  • In this study, for the purpose of estimating the resisting moment of sloped ground based on level ground fall down safety equation in design specification, compute it depends on penetration depth of concrete pile applying modulus of foundation about the angle of internal friction, cohesion, unit weight of soil, classes of the ground, sandy or clay soil, and verify established study using L-Pile Plus13.8. Also, select four cases that characteristics of soil depending on the soil grade is considered and compute the 12m length concrete pile's resisting moment of the ground those angle is changing from $0^{\circ}{\sim}35^{\circ},\;step\;5^{\circ}$. In the result, identify that the resisting moment of ground decreases depending on ground slope. Thus, increasing of penetration depth is required.

  • A coastwise chemical tanker sailing at full speed has capsized during turning in calm water. In the previous paper, we investigated the reasons of the accident by demonstrating the proper correction for the free surface effect of the liquid cargo and the bow-sinkage effect. In this paper, we also carry out model experiments of a transverse pressure under the seawater and an outward heel moment according to the heel angle and rudder angle, on the basis of radius of turning circle, ship's speed and drift angle of model ship occurring in turning. It is also shown that the flooding of seawater onto the deck occurring in turning generated a significant outward heel moment and increased the vertical distance between the center of gravity of the ship and the center of lateral water drag.

  • Overturning of concrete poles are occurred annually due to natural disaster such as a typhoon. The present code for the resisting moment and the safety on overturning of concrete poles in inclined ground is inadequate. In this study, the concept of the code for those in flat ground is applied to calculate the resisting moment in inclined ground using general analysis program L-Pile Plus13.8. According to the analytical results, the resisting moment in inclined ground is rapidly decrease as increasing the slope angle although the embedded depth are added by the additional embedded depth on the code. It is revealed that the capacity in inclined ground is equivalent to that in flat ground if additional embedded depth is increased from 1.5 to 3 times.

  • Gait analysis has been conducted in various environments, but the biomechanics during the transition from uphill walking to downhill walking have not been reported. The purpose of this study is to investigate the knee and ankle joint kinematics and kinetics during walking on a triangle-shaped slope compared with those during level walking. Kinematic and kinetic data of eighteen participants were obtained using a force plate and motion capture system. The greater peak ankle dorsiflexion angle and moment and the peak knee extension moment were observed (p<0.05) during both uphill and downhill walking on the triangle-shaped slope. In summary, uphill walking on a triangle-shaped slope, which showed a peak knee flexion of more than $50^{\circ}$ with greater peak knee extension moment, could increase the risk of patellofemoral pain syndrome. Downhill walking on a triangle-shaped slope, which involved greater ankle dorsiflexion excursion and peak ankle dorsiflexion, could cause gastrocnemius muscle strain and Achilles tendon overuse injury.

  • The building design projects which are being proceeded nowadays pursue a complex and various shape of structures, escaping from the traditional and regular shape of buildings. In this new trend of the architecture, there rises a demand of the research in the structural engineering for the effective realization of such complex-shaped buildings which disassembles the orthogonality of frames. As a distinguished characteristics of the buildings in a complex-shape, there frequently are inclined columns included in the structural frame. The inclined column causes extra axial force and bending moment at the beam-column connection so it is necessary to assess those effects on the structural behavior of the frame and the connection by experiment or analysis. However, with comparing to the studies on the normal beam-column connections, the inclined column connections have not been studied sufficiently. Therefore, this study evaluated the beam-column connections having an inclined column using nonlinear and finite element analysis method. In this paper, steel moment frames having inclined columns were analyzed by the nonlinear pushover analysis to check the global behavior and beam-column connection models were analyzed by the finite element analysis to check the buckling behavior and the fracture potentials.

  • A beam splice method using inclined end-plates and high-strength tension bolts was developed. The end-plates welded to a bracket and a spliced beam are connected each other by using the tension bolts. In the present study, six exterior beam-to-column moment connections were tested under cyclic loading. Test parameters were the end-plate details and bolt arrangements. All specimens were designed so that moment resistances of the end-plates and bolts were greater than the required moment at the beam splice, in accordance with the design methods of AISC Design Guide 4. Test results showed that in the beam splices with the extended end-plates, the beam moment successfully transferred to the bracket, without any defeats such as excessive prying action of the end plates and brittle failure at the end plate-to-beam flange weld joints. However, the deformation capacities of the overall beam-to-column connections were limited due to the brittle failure of the beam-to-column flange weld joints. From the test results, recommendations for seismic design and detailing of the beam-to-column moment connection with inclined end-plate beam splice were given.

  • A study for analysing the characteristics of the 'Tsunami Earthquake' and 'Tsunamigenic Earthquake' has been done in terms of stress drop and tectonic characteristics using previous studies on magnitude, moment, energy, and length of fault. The 'Tsunami Earthquake' seemed to occur mainly on the subduction environment with a very low stress drop of about 10 bars and a thrust dip angle comparing those of the 'Tsunamigenic Earthquake' or other earthquakes. Released energy to moment ratio of the 'Tsunami Earthquake' also seemed to be lower. Earthquakes which generated tsunami in the East Sea seemed to be 'Tsunamigenic Earthquake' with a stress drop of about 30${\sim}$50 bars, and an average energy to moment ratio. Hence, stress drop, energy to moment ratio, and thrust dip angle seem to be indicators of earthquakes that produce tsunamis.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the behavior of a single batter pile with repeated lateral loading through model tests. Repeated loads were applied in one direction and two directions, and lateral resistance and bending moment were analyzed by varying the relative density of the ground. As a result, lateral resistance and maximum bending moment were increased in the order of Out batter, Plumb, and In batter when one-way and two-way dynamic lateral loads were applied. The depth at the maximum bending moment was more deeper with the loading. The moments at bottom layer were decreased in the order of Out batter, Plumb, and In batter but upper moments were increased with the same order. Also, various bottom and upper moments were small when the two-way dynamic lateral load was applied compared to one-way lateral load.
