  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the opimum media, media amount and planting density of nutri-culture for the high quality and yield of wild vegetable, Liguliaria fischeri Turez. The fried rice hull was recognized best media among perlite, sand and fried rice hull for nutri-culture of Ligularia fischeri Turcz. The yield on fried rice hull media at early growing stage was lower, but higher than in other media at late growing stage. Therefore, total yield in fried rice hull media was 15-29% higher than that of the existing perlite media. Growth and yield of Ligularia fischeri Turcz. were not significantly different between medium amounts, therefore considering economical efficiency and stability, the optimum medium amount was 105 $\iota/m^3$, Yield by planting density increased in the high density and 50 plants/$m^2$ was considered as proper planting density in nutri-culture of Liguliaria fishcheri Turcz.

  • Application of organic resources to agricultural land can increase crop yield by improving soil characteristics. The objective of this study was to evaluate effect of crop yield and soil physical properties including aggregate stability to application of organic resources in upland. The soybean was cultivated in a sandy loam field and a clay loam field located at Suwon and a sandy loam field located at Pyeongchang. The organic resources used in this study were rice straw compost (RSC), composted pig manure with sawdust (CPIG), composted poultry manure with sawdust (CPM), and cocopeat applied before sowing crop. Application rate of organic resources was determined based on carbon content and water content. The inorganic fertilizers were applied based on soil testing. In addition, the decomposition of RSC, CPIG, and cocopeat was characterized by isothermal incubation with sandy loam soil. The decomposition rate was highest for RSC followed by CPIG and cocopeat. Organic resource application increased yield of soybean, which effect was greater in clay loam than in sandy loam. In addition, increase in gas phase proportion by organic resource application was distinct in clay loam soil compared with sandy loam soil. In terms of aggregate stability, increasing effect was more obvious in sandy loam soils than in a clay loam soil. The highest yield was observed in RSC treatment plots for all the fields. Improvement of soybean yield and soil physical characteristics by cocopeat was not as much as that of the other organic resources. The results implied that RSC could be recommended for promoting aggregate stability and crop yield in upland cultivation.

  • Field experiment was conducted on a sandy clay loam paddy field in the Experimental Farm of the Kangwon National University for four years from 1995 to 1998 to evaluate the effect of different nitrogen fertilizers on soil property and rice yield. The size of each experimental plot was 75 m2. Basal application of fertilizer to the paddy field was on late April, and rice (cv. Odae) was sown with drill seeding on early May. Irrigation was done at 3 leaf stages after rice seeding. Electrical conductivity in soils treated with phosphate- and resin coated slow release fertilizers were relatively greater than those of the other fertilizer application. Available $P_2O_5$ concentration in soils after rice harvest increased significantly compared that in soil before field trial. Rice yield in transplanting culture were $6.516kg\;ha^{-1}$. The rice yield in the direct seeded paddy was 81.9 percents of the yield in the transplanted paddy. The rice yield in phosphate coated slow release fertilizer was the highest among various fertilizer trials in directly seeded dry paddy, while rice yield was the lowest in the organic fertilizer plus urea application. Rice yield between organic fertilizer plus urea and organic fertilizer application were not significantly different. The green manuring effect of rye in the direct seeded rice paddy in Chuncheon was low due to low temperature and short growth period.

  • With increasing the concerns of health improving foods. the demands of C. boreale M., which is a perennial flower and has been historically used for a natural medicine, become higher, recently, However, wild C. boreale M. collected in a mountatinous area is limited and not enough to cover all demands. The cultivation system and fertilization strategy are required to produce much amount of C. boreale M. with a good quality. We investigated the effects of soil amendment application on plant growth and effective components of C. boreale M. to develop efficient cultivation system. C. boreale M. was cultivated in a pot scale, and lime, fly ash, poultry manure compost and swine manure compost as an amendment applied with rate of 2, 20, 150 and $150Mg\;ha^{-1}$, respectively. Here, chemical fertilizers were applied with the same level ($N-P_2O_5-K_2O=150-80-80kg\;ha^{-1}$) in all treatments. Flower yields of C. boreale M., edible part as a natural medicine, were increased to 37 and 27% by swine and poultry manure compost application, respectively. Poultry manure compost amending (NPK+PMC) increased 3.6 times of proline content and 58% of total amino acids in the flower part more than chemical fertilization (NPK). But the contents of amino acids did not increase with amending liming materials like lime and fly ash. Cumambrin A, which is a sesquiterpene compound and has the effect of blood-pressure reduction, increased to 34 and 19% by lime and fly ash applications, respectively. Cumambrin A was significantly correlated with calcium content in the flower part of C. boreale M. Conclusively, soil amendments like compost and liming materials might contribute to increase the yields and quality of C. boreale M.

  • Three experiments on the addition of Porous Calcium Silicate (PCS) to broiler feed were conducted at different time periods in the same house. Each treatment had 4 replicates with 12 chicks in each treatment. Weight gain and feed intake were higher ($P{\le}0.05$) in the control groups. Feed conversions' were better ($P{\le}0.05$) in the PCS group, 3.0% PCS and 20 mesh size of PCS than the control group from 21 to 49 days, and for the overall period. $NH_3$ and $H_2S$. gas production were decreased ($P{\le}0.05$) when zeolite was added in broiler feeds. 1.5% or 3.0% PCS in broiler feed was better ($P{\le}0.05$) than the 4% PCS. More than 90 mesh size PCS was better ($P{\le}0.05$) in controlling $CO_2$ production in the 5th period than the 20 or 50 mesh size or control groups. The control and PCS groups produced more flies ($P{\le}0.05$) than zeolite group during the 2nd and 3rd weeks. The 3.0% or 4.5% PCS or 50 or 90 mesh size of PCS in broiler feed produced more flies than the 20 mesh size or control groups although 50 or 90 mesh size of PCS during 5th week tended to have lower fly production than the 20 mesh size of PCS and control group.

  • A field-scale study was conducted to evaluate the effect of organic matter amendments on the solubility of arsenic (As) in paddy soil and uptake by rice. Six organic matter (rice bran, rice straw, pig/cattle/fowls manure compost and swine liquid manure) were added to two polluted soils with high As (53 mg kg-1) and low As concentration (28 mg kg-1), and changes in soil solution constituents was monitored. The mean As concentrations in soil solution from the high As soil with rice bran, pig manure compost and swine liquid manure addition were significantly higher (0.61-1.15 mg L-1) than that of the control (0.42-0.66 mg L-1). Regression between As and Fe in soil solution indicated that As was attributable to reductive dissolution of Fe (hydr)oxides and it was driven by organic matter addition. Mean As concentrations in brown rice from the high As soil were 0.35-0.46 mg kg-1, above the maximum safety level of inorganic As (0.35 mg kg-1), and tended to be higher in organic matter amended soils than that of the control. The significant correlation between grain As and soil solution As was not observed and it was probably attributable to As tolerance of rice causing the reduction of As uptake and/or translocation to grain. However, considering the significant As release in soil solution from the high As soil and the tendency of grain As elevation after organic matter addition, it is needed to be cautious for food safety when amending organic matter to paddy soil with high As concentration.
