  • This study was performed to investigate the electromyographic(EMG) activity, firing time and sequence of the mandibular elevator muscle on gum chewing. For this study, 28 patients with temporomandibular disorders(TMD), especially internal derangement of TM joint, and 16 dental students without any signs and symptoms in the masticatory system were selected as the patients group and as the normal group, respectively. The patients group was composed of 14 right and 14 left side affected patients. For recording of EMG activity(${\mu}V$) of the anterior temporalis(TA) and the masseter muscle(MM), and measuring of firing time(millisecond) from the start of mandibular opening movement to the firing of the muscles, BioEMG, BioEGN, and Combo program integrated in the Biopak system(Bioresearch Inc., Milwaukee, USA) were used. Gum chewing stroke was performed in both right and left side for several times, and the first and the second chewing strokes were analysed and compared with regard to EMG activity, firing time, firing sequence, correlation between EMG activity and firing time. The data obtained were analysed by SPSS windows program and the results of this study were as follows : 1. In the patients group, chewing on the affected side showed higher EMG activities in the masseter of the side than those of the contralateral side, but chewing on the unaffected side showed higher EMG activity in the masseter and in the anterior temporalis of the side than those of the contralateral side. 2. There were no difference of firing time between both sides on chewing on the affected side, but firing time in the chewing side were earlier than that of contralateral side on chewing on the unaffected side in patients group. 3. In the normal group, EMG activities in the masseter and in the anterior temporalis in the chewing side were always higher than those of the contralateral side, and there were no difference of firing time between the two sides. 4. In general, firing sequence of four muscles of both sides were ipsilateral TA, ipsilateral MM, contralateral TA, and contralateral MM in earlier order of time in both groups. Correlation coefficients between EMG activity and firing time were negative value, and more significant correlation were appeared in the normal group than in the patients group.

  • In this study, some changes of soil characteristics in a field were analyzed to investigate the effect of heavy rainfall during rainy season. The heavy rainfalls were often induced geohazards like landslides. To do this, the reaching rainfall in the ground surface was investigated according to a condition of vegetation, and the change of soil characteristics induced by infiltrating rainfall was analyzed. The study site is a natural terrain located in Daedeok Science Complex. This site has same geology and soil condition whereas it has different vegetable condition. The rainfall records during the rainy season of 2006 and 2007 were selected. The rainfall records are based on the measuring date from Daejeon Regional Meteorological Administration adjacent to the study site. Also, the rainfall records according to the condition of vegetation were measured using rainfall measuring device made by ourselves. The soil tests were carried out about soil specimen sampled before and after rainfall, and then the change of soil characteristics related to rainfall and vegetation were analyzed. As the result, the density of vegetation was influenced by reaching rainfall quantity in the ground surface, and its influence intensity was decreased with rainfall intensity and rainfall duration. Also, it shows that degree of saturations, water contents, liquidities and shear resistances are directly influenced by heavy rainfalls.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of site-specific variable fertilization following digital fertility map generated from soil analysis on rice growth and yield. The site-specific application of fertilizer was implemented by using rice transplanter equipped with side dressing applicator and global positioning system (GPS). Coefficient of variation (C.V.) of soil nitrogen content was reduced after the experiment, and spatial variation of semivariogram was reduced. Rice growth from tillering to ripening stage, plant height, tiller and panicle number increased at site-specific variable fertilization treatment, and coefficient variation (C.V.) of each growth characteristics was lower than those of conventional fertilization treatment. As a result, fertility in the rice field was more uniform become of site-specific fertilizer application. Head rice yield of site-specific application plot increased by 9% (i.e., to from 450 kg/10a to 492 kg/10a of the control plot) and its CV was significantly reduced to 3.5 compared to 7.8 of the control plot. In addition, there was no significant difference in amylose, protein contents and whiteness of milled rice, but its CV was reduced.

  • Clubroot caused by Plasmodiophora brassicae is a widespread disease that causes serious problems in many brassica growing areas. To establish more simple and reliable clubroot screening method of Chinese cabbage to P. brassicae using soil-drenching inoculation, the development of clubroot on Chinese cabbage according to several conditions such as soil type, inoculum concentration of P. brassicae GN-1 (race 9), plant growth stage and incubation period was studied. In a commercial horticulture nursery media soil (CNS), disease severity of the seedling according to inoculum concentration increased in a dose-dependent manner, but did not in mixture of CNS and upland soil (1:1, v/v). To facilitate and acquire precise result of resistance screening of Chinese cabbage to clubroot, 10-day-old seedlings should be inoculated by drenching the spore suspension of P. brassicae to give inoculum density of $4.0{\times}10^8$ spores/pot. To develop the disease, the inoculated seedlings were incubated in a growth chamber at $20^{\circ}C$ for 3 days, and then cultivated in a greenhouse ($25{\pm}5^{\circ}C$) for five weeks. Under the optimum conditions, 25 clubroot-resistant (CR) and 3 clubroot-susceptible (CS) cultivars were tested for resistance to P. brassicae. All CR cultivars showed very clear resistance response, on the other hand all CS cultivars severly infected with the pathogen. The results suggest that this method is efficient screening method of Chinese cabbage for resistance to clubroot disease.

  • Experiments were carried out to make clear the relationships among some morphological characters of four-varieties of mulberry trees. Simple correlation coefficients and particial correlation coefficients were calcultated among the characters, namely branch length, branch diameter, leaf number per branch, leaf area per branch, node number per branch, total branch wt. branch weight except leaves and leaf weight per branch of the mulberry trees. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. Variances of the characters and covariances between the each characters are shown in table 1, and simple correlation coefficients among various characters are shown in table 2. It was observed that there were close relationships between yield (leaf weight) and branch length, branch diameter, leaf number per branch, leaf are per branch, node number per branch, total branch weight and branch weight except leaves, respectively. 2. Partial correlation coefficients among some characters are shown in table 3. From this table, it was also observed that leaf yield of mulberry trees and leaf area are more closely related more than leaf yield and the other characters of mulberry trees in four different varieties. From the experimental studies, it was recognized that the four characters, namely branch length, branch diameter, leaf number and leaf area, should be very useful characters in the estimation of mulberry leaf yield as they could be measured. or counted easily before harvest of mulberry leaves, and are affected more in mulberry 1eaf yields than the other characters.

  • Effects of the zeolite particle size on the soil chemical properties and on rice growth was investigated on the pot with the loamy sand (Sadu series) and silty clay loam(Paju series) soils. All the zeolite treatments brought the increase of unhulled grain yield on the both loamy sand and silty clay loam soils. Unhulled grain yield increased with increasing the amount of zeolite applied and with decreasing the amount of particle size of zeolite applied on both soils. Unhulled grain yield increased significantly by 11.1% (22.79g/head) with 2ton/10a of smaller than $106{\mu}m$ size zeolite on the loamy sand soil and on the silty clay loam soil, yield increased by 9.3% (24.98g/head) with 1.5ton/10a of smaller than $106{\mu}m$ size zeolite. CEC, pH and contents of exchangeable cations of the soil after experiment were raised by increasing the amount of zeolite and also by decreasing the particle size of zeolite at both soil. At the heading stage, the zeolite treatments improved the growth of rice plant compared to control. The nutrient contents(T-N, Ca, Mg, K, Na), except phosphorus, in the rice plant grown on the zeolite treated soils were higher than control plot.

  • An Epidemic disease is regarded as warm disease by Korean Medicine. Warm disease is highly contagious and shows an unfavorable condition, and that is characteristic of being widely prevalent. Warm disease study cope with this epidemic disease opportunely. In the Myeong[明] and Cheong[淸] Dynasty, warm disease study got into the region of Korean medicine of today and "The Sections of Warm Disease(溫病條辨)" contributed to the cause of the study was really great. "The Sections of Warm Disease" written by Ohguktong(吳鞠通) in the Cheong Dynasty are divided into the three sections of Upper burner[上焦], Middle burner[中焦] and Lower burner[下焦]. Ohguktong, dealing with the contents of Defense-aspect[衛分], Gi-aspect[氣分], Construction-aspect[營分], Blood-aspect[血分], and so forth in all "Sections of Warm Disease", made use of Seopcheonsa(葉天士)'s Defense Gi[衛氣], Construction, and Blood pattern identification with Triple burner[三焦] pattern identification and six channel pattern identification. And he, having a correct understanding of the nature of medicine, suggested in detail that the directions of medicine and described the processing according to method and the method to take medicine. To conclude, Ohguktong(吳鞠通) Tong in "The Sections of Warm Disease" not only formulated the system of the practical theory of warm disease but also solidified the foundation covering warm disease and its treatment as well, He established the new method of treatment and formula related to warm disease and made a definite distinction between cold damage[傷寒] and warm disease[溫病].

  • In this study we evaluated the hydrological applicability of multi-satellite precipitation estimates. Three high-resolution global multi-satellite precipitation products, the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Multi-satellite Precipitation Analysis (TMPA), the Global Satellite Mapping of Precipitation (GSMaP), and the Climate Precipitation Center (CPC) Morphing technique (CMORPH), were applied to the Coupled Routing and Excess Storage (CREST) model for the evaluation of their hydrological utility. The CREST model was calibrated from 2002 to 2005 and validated from 2006 to 2009 in the Chungju Dam watershed, including two years of warm-up periods (2002-2003 and 2006-2007). Areal-averaged precipitation time series of the multi-satellite data were compared with those of the ground records. The results indicate that the multi-satellite precipitation can reflect the seasonal variation of precipitation in the Chungju Dam watershed. However, TMPA overestimates the amount of annual and monthly precipitation while GSMaP and CMORPH underestimate the precipitation during the period from 2002 to 2009. These biases of multi-satellite precipitation products induce poor performances in hydrological simulation, although TMPA is better than both of GSMaP and CMORPH. Our results indicate that advanced rainfall algorithms may be required to improve its hydrological applicability in South Korea.

  • A new commercial strain "Gumbit" of golden oyster mushroom was developed by hyphal anastomosis. It was improved with hybridization between monokaryotic strain derived from ASI 2295 and ASI 2703. The optimum temperature of mycelial growth and fruiting body development were $25{\sim}30^{\circ}C$ and $19{\sim}24^{\circ}C$, respectively. The pileus was golden to brilliant yellow color. Commercial strain "Gumbit" was not as prolific as the more commonly cultivated Pleurotus ostreatus in the conversion of substrate mass to mushrooms. However, cultivator can save money for mushroom growing on high-temperature season as like summer in Korea. Since picking individual mushrooms is tedious and often damages the fragile fruiting bodies compared with other species of oyster mushrooms.

  • Pre- and post-emergent control of Aneilema keisak was investigated in no-till paddy fields. In addition, a pot trial was conducted to determine use rates of the experimental post-emergent herbicide LGC40863. For pre-emergent control, butachlor(1,800g ai/ha), pretilachlor(600g ai/ha), pretilachlor plus pyrazosulfuron(300+18g ai/ha, respectively), thiobencarb plus bensulfuron(2,100+51g ai/ha, respectively), and molinate plus pyrazosulfuron(1,500+21g ai/ha, repectively) were treated at 20 days before seeding. Among the herbicides, molinate plus pyrazosulfuron was the least effective (23% control), while all other herbicides provided excellent(>95%) control of A. keisak. None of these herbicides caused rice phytotoxicity. However, rice yield in the plot treated with molinate plus pyrazosulfuron decreased about 50% due to poor A. keisak control. LGC40863 controlled A. keisak completely, by foliar application, across wide growth stages from the 5- to 15-leaf at 50g ai/ha in pot tests. In the field, treatment of LGC40863(30 to 50g ai/ha) provided >95% control of A. keisak when treated either at 15 days after transplanting or at non-productive tillering stage. Efficacy of 2,4-D and bentazon was insufficient when treated at non-productive tillering stage. These results suggest that, in no-till paddy fields, A. keisak is controlled by pre-emergent application of butachlor, pretilachlor, pretilachlor plus pyrazosulfuron, or thiobencarb plus bensulfuron, and by post-emergent application of LGC40863.
