  • The Chuwang valley-Kumunkwangi valley forest in Chuwangsan area was studied to investigate forest structure in relation to altitude and part of slope. Forty eight quadrats were set up in the valley forest along altitude of 470m to 780m and part of the slope. Density and basal area of trees in tree strata decreased as increasing elevation. With increasing elevation the importance values of Quercus mongolica, Fraxinus rhynchophylla increased, while those of Pinus densiflora, Lindera obtussiloba decreased. As going from lower part to upper part of the slope, the importance values of Quercus valiabilis and Lindera obtussiloba increased while those of Fraxius rhynchophylla, Acer mono decreased. Species diversity tended to decreased as going to upper parts of the slope. The range of similarity indices between elevation belts, and parts of the slope were 74.4~84.2% and 68.0~96.3%, respectively. According to importance value and cluster analysis, the studied valley forest was classified into three forest communities of Pinus densiflora-deciduous tree species community of lower part of slope, Pinus densiflora-Quercus variabilis community of middle and upper part of slope, Pinus densiflora community of the top area.

  • A valley forest in Sangbuun area at Jirisan National Park was studied to investigate forest structure in relation to altitude and part of the slope. Forty-eight quadrats were set up in the valley forest along altitude of 726m to 1,090m and part of the slope, and vegetation analysis for the woody species in the tree and subtree layers were carried out. With increasing elevation belt, mean DBH, height and basal area of the trees in the tree layer increased while their density decreased. This trends may be caused by the disturbance which was relatively severe in the low elevation area. As elevation increased, the importance percentages of Fraxinus rhynchophylla, Quercus variabilis and Quercus mongolica increased while those of Styyax japonicus, Carpinus laxiflora and Pinus densiflora decreased. The importance percentages of Quercus variabilis and Pinus densiflora increased as going from lower part to upper part of the slope. However, the opposite trend was found for the importance percentages of Acer mono and Corlus heterophylla var. thunbergii. Number of species and species diversity decreased as increasing elevation and going from lower part to upper part of the slope. According to importance percentage and cluster analysis, the valley forest was classified into three forest communities of Quercus serrata-broad-leaved tree species community in lower part of the slope at low elevation belt, middle elevation belt and middle and upper parts of the slope at high elevation belt, Pinus dnsiflora-Quercus serrata community in middle and upper parts at low elevation belt, and Quercus mongolica-broad-leaved tree species community in lower part of the slope at high elevation belt and top area.

  • In this study, we have selected Larix kaempferi as a study area in Woraksan National Park for understanding the ion index according to the difference of topography in national parks. We measured the weather and ion at two fixed points, ridge and valley, where the Larix kaempferi dominates in the same ecological structure in Woraksan National Park. The weather measurement results showed the average, maximum, and minimum temperatures of $28.22^{\circ}C$, $29.9^{\circ}C$, and $26.4^{\circ}C$, respectively at the ridge. The average, maximum, and minimum temperatures at the valley were $27.08^{\circ}C$, $27.8^{\circ}C$, and $25.5^{\circ}C$, respectively. The average, maximum, and minimum relatively humidities at the ridge were 67.02%, 75.25%, and 61.95%, respectively. he average, maximum, and minimum relatively humidities at the valley were 69.74%, 76.8%, and 63.75%, respectively. The average, maximum, and minimum amounts of positive ions generated in the ridge was $698.40{\pm}59.80ea/cm^3$, $885.88ea/cm^3$, and $597.88ea/cm^3$, respectively. The average, maximum, and minimum amounts of negative ions generated in the ridge were $736.07{\pm}83.89ea/cm^3$, $934.53ea/cm^3$, and $599.32ea/cm^3$, respectively. The ion index is calculated to be 1.06. The average, maximum, and minimum amounts of positive ions generated in the valley were $1,732.49{\pm}354.08ea/cm^3$, $2,652.10ea/cm^3$, and $1,110.92ea/cm^3$, respectively. The average, maximum, and minimum amounts of negative ions generated in the valley were $1,990.47{\pm}433.57ea/cm^3$, $3,126.75ea/cm^3$, and the minimum value was $1,352.17ea/cm^3$. The ion index is calculated to be 1.16. The difference in the amount of negative ions generated in ridge and valley was $1089.26ea/cm^3$, and the difference of the calculated ion index between the ridge portion and the valley portion was 0.10. The results of this study were provided as the reference weather data of national parks for health management.

  • This study was conducted to provide data for the maintenance of the Corylopsis coreana community within the Hallyeohaesang National Park. Survey site of Corylopsis coreana community was located at a valley, which composed of over 60% exposed rock. As this result, much of the species was damaged or washed away due to the water flow from rainfall. The tree layers dominant species were Quercus serrata and Pinus densiflora. while the subtree layers dominant species were Corylopsis coreana, Acer pseudosieboldianum, Sapium japonicum, Chamaecyparis obtusa and Cornus kousa etc. The shrub layers dominant species were Callicarpa japonica and Smilax china etc., and herbaceous layers dominant species were Disporum smilacinum etc. Increased precipitation and rainfall days were observed from May to September in this valley during 2008~2010, which likely increased soil erosion and damage. Because water flow pattern was dispersed the Corylopsis coreana seed and the soil floor was shallow, and population of Corylopsis coreana seedlings were diminished.

  • This study was conducted to investigate avifauna and user's effect on the avifauna in Bukhan Mountain district of Bukhan Mountain National Park. Avifauna were investigated bimonthly from April to October 1987 over four districts which were main trail and sub-trail in each valley and ridge-midslope region by line transect methods. The observed birds in Bukhan Mountain districts was 34 species and 753 individuals and these consist of 19 species for residents. 11 species for summer visitor. 2 species for passage migrant and 2 species for winter visitor. The dominant species were Parus major (22.7%), Paradoxornis webbina(10%), Parus palustris (10.8%), Pica pica (10.0%) in order. No. of species and species diversities was higher in valley region than in ridge-midslope region. No. of species, individuals and species diversities were lower in main trail of high user's density than in sub-trail. Especially avifauna in main trail was severely decreased in August in valley region in which users were concentrated. But there was no change in similarity indices according to user's intensities. Therefore avifauna protection policy such as restoration and rehabilitation of edge species along trail, user's control in valley region during breeding periods, etc., shall be made for Bukhan Mountain National Park.
