  • This study examines the relationship between intergenerational financial resource transfers and preparation for later life among the middle-aged. The study sample consists of 1536 middle-aged individuals with at least one living parent and one married child. The level of preparation for later life is dependent upon the level of household economic status. The statistically significant variables predicting the level of preparation for later life include age, education, subjective health status, household income and household assets. Moreover, intergenerational resource transfers are statistically significant factors that explain the level of preparation for later life. The effect of financial transfers from middle-aged parents to their adult children on the level of preparation for later life is the most significant financial transfer variable.

  • This study examines the condition of transfers between mothers and adult children, analyzing the influencing factors in such transfers. Specifically the study examines the influence of financial transfers and economic resources on financial transfers and grandchild caregiving between mothers and adult children. The sample of 3719 mothers with adult children was extracted from the first wave of the Korean Longitudinal Survey of Women and Families. The major findings are as follows. Mothers's socio-demographic characteristics are important factors in explaining financial transfers between mothers and adult children. Mothers who have jobs and spouses are more likely to provide economic resource to their adult children than those who don't have. In terms of receiving economic resources from adult children, statistically meaningful factors are mothers' age, labor market participation, marital status, household income, household asset, and children's labor market participation. Especially, labor market participation of mothers and adult children is statistically powerful factor in financial transfers and caregiving.

  • We examined if intergenerational proximity might be associated with upstream financial transfer from adult children to older parents, and whether adult child gender might moderate the association. We considered siblings' proximity to parents, as well as that of the adult child. Prior work conducted in the US and other countries has suggested that children living further from parents might provide financial support to compensate for instrumental support provided more by siblings living closer to parents. Data were drawn from the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing (2014). Our analytic sample consisted of older adults 60+ and their children aged 35 and 55. None of the children co-resided with parents. Parental households consisted of either widowed individuals or married couples. For within-family analyses, fixed effects and random effects regression models were estimated. Results suggest first, sons living within a 30-minute distance, or within an hour to two-hour distance provided more monetary support to married parents compared to daughters. Second, contrary to existing findings, greater financial assistance was provided by sons and daughters when no children lived within an hour distance from their parents. For widowed parents living alone, intergenerational proximity was not associated with the amount of financial transfer from adult children.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the influences on resource transfers between middle-aged parents and their married children. This study used 2009 data from the National Research Foundation of Korea regarding inter-generational resource transfers and preparation for later life (kfr-2009-c00010). A sample of 1208 households of middle-aged parents with married children was used. The study found that parents provided financial resource transfers to their married children in the following circumstances: where parents received financial resource transfers from their married children, where the household income of parents was high, where the children were younger, and where the children were male. Parents provided instrumental resource transfers to their married children in the following circumstances: where parents received instrumental resource transfers from their married children, where the gender of children was female, where the children were employed, where married children had their own children who were either younger than a preschooler, and where household incomes of married children were high. Parents received financial resource transfers from their married children in these circumstances: where their emotional ties with their children was high, where the household income of the parents was low, where the household income of the married children was high, and where married children had preschoolers. The circumstances in which parents received instrumental resource transfers from their married children were where parents provided instrumental resource transfers and the household incomes of married children were high.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the influence of parent-to-child financial transfers, providing household chores, and inheritance on financial transfers and time transfers from adult children to their elderly parents with dementia. Analyzing data from the sample of 343 adult children of parents with dementia, this study finds a strong positive effect of prior parent-to-child financial transfers on child-to-parent financial transfers under controlling parent characteristics, respondent characteristics and sibling's transfers to their parents. The effects of providing household chores and inheritance on time transfers are also positively significant. The results of this study point out the importance of reciprocity in resource transfers between adult children and their parents with dementia.

  • This study examines whether reciprocity exists in intergenerational resource transfers from middle-aged children to elderly parents. Analyzing data from a sample of 1123 middle-aged adults, this study highlights the importance of reciprocity in the transfer of resources between middle-aged adults and their elderly parents. The possibility of an inheritance shows a very strong effect on care-giving to elderly parents. Furthermore, past financial transfers from parents to middle-aged children correlates strongly with financial transfers from middle-aged children to their elderly parents.

  • Variable renewable energy (VRE) such as solar and wind power is the main sources of achieving carbon net zero, but it undermines the stability of power supply due to high variability and uncertainty. Energy storage system (ESS) can not only reduce the curtailment of VRE by load shifting but also contribute to stable power system operation by providing ancillary services. This study analyzes how the allocation of ESS resources between load shifting and ancillary service can contribute to maximizing the efficiency of power supply in a situation where the problems caused by VRE are becoming more and more serious. A stochastic power system optimization model that can realistically simulate the variability and uncertainty of VRE was applied. The analysis time point was set to 2023 and 2036, and the optimal resource allocation strategy and benefits of ESS by varying VRE penetration levels were analyzed. The analysis results can be largely summarized into the following three. First, ESS provides excellent functions for both load shifting and ancillary service, and it was confirmed that the higher the reserve price, the more limited the load shifting and focused on providing reserve. Second, the curtailment of VRE can be a effective substitute for the required reserve, and the higher the reserve price level, the higher the curtailment of VRE and the lower the required amount of reserve. Third, if a reasonable reserve offer price reflecting the opportunity cost is applied, ESS can secure economic feasibility in the near future, and the higher the proportion of VRE, the greater the economic feasibility of ESS. This study suggests that cost-effective low-carbon transition in the power system is possible when the price signal is correctly designed so that power supply resources can be efficiently utilized.
