Many lubricated systems experience boundary lubrication condition during operation. However, the friction and wear characteristics of boundary lubrication are not clearly understood. In this work the factors which affect the friction and wear between boundary lubricated metallic surfaces are investigated. Experiments were performed using a pin-on-disk type tester with pure aluminum, pure copper, and SM45C steel as the disk material and steel, stainless steel and bearing ball as the ball. The experimental conditions were determined according to the Taguchi experimental method. From the experimental results, the major factors that influence the friction and wear characteristics of boundary lubrication could be identified.
Boundary lubrication condition arises in most lubricated systems, especially during motion reversals and start up phase of operation. In this work electric contact resistance variations with respect to sliding conditions under lubrication is investigated. The motivation was to improve the understanding of the contact condition in the boundary lubrication regime. It is shown that electrical contact resistance is sensitive to sliding speed and surface condition of the specimens. Also, phenomena such as run-in during the initial phase of sliding and lubricant pile up near the sliding pin could be observed. The results of this work will aid in better understanding of the metal to metal contact condition in lubricated systems.
Turbulence in journal bearing operation is examined and the thermal variability is studied for isothermal, convective and adiabatic conditions on the walls within some degree of journal misalignment. An efficient algorithm for the solution of the coupled turbulent Reynolds and energy equations is used to examine the effects of the various factors. The calculation data of turbulent analysis are compared with those of laminar analysis. Heat convection is found to play but a small role in determining friction and load. The friction distribution patterns through the journal bearing are now different with high values at the upstream region of the bearing due to the high speed and low temperature, and a sudden decrease past the pressure maximum.
Temperature rise due to viscous shear of the lubricating oil generates hydrodynamic pressure, even if the lubricating surfaces are parallel. This effect, known as the thermal wedge effect, varies significantly with film-temperature boundary conditions. The bearing conducts a part of the heat generated; hence, the oil temperature varies with the thermal conductivity of the bearing. In this study, we analyze the effect of thermal conductivity on the thermohydrodynamic (THD) lubrication of parallel slider bearings. We numerically analyze the continuity equation, Navier-Stokes equation, energy equation including the temperature-viscosity and temperature-density relations for lubricants, and the heat conduction equation for bearing by creating a 2D model of the micro-bearing using the commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code FLUENT. We then compare the variation in temperature, viscosity, and pressure distributions with the thermal conductivity. The results demonstrate that the thermal conductivity has a significant influence on THD lubrication characteristics of parallel slider bearings. The lower the thermal conductivity, the greater the pressure generation due to the thermal wedge effect resulting in a higher load-carrying capacity and smaller frictional force. The present results can function as the basic data for optimum bearing design; however, the applicability requires further studies on various operating conditions.
Surface texturing is widely applied to friction surfaces of various machine elements. Most of the theoretical studies have focused on isothermal (ISO) analyses which consider constant lubricant viscosity. However, there have been limited studies on the effect of oil temperature increase owing to viscous shear. Following the first part of the present study that investigated the effects of film-temperature boundary condition (FTBC) and groove number on the thermohydrodynamic (THD) lubrication characteristics of a surface-textured parallel thrust bearing with multiple rectangular grooves, this study focuses on the effect of groove depths. Current study numerically analyzes the continuity, Navier-Stokes, and energy equations with temperature-viscosity-density relations using a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software, FLUENT. The results of variation in temperature, velocity, and pressure distributions as well as load-carrying capacity (LCC) and friction force indicate that groove depth and FTBC significantly influence the temperature distribution and pressure generation. The LCC is maximum near the groove depth at which the vortex starts, smaller than the ISO result. For intense grooves, the LCC of THD may be larger than that from ISO. The frictional force decreases as the groove becomes deeper, and decreases more significantly in the case of THD. The study shows that groove depth significantly influences the THD lubrication characteristics of surface-textured parallel thrust bearings.
In this paper the ball-on-disk type sliding tests with boundary lubricated steels were carried out to verify the relation between surface profiles and wear as well as scuffing. Three kinds of surface roughness and asperity radius were produced on AISI 1045 steels using the different processes of grinding and polishing. Frictional forces and time to scuffing were measured. Also, the shape and amount of wear particles were analyzed to compare with original profiles. From the tests, it was confirmed that the size of wear particles are very related to original surface profile. The time to failures and wear amounts were sensitive to the surface spacing. The large surface spacing shows much longer sliding life and smaller wear amount than the others. Time to scuffing was increased with increasing surface profile spacing. The sire of wear particles was increased and the amount was decreased with increasing surface profile spacing. Wear volume and wear rate K were decreased with increasing surface profile spacing. And after sliding tests, surface cracks of inner parts of the wear track occurred scuffing were observed and compared the differences about each specimen having the different surface profile spacing.

As a basic study to clarify the scoring resistance in lubricated sliding contact, the temperature rise on frictional surface was analyzed by theoretical method and the effects of various factors on the temperature rise were examined. On the basic of the results obtained theoretically, the practical equations to calculate the maximum average temperature of the contact surface were proposed which are applicable to sliding contact. Then, the effects of sliding velocity and oil temperature on the seizure behavior, and the relation between seizure and temperature rise were investigated. The following conclusions are deduced : The maximum average temperature rise and the other bulk temperature. The former is affected by the size of heat supply region and the sliding velocity, the latter is affected by heat transfer coefficient. Without regard to the operating condition such as sliding velocity, oil temperature and operating time at each load-step, the maximum average temperature just before seizure is nearly constant except in the region of lower velocity. Consequently, the maximum average temperature of the contact surface in boundary lubrication is a useful criterion to predict the scoring of sliding contact.
The role of viscosity index improver's(Ⅶ) additives for modem engine lubrication is complex. Under the condition of atmosphere or low shear rate, the characteristics of Ⅶ added lubricant is verified and quoted frequently for mathematical model of lubricant behavior. However, recent research shows that added lubricant has the characteristics of shear thinning at high shear rate condition although it performs well enough over the whole range of working temperature. At high shear rate, they show significant decrease of apparent viscosity irrespective of temperature. Many experimental researches verify that Ⅶ added lubricant shows boundary film layer formation on the solid surface as well as shear thinning effect by its polymeric molecular characteristics. The intend of our research is to verify the effects of Ⅶ from the viewpoint of continuum mechanics, because conventional Reynolds'equation with only pressure-viscosity relation cannot fully predict the lubricant behavior under the Ⅶ added condition. In these aspects, Reynolds'equation of Newtonian fluid model lacks the reflection of real fluid behavior and there is no way to explain the non-linear characteristics of Ⅶ added lubricant. In this research, we mathematically modeled the Ⅶ added lubricant behaviors which are the characteristics of non-Newtonian fluid behavior at high shear rate and boundary film formation on the solid surface. The consideration of elastic deformation in the contact region is also included in our computation and finally the converged film pressure and the film thickness with elastic deformation are obtained. The results are compared with those of Newtonian fluid model.
Nanodiamond was dispersed in paraffin liquid oil to investigate the effects of nanodiamond at the marginally lubricated condition. Scuffing test and immediate loading sliding wear test were conducted using the fabricated nanodiamond oil. As a result, dispersion of nanodiamond in oil leads to increase in scuffing life, and nanodiamond contents affects the scuffing life. In case of immediate loading sliding wear test, the result was different according to hardness of specimen. If hardness of specimen was low, abrasion of nanodiamond occurred actively. If hardness of specimen was increased, however, nanodiamond can act as a spacer or rolling between contacting surfaces.
