  • The sound wave in the sea propagates under the effect of water depth, sound velocity structure, sea surface and bottom roughness, and bottom sediment distribution. In particular the sound velocity structure in shallow water varies with time and space, an? the sediment distributes very variedly with place. In order to investigate the seasonal variation of low-frequency sound propagation in the Yellow Sea, the propagation experiments were conducted along the same track in the middle part of the Yellow Sea at various seasons of spring. summer, and autumn. In this paper we consider the measurement results on the propagation loss with the sound velocity structure, and investigate the seasonal variation of the propagation loss. As a result, the propagation losses measured in summer were larger than the losses in spring and autumn. And the propagation losses measured in autumn were smaller than the losses in spring. The seasonal change of the propagation loss increased with the rise of sound frequency and the propagation range.

  • In this study, we developed strategies for pre-processing GNSS data for the purpose of separating geodetic factors from crustal deformation due to the earthquakes. Before interpreting GNSS data analysis results, we removed false signals from GNSS coordinate time series. Because permanent GNSS stations are located on a large tectonic plate, GNSS position estimates should be affected by the tectonic velocity of the plate. Also, stations with surrounding trees have seasonal signals in their three-dimensional coordinate estimates. Thus, we have estimated the location of an Euler pole and angular velocities to deduce the plate tectonic velocity and verified with geological models. Also, annual amplitudes and initial phases were estimated to get rid of those false annual signals showing up in the time series. By considering the two effects, truly geodetic analysis was possible and the result was used as preliminary data for analyzing post-seismic deformation of the Korean peninsula due to the Tohoku-oki earthquake.

  • Seasonal and year-to-year variations of water quality were observed at six stations in Mokpo Harbor area between 1997 and 2004. Water quality(salinity, pH, DIN and DIP) was variable between years. Salinity was significantly low in 1998, while nutrient concentrations were significantly higher in 1998 than other years. Water temperature, salinity, DO, COD and DIP concentrations exhibited clear seasonal variations, and these seasonal trends reflected seasonal changes in fresh water discharge from Youngsan river mouth. Water temperature, COD and DIP were significantly higher in August, while salinity and DO reached minimum values in August. In the station 1(Youngsan river mouth), waters with low salinity are subject to high nutrient inputs from Youngsan river, while in the station 6 (outside from Mokpo harbor) waters are primarily oceanic Relationship between water quality parameters indicates that salinity is the primary factor influencing the COD, DO, pH, Chlorophyll a and nutrient concentrations in Mokpo harbor area.

  • The performance of a novel fermentation process, adopting a sludge blanket type configuration for higher hydrolysis/acidogenesis of the municipal primary sludge, was investigated under batch and semi-continuous conditions with various pH and temperature conditions. This acid elutriation slurry reactor provided higher system performance with a short HRT (5 days) and higher acidogenic effluent quality under pH 9 and thermophilic ($55^{\circ}C$) conditions. The hydrolysis of the sludge was revealed to be significantly dependent on seasonal effects for sludge characteristics but with little impact on acidogenesis. Based on the rainy season at the optimum conditions, VFA production and recovery fraction ($VFA_{COD}/COD$) were $0.18\;g\;VFA_{COD}\;g^{-1}\;VSS_{COD}$ and 63%. As byproducts, nitrogen and phosphorus releasing were $0.006\;g\;N\;g^{-1}\;VSS_{COD}$ and $0.003\;g\;P\;g^{-1}\;VSS_{COD}$, respectively. For the mass balance in a full-scale plant($Q=158,880\;m^3\;day^{-1}$) based on the rainy season, the VFA and non-VFA(as COD) production were $3,110\;kg\;VFA_{COD}\;day^{-1}$ and $1,800\;kg\;COD\;day^{-1}$, resulting in an increase of organics of $31\;mg\;COD\;L^{-1}$ and $20\;mg\;VFA_{COD}\;L^{-1}$ and nutrients of $0.7\;mg\;N\;L^{-1}$ and $0.3\;mg\;P\;L^{-1}$ in the influent sewage. The economical benefit from this process application was estimated to be about $67 per $1,000m^3$ of sewage except for energy requirements and also, better benefits can be expected during the dry season. Also, the results revealed that the process has various additional advantages such as pathogen-free stabilized solids production, excellent solids control and economical benefits.

  • At gas stations, liquid fuels expand and contract in volume owing to temperature variations. In Korea, the ambient temperature varies between $-15^{\circ}C$ in winter and $35^{\circ}C$ in summer. The volume expansion coefficients of liquid fuels are about $0.1%/^{\circ}C$. To investigate this issue, we measured daily changes in fuel temperature and the delivered fuel temperature at gas stations. In addition, we scrutinized the daily, monthly, and annual changes in temperature over past 50 years in Korea. The results show that the temperature of the fuel in the storage tank was maintained at a stable value(summer or winter). Many factors, such as the surrounding conditions, fuel filling frequency, and gas station location, influence the delivered fuel temperature. The results of this study can be applied for establishing a national regulation and will contribute to fair transactions.

  • The Chongok karst cave which is located in Donghae-city, has high tourist and educational value due to existence of many doline(sink hole). Whereas this cave is easy to approach for the tourists, because this cave is located near the downtown, a high environmental riskiness such as sewage flowing has been also involved. In study, we observed the variation of water quality with long-term monitoring and investigated the possibility of existence of impact factor to water eco-system and determined the proper long-term monitoring factor among many monitoring criteria. The groundwater quality was maintained in the range of about $14^{\circ}C$ in temperature, over 10mg/l in dissolved oxygen and 7-8 in pH, so the impact factor in water eco-system was not observed. The guide line to make sure of tourist safety was determined to 60mm/d as daily rainfall. The conductivity was suggested to main factor for long-term monitoring main factor and pH/turbidity was suitable for the supplementary factor. For the seasonal variation monitoring, ORP was recommended.

  • The joint cruises of six times between Korea and China were carried out for a better understanding of the environmental and oceanographical characteristics of the Yellow Sea for 6 years from 1998 to 2003. Zooplankton samples were collected one time per year at 24 stations on 3 lines of the Yellow Sea. The aim of this study is to understand the seasonal fluctuation of zooplankton community in the Yellow Sea. There is no trend on the spatio-temporal distribution of zooplankton. Copepoda, the major taxon of the Yellow Sea, was high in distribution in the eastern part and Chaetognatha in the western part of the Yellow Sea. In this results, the dominant copepods were Calanus sinicus, Paracalanus parvus s.l., Oithona atlantica, and Corycaeus affinis during the study periods. The density fluctuation of these dominant species may be an important factor in determining the fisheries resource of the Yellow Sea.

  • Zooplankton was sampled vertically with a Norpac net from Gamag Bay in April, July, September and December, 2001. Copepods were predominant in April and December, and cladocerans in July and Noctituca scintillans in September, respectively. There are high spatio-temporal fluctuations in the abundance of zooplankton with a range of 22-17,197 indiv.$m^3$. In the copepod community, neritic species, Eurytemora pacifica, Acartia omorii, Centropages abdominalis and Calanus sinicus were predominant in April ; Labidocera rotunda and A. erythraea in July; A. erythraea and Paracalanus parvus s. 1. in September; A. omorii and E. pacifica in December. However, oceanic species Eucalanus sp. and Neocalanus sp. were abundant in September. It indicates that although Gamag Bay is semi-closed, the distribution pattern of zooplankton is seasonally strongly affected by oceanic waters in addition to neritic ones.
