole year. METHODS AND RESULTS: I applied the Lotka-Volterra equation to model the population dynamics of birds that have been foraging/visiting rice-fields in Korea. The simple model involves the number of interspecific individuals and temperature, and the model parameters are periodic in time as the biological activities related to the migration, wintering and reproduction are seasonal. As results, firstly there was a positive relationship between the variation of seasonal population sizes and temperature change. Secondly, the reduced lengths of season were negatively related to the population size. Overall, the effects of the difference of lengths of season on seasonal population dynamics were higher than the effects of seasonal temperature change. CONCLUSION(S): Climate change can alter population dynamics of birds in rice-fields and hence the variation may affect the fitness, such as reproduction, survival and migration. The unstable balances of population dynamics in birds using paddy rice field as affected by climate change can reduce the population growth and species diversity in rice fields. The results suggest that the agricultural production is partly affected by the unstable balance of population in birds using rice-fields.

  • 시계열자료에는 흔히 대부분의 자료에서 벗어나는 이상치들이 포함되어 있는데, 이러한 자료는 관측치들 사이의 종속구조로 인해 분석과정에 영향을 끼칠 수 있고, 특히 연속시점에서 발생하는 경우에 그 영향이 매우 심각할 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 연속이상치(PO)가 Winters 계절지수모형의 분석과정에 미치는 영향을 유도하고, 예측 평균제곱오차(MSFE)를 구하여 연속이상치가 예측에 미치는 영향을 제시하였다. 또한, 실제자료를 이용하여 연속이상치의 영향을 실증적으로 분석하였다.

Seasonal Adjustment on Chain-Linking (연쇄가중법 도입에 따른 계절변동조정)

  • Chain-linking is a method for aggregating volume measures which would improve the quality of estimates of economic growth over the present fixed base in Korea. There is a risk that choice of chain-linking techniques such annual overlap, one-quarter overlap or over-the-year overlap may create an artificial seasonality to the volume series. The empirical results on Korean GDP suggest that the use of the annual overlap is recommended. And conducting seasonal adjustment after chain-linking to produce the chain-linked seasonally adjusted GDP is more appropriated in Korea.

  • 국내에서 양계를 사양하기 어려운 조건 중 하나가 계절적 요인이라 할 수 있겠다. 4계절이 있는 국내에서 양계 사양관리는 계절변화 요인이 적게 나타나는 동남아와 일부 유럽에 비하여 관리하기 까다로운 것이 사실이다. 국내기후는 건실한 시설과 그에 맞는 관리를 요구하는 환절기가 존재하여 생산성에 영향을 주고 있다고 표현하는 것이 맞는 것 같다. 환절기 사양관리 중에 주의해서 관리해야 할 사항 중 제일 중점적으로 점검해야 할 사항이 환기가 아닌가 한다.

Distributions and heterotrophic actibities of bacteria in Lake Paro (파로호 수중생태계에서의 미생물 분포 및 활성도)

  • The distributions of bacterial numbers and activities were studied bimonthly in 1987, at 3 sites in Lade Paro for elucidating the changes by disturbance of aquatic ecosystem. The total bacterial number was $0.3\times 10^{5}-13.1\times ^{5}$ cells/ml. The geterotrophic bacterial number had the variance from $1.9\times 10^{3}$ CFUs/ml to $3.1\times 10^{4}$CFUs/ml and the variation trend was similar to that of the total bacterial number. The proportions of alpha-glucosidase or beta-glucosidase releasing bacteria showed temporal changes rather than spatial changes. The proportions of phosphatase releasing bacteria had the maximum values, 22.7-83.0%, in July. The electron transpory system activity revealed the variation from $480{\mu}gO_{2}$/l/day to $1696{\mu}gO_{2}$/l/day and hagher values at upper stream and in summer. The degradation fraction by phosphatase was 0.4-9.1%/h and increased with temperature. The maximum value of heterotrophic activity was 8.2%/h in summer. Eventhough the distributions of total bacteria and heterotrophic bacteria were affected by the water disturbance but microbial activities and proportions of the specific enzume releasing bacteria were not affected.

Estimation of the Interface of Seawater Intrusion in a Coastal Aquifer System with SHARP Model (SHARP 모델을 이용한 해안 대수층의 해수침투 경계면 추정)

  • SHARP numerical model was used to estimate the interface, ranges and seasonal variations of seawater intrusion. The interface obtained from the SHARP model represented more sensitive to seasonal variations than that estimated from the monitoring wells. When TDS and groundwater velocity vector distributions generated by SUTRA simulations are compared to the interfaces obtained from SHARP simulation, the difference of the range on seawater intrusion is less than 50 m, and the range of seawater intrusion from seasonal variations has the difference of about 12 m. These differences are small for the numerical simulation of the coastal aquifer at regional scale. Therefore, the model with sharp interface is very useful to estimate the interface at this study site, where is regional aquifer system in the scale of seawater infusion. However the SHARP model have some limitations in simulating the range of seawater intrusion, when the hydrodynamic dispersion is significant for seawater intrusion at local aquifer system.
