  • Principal component analysis is a popular statistical method to reduce the dimension of the high dimensional climate data and to extract meaningful climate patterns. Based on the principal component analysis, we can further apply a regression approach for the linear prediction of future climate, termed as principal component regression (PCR). In this paper, we develop a new PCR method based on the regularized principal component analysis for spatial data proposed by Wang and Huang (2016) to account spatial feature of the climate data. We apply the proposed method to temperature prediction in the East Asia region and compare the result with conventional PCR results.

  • The characteristics and vertical structure of the rainfall are examined in terms of rain types using TRMM (Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission) PR (Precipitation Radar) data during the JJA period of 2002-2006 over three different regions; midlatitude region around the Korean Peninsula (EA1), subtropical East Asia (EA2), and tropical East Asia (EA3). The convective rain fraction in the EA1 region is 12.2%, which is smaller by 6% than those in the EA2 and EA3 regions. EA1 shows less frequent convective rain events, which are about 0.5 times as many as those in EA3. EA1 produces the mean convective rain rate of 10.4 mm/h that is about 40% larger than EA2 and EA3 while all regions have similar mean stratiform rain rate. The relationships between storm height and rain rate indicate that the rain rate is proportional to the storm height. Based on the vertical structure of radar reflectivity, EA1 produces deeper and stronger convective clouds with higher rain rate compared to the other regions. In EA3, radar reflectivity increases distinctly toward the land surface at altitude below 5 km, indicating more dominant coalescence-collision processes than the other regions. Furthermore, the bright band of stratiform rain clouds in EA3 is very distinct. In convective rain clouds, the first EOFs of radar reflectivity profiles are similar among the three regions, while the second EOFs are slightly different. The larger variability exists at upper layers for EA1 while it exits at lower levels for EA3.

  • We have used a nonlinear quasi-geostrophic model to study effects of lateral friction and bottom topography on the motion of warm eddies. The two empirical orthogonal functions of the stream function, accounting for the vertical structure, represent the barotropic and first baroclinic dynamic modes. This model is integrated 360 days on a 1000 km ${\times}$ 1000 km domain with a resolution of 10 km ${\times}$ 10 km including both the thermocline and idealized topography of the East Sea. Prescribed inflow through the Korea Strait is compensated by outflow through the Tsugaru Strait. The balance between the nonlinear advection term and the planetary ${\beta}$-effect tends to make northward movement of warm eddy over a flat bottom. The motion of a warm eddy over a sloping topography can be dominated by the nonlinear advection, while nonlinearity plays a secondary role over a flat topography. For eddies dispersing over topography, the nonlinear tendency is a function of time. For a strong warm eddy, northward propagation can occur. For intermediate strength of eddies one might expect a balance between the nonlinear term and the topographic ${\beta}$-effect. As nonlinearity decreases with eddy dispersion, southward motion along the slope may occur by such as a topographic Rossby wave. Our numerical simulations have confirmed the importance of lateral friction on eddy motions, in such a way that the northward penetration of the warm eddy increases drastically by the decrease of the lateral friction. The northward motion of warm eddy can be prevented by reducing the Reynolds number sufficiently. We have also demonstrated the crucial role of topographic effects in the eddy motion process.

  • Intraseasonal variability of the tropical convection over the Indian/western Pacific is studied using the Geostationary Meteorological Satellite high cloud amount. This study is directed to find the tropical-extratropical interaction in the frequency range of intraseasonal and interannual variabilities of the summer monsoon occured over the domain of 90E-171W and 495-50N. Especially, in order to investigate the intraseasonal interaction of last Asia summer monsoon associated with the tropical convections in the high cloud amounts, the spatial and time structure of the intraseasonal oscillation for the movement-and the evolution of the large-scale connections are studied. To describe the spatial and the time evolution, the extended empirical orthogonal function analysis is applied. The first mode may be considered to a normal structure, indicating that the strong convection band over 90E-120E is extended to sastward but this mode was detected as the intraseasonal variability during summer monsoon. It is found that the dominant intraseasonal mode of the tropical convection consists of the spatial changes over a broad period range centered around 40~50days.

  • This study aims to classify climate zones using Empirical Orthogonal Function and clustering analyses considering both air temperature and rainfall features in South Korea. When examining climatic characteristics of air temperature and rainfall by seasons, the distribution of air temperature is affected by topography and latitude for all seasons in South Korea. The distribution of rainfall demonstrated that the Yeongdong area, the southern coastal area and Jeju island have higher rainfall while the central area in Gyeongsangbuk-do is the least rainfall area. Clustering analyses of average linkage method and Ward's method was carried out using input variables derived from principal component scores calculated through Empirical Orthogonal Function analysis for air temperature and rainfall. Ward's method showed the best result of classification of climate zones. It was well reflected effects of topography, latitude, sea, the movement of surface pressure systems, and an administrative district.

  • The variability of vegetation is strongly related to the variability of hydrometeorological factors such as precipitation, temperature, runoff and so on. Analysis of the variability of vegetation will aid to understand the regional impact of climate change. Thus we analyzed the spatial-temporal variability of NOAA(National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration)/AVHRR(Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer) NDVI(Normalized Difference Vegetation Index). In the results from Mann-Kendall test, there is no significant linear trend of annual NDVI from 1982 to 2006 in the most area except the downward trend on the significance level 90% in the Guem-river basin area. In addition, using EOF(Empirical Orthogonal Function) analysis, the variability of NDVI in the region of higher latitude and altitude is higher than that in the other region since the spatial variability of NDVI follows the latitudinal gradient. Also we could get higher NDVI in June, July, August and September. We had the highest NDVI in Han-river basin area and the lowest in Je-Ju island.

  • A super ensemble model was developed for the seasonal prediction of regional precipitation in Korea using the lag correlated large scale predictors, based on the empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis and multiple linear regression model. The predictability of this model was also evaluated by cross-validation. Correlation between the predicted and the observed value obtained from the super ensemble model showed 0.73 in spring, 0.61 in summer, 0.69 in autumn and 0.75 in winter. The predictability of categorical forecasting was also evaluated based on the three classes such as above normal, near normal and below normal that are clearly defined in terms of a priori specified by threshold values. Categorical forecasting by the super ensemble model has a hit rate with a range from 0.42 to 0.74 in seasonal precipitation.

  • Intercomparisons between four kinds of data have been done to estimate the accuracy of satellite observations and model reanalysis for middle and lower tropospheric thermal state over regional oceans. The data include the Microwave Sounding Units (MSU) Channel 2 (Ch2) brightness temperatures of NOAA satellites and the vertically weighted corresponding temperature of ECMWF GCM (1980-93). The satellite data for midtropospheric temperatures are MSU2 (1980-98) in nadir direction and SC2 (1980-97) in multiple scans, and for lower tropospheric temperature SC2R (1980-97). MSU2 was derived in this study while SC2 and SC2R were described in Spencer and Christy (1992a, 1992b). Temporal correlations between the above data were high (r${\ge}$0.90) in the middle and high latitudes, but low(r${\sim}$0.65) over the low latitude and more convective regions. Their values with SC2R which included the noises due to hydrometeors and surface emission were conspicuously low. The reanalysis shows higher correlation with SC2 than with MSU2 partially because of the hydrometeors screening. SC2R in monthly climatological anomalies was more sensitive to surface thermal condition in northern hemisphere than MSU2 or SC2. The first EOF mode for the monthly mean data of MSU and ECMWF shows annual cycle over most regions except the tropics. The mode in MSU2 over the Pacific suggests the east-west dipole due to the Walker circulation, but this tendency is not clear in other data. In the first and second modes for the Ch2 anomalies over most regions, the MSU and ECMWF data commonly indicate interannual variability due to El Ni${\tilde{n}$o and La Ni${\tilde{n}$a. The substantial disagreement between observations and model reanalysis occurs over the equatorial upwelling region of the western Pacific, suggesting uncertainties in the model parameterization of atmosphere-ocean interaction.

  • The effects of the coal-fired power plant emissions, as the biggest point source of air pollutants, on spatiotemporal surface air pollution over the remote area are investigated in this study, based on a set of date selection and statistical technique to consider meteorological and geographical effects in the emission-concentration (source-receptor) relationship. We here proposed the sophisticated technique of data processing to separate and quantify the effects. The data technique comprises a set of data selection and statistical analysis procedure that include data selection criteria depending on meteorological conditions and statistical methods such as Kolmogorov-Zurbenko filter (K-Z filter) and empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis. The data selection procedure is important for filtering measurement data to consider the meteorological and geographical effects on the emission-concentration relationship. Together with meteorological data from the new high resolution ECMWF reanalysis 5 (ERA5) and the Korea Meteorological Administration automated surface observing system, air pollutant emission data from the telemonitoring system (TMS) of Dangjin and Taean power plants as well as spatio-temporal air pollutant concentrations from the air quality monitoring system are used for 4 years period of 2014-2017. Since all the data used in this study have the temporal resolution of 1 hour, the first EOF mode of spatio-temporal changes in air pollutant concentrations over the Seoul metropolitan area (SMA) due to power plant emission have been analyzed to explain over 97% of total variability under favorable meteorological conditions. It is concluded that SO2, NO2, and PM10 concentrations over the SMA would be decreased by 0.468, 1.050 ppb, and 2.045 ㎍ m-3 respectively if SO2, NO2, and TSP emissions from Dangjin power plant were reduced by 10%. In the same way, the 10% emission reduction in Taean power plant emissions would cause SO2, NO2, and PM10 decreased by 0.284, 0.842 ppb, and 1.230 ㎍ m-3 over the SMA respectively. Emissions from Dangjin power plant affect air pollution over the SMA in higher amount, but with lower R value, than those of Taean under the same meteorological condition.

  • The characteristics of the Asian summer monsoon have been investigated for the periods of 1993/1994, the contrasting years in a view of the summer monsoon precipitation. In order to investigate the monsoon features over the eastern Asian monsoon region, the cloudiness(using the extensive data derived by the geostationary meteorological satellite), the condition of underlying surface including sea-surface temperature, and the summer rainfall are analyzed and some comparisons with 1993 and 1994 are also made and the characteristic differences are discussed. An analysis of the 2-degree latitude-longitude gridded 5-day mean high cloud amount data shows the detailed movement and persistence of the convective activities. In order to describe the spatial and temporal structures of the intraseasonal oscillation for the movement and evolution of the monsoon cloud, the extended empirical orthogonal fnction analysis with the twenty-day window size is used for the each year. Also, in order to find out the periodicity of the equatorial convective cluster, Fourier harmonic analysis is applied to the each year. The most prevailing intraseasonal oscillations of high cloud amount are 61 day mode and 15day mode in the equatorial and the subtropical oceans. However it was found that the most prevailing modes over the equatorial western Pacific and Indian Ocean were different for each year, hence raising the possibillity that the contrasting monsoon presipitation may be more fundamentally related to the interaction of intraseasonal oscillations and seasonal variation of convective activities over the lower latitude ocean.
