  • The recovery of metals from printed circuit board(PCBs) scraps was investigated by utilizing a shape sorting method. After all electronic parts mounted on the board were removed. PCBs were pulverized to particles smaller than 1 mm by aswing hammer type impact mill in order to liberate metal components. Metals were separated from nonmetalliccomponents by an inclined vibrating plate (IVP). The metal separation efficiency was measured as a function of vihrationintensity and inclined angle. The maximum efficiency was obtained when IVP was operated at the vibration intensity(Kv)of 1.40 and the inclined angle of 10". The grade of the metal components was recovered from PCBs exceeding 90% byusing IVP.0% by using IVP.

  • A theoretical method is presented to investigate the thermoelastic and dynamic response of functionally graded material (FGM) rectangular plates made up of metal and ceramic. The temperature is assumed to be constant in the plane of the plate and to vary in the thickness direction only. Material properties are assumed to be temperature-dependant, and vary continuously through the thickness according to a power law distribution in terms of the volume fraction of the constituents. The third order shear deformation theory (TSDT) to account for rotary inertia and transverse shear strains is adopted to formulate the theoretical model. The modal analysis technique is used to develop the analytic solutions of the dynamic problem. The effect of material compositions and temperature fields is examined. The present theoretical results are verified by comparing with those from finite element analysis by ANSYS.

  • Optimal design of functionally graded plates is investigated considering stress and critical temperature. Material properties are assumed to be temperature dependent and varied continuously in the thickness direction. The effective material properties are obtained by applying linear rule of mixtures. The 3-D finite element model is adopted using an 18-node solid element to analyze more accurately the variation of material properties and temperature field in the thickness direction. For stress analysis, the tensile stress ratio and compressive stress ratio of the structure under mechanical load are investigated. In the thermo-mechanical buckling analysis, temperature at each node is obtained by solving the steady-state heat transfer problem and Newton-Raphson method is used for material nonlinear analysis. Finally, the optimal design of FGM plates is studied for stress reduction and improving thermo-mechanical buckling behavior, simultaneously.

  • A study on the grinding characteristics of metal components in printed circuit boards (PCBs) scrap by a swing-hammer typeimpact mill was conducted. The PCBs scrap crushed to sizes less than 3 mm were pulverized to liberate metal components by the impact mill. The effect of rotation speed of hammer on the grinding characteristics was investigated. The particle size distribution and degree of liberation of metals such as copper and solder were measured. The effect of rotation speed and particle size on the shape sorting of metal Particles from milled PCBs was investigated using an inclined vibrating Plate. At the hammer speed of 61.3 m/s about 80% of the copper particles became larger than 297 $\mu$m while 90% of solder particles was smaller than 297 $\mu$m. In the shape sorting method, the recovery location becomes shorter as the rotation speed of hammer increases. The recovery location for particles larger than 297$\mu$m was shorter than for particles sized between 149$\mu$m and 297$\mu$m. As the recovery location becomes shorter, KI value increases towards unity while $\phi_{c}$ value decreases towards unity indicating the more roundness of metal particles.

  • Thermal postbuckling and vibration analyses of functionally graded plates (FG plates) are performed. The nonlinear finite element equation based on the first-order shear deformation plate theory is formulated for the FG plate. The von Karman strain-displacement relation is used to account for the thermal large deflection. The incremental method considering the effect of the initial deflection and the initial stress is adopted for temperature-dependent material properties of functionally graded materials. The numerical result shows characteristics of the thermal postbuckling and vibration of FG plates in the pre- and post- buckled regions.

  • The shear behavior of four different interfaces consisting of four types of geosynthetics was investigated, and both static and dynamic test for the geosynthetic interfaces were conducted. The monotonic shear experiments were performed by using an inclined board apparatus and large direct shear device. The interface shear strength obtained from the inclined board test was compared with calculated values from large direct shear tests. The comparison results indicated that direct shear tests show high possibility to over-predict the shear strength in the low normal stress range where direct shear tests are not performed. Curved failure envelopes were also obtained for interface cases where two static shear tests were conducted. By comparing the friction angles measured from three tests, i.e. direct shear, inclined board, and shaking table test, it was found that the friction angle might be different depending on the test method and normal stresses applied in the research. Therefore, it was concluded that the testing method should be determined carefully by considering the type of loads and the normal stress expected in the field with using the geosynthetic materials installed in the site.

  • How to estimate the shape of trawl net and ropes of a midwater trawl on full scale was described by implementing a three-dimensional semi-analytic treatment of a towing cable system with the field experiments obtained with the Scanmar system. The shape of trawl net from wingend to the beginning of codend was assumed to be of form $\chi$$^2$/ae$^2$+ y$^2$/be$^2$=(z - c)$^2$/c$^2$, and that of the ropes attached behind otter boards be of form yr = $A\chi$rB. In case of warp length 300m long, the volume of trawl net, the ratio of net height to net width at the mouth of the trawl net, and the inclination angle of float rope were estimated according to the change of towing speed. The volume and the distance between wingtips were increased with increasing towing speed. And the inclination angle of float (or ground) rope was slightly decreased with increasing towing speed.

  • In the glulam beam deflection it is necessary to check the reliability of theory formula, because of wood anisotropy and wood qualities (knot, slop of grain). In this experiment, when bending stress occurred on glulam, practice deflection of glulam measuring with AICON DPA-Pro 3D system were compared with prediction deflection calculated as substituting MOE through non-destructive testing and static MOE through bending test in differential equation of deflection curve. MOE using ultrasonic wave tester of laminae, MOE using natural frequencies of longitudinal vibrations ($E_{cu}$, $E_{cf}$), MOE using ultrasonic wave tester of glulam ($E_{gu}$) and MOE using natural frequencies of longitudinal vibrations ($E_{gf}$) were substituted in this experiment. When practice deflection measured by 3D system was compared with prediction deflection calculated with differential equation of deflection curve, within proportional limit the ratio of practice deflection and prediction deflection was similar as 1.12 and 1.14, respectively. Deflection using ultrasonic wave tester was 0.89 and 0.95, Deflection using natural frequencies of longitudinal vibrations was 1.07 and 1.10. The results showed that prediction deflection calculated by substituting using non-destructive MOE of glulam having anisotropy in differential equation of deflection curve was agreed well with practice deflection.

  • The focal mechanism of the Hongsung Earthquake (1978. Oct. 7, M$_L$=5.0, Latitude 36.62N, Longitude 1 26.67E) was evaulated using the polarity distribution of the P-Waveforms. Through the non-linear computer process, the compatibility of polarity distributions of the 9 P-Waveforms observed at teleseismic distances from the Hongsung Earthquake epicenter was investigated to those of the focal mechanism determined from the varying strike, dip and rake angles. The resultant values for the strike and dip angle of the principal fault plane, which apparently matches very well the sunface lineament of the Hongsung region, are determined to be about 247 degree and 78 degree with uncertainties, respectively. However, the rake angle of the focal mechanism has wide range of 40 degree to 160 degree, which is mainly due to the poor coverage of the azimuthal angle of the observed seismic stations. Due to the consistency of principal stress axes, the resultant focal mechanism could support the current stress regime of that region, which may be caused by subduction of the Pacific Plate under the Eurasia Plate along the Japan Trench. It also provides information of seismic source characteristics of the part of the Korean Peninsula for aseismic design criteria such as Site Specific Response Spectrum and Strong Ground Motion Time History for the nuclear power plants and related nuclear waste disposal facility sites.

  • In this study, Galerkin scheme and SU/PG scheme of Petrov-Galerkin family were applied to the shallow water equations and a finite element model for shallow water flow was developed. Numerical simulations were conducted in several flumes with convection-dominated flow condition. Flow simulation of channel with slender structure in the water course revealed that Galerkin and SU/PG schemes showed similar results under very low Fr number and Re number condition. However, when the Fr number increased up to 1.58, Galerkin scheme did not converge while SU/PG scheme produced stable solutions after 5 iterations by Newton-Raphson method. For the transcritical flow simulation in diverging channel, the present model predicted the hydraulic jump accurately in terms of the jump location, the depth slope, and the flow depth after jump, and the numerical results showed good agreements with the hydraulic experiments carried out by Khalifa(1980). In the oblique hydraulic jump simulation, in which convection-dominated supercritical flow (Fr=2.74) evolves, Galerkin scheme blew up just after the first iteration of the initial time step. However, SU/PG scheme captured the boundary of oblique hydraulic jump accurately without numerical oscillation. The maximum errors quantified with exact solutions were less than 0.2% in water depth and velocity calculations, and thereby SU/PG scheme predicted the oblique hydraulic jump phenomena more accurately compared with the previous studies (Levin et al., 2006; Ricchiuto et al., 2007).
