In this study, the 1D apparent shear stress model for vegetated compound open-channel flows was suggested. To consider the effect of momentum exchange between main channel and floodplain, the eddy viscosity concept was used in the present model. The interfacial eddy viscosity in the interface of main channel and floodplain was determined from the 3D Reynolds stress model. The evaluated interfacial eddy viscosity appears to be good agreement with those proposed previously. To investigate the effect of interfacial eddy viscosity, sensitive analysis was carried out. the computed backwater profiles are nearly identical with respect to the value of the interfacial eddy viscosity. However, the discharge conveyed by the floodplain changes is proportional to the interfacial eddy viscosity. Finally, the changes of the interfacial eddy viscosity due to the vegetation density and vegetation height were examined. The computed results of interfacial eddy viscosity are in proportion to the vegetation density and vegetation height, and the interfacial eddy viscosity has a range of $(2-5)\;{\times}\;10^{-4}$.

The critical condition for onset of Benard convection with variable viscosity .nu.=.nu.$_{0}$exp(-CT) has been obtained using a linear stability theory. The bottom wall is rigid while the upper surface may be either free or rigid. The two boundaries are subject to convective heat transfer. The critical Rayleigh numbers are presented up to maximum viscosity ratio of 3000. It is greater for smaller upper and/or lower surface Biot numbers. Its dependence on the viscosity ratio is complicated. However, a simple sublayer theory is found to be applicable for extremely large viscosity ratio. In such cases, the critical Rayleigh number and the critical wave number are functions of viscosity ratio and lower surface Biot number.r.

An analytical model of undertow is presented in the surf zone. Each term of the derived governing equation is evaluated by the ordering methods. Then the turbulent normal stresses and the streaming velocity terms are neglected. The driving force of undertow is derived from the wave profile which is approximated by the 4th order Chebyshev polynomials. The three types of vertical distribution of eddy viscosity are assumed and the coefficient of eddy viscosity is decided from the new boundary condition. So the input parameters for the calculation of undertow become very simple. The theoretical solutions of the present model are compared with the various experimental results. This model shows a good agreement with the experimental results in the case of mild slope and linear type eddy viscosity.

An analytical model of return flow is presented outside the surf zone. The governing equation is derived from the Navier-Stokes equation and the continuity. Each term of the governing equation is evaluated by the ordering analysis. Then the infinitesimal terms, i.e. the turbulent normal stress, the squared vertical velocity of water particle and the streaming velocity, are neglected. The driving forces of return flow are calculated using the linear wave theory for the shallow water approximation. Especially, the space derivative of local wave heights is described considering a shoaling coefficient. The vertical distribution of eddy viscosity is discussed to the customary types which are the constant, the linear function and the exponential function. Each coefficient of the eddy viscosities which sensitively affect the precision of solutions is uniquely decided from the additional boundary condition which the velocity becomes zero at the wave trough level. Also the boundary conditions at the bottom and the continuity relation are used in the integration of the governing equation. The theoretical solutions of present model are compared with the various experimental results. The solutions show a good agreement with the experimental results in the case of constant or exponential function type eddy viscosity.

Small amplitude in-phase oscillations of multi-cylinders are considered both numerically and experimentally. Flow field is separated into inner and outer regions. The basic unsteady solution is obtained analytically and the secondary flow, termed as steady streaming flow, can be obtained numerically by using Finite Volume Code with Panel Method. The Particle Induced Velocimetry, one of whole field measurements, is introduced for comparison with numerical flow visualization quantitatively. Among the algorithms for PIV, the Three Step Vector Searching Technique is applied to reduce CPU time. Small but non-zero damping coefficient, that is important in lightly damped system can be obtained with varying number of bodies and distances.
This study describes the application of a two dimensional depth integrated numerical model. The explict scheme of finite difference method had been applied to the model of circulation. The nonlinear terms showed a slight difference for the variations of water elevation when calculated grid was small. They were also found to be minor when calculated grid size was increased. For verification of the numerical model, numerical results were compared with predicted values and field data. In the model, the effect of nonlinear advective terms proved not to be significant.
Purpose: The consolidation settlement of soft ground is dependent on the distribution of pore water pressure which is also affected by hydraulic conductivities (boundary condition) of layers, thickness of clayey soil layer and surcharge. Results: However, the current consolidation analyses are mostly based on Terzaghi's consolidation theory that assumes the initial pore water pressure ratio with depth to be constant. In this study, numerical analysis are carried out to investigate the variation of pore water pressure dissipation with depth and thickness of clayey soil layer, time, surcharge as well as drainage conditions. Conclusion: Comparative study with Terzaghi's consolidation theory is also conducted. The result shows that Terzaghi's consolidation theory should be used with caution unless it is ideally corresponded to the isochrone.
The resonant column testing determines the shear modulus and material damping factor dependent on the shear strain magnitude, based on the wave-propagation theory. The determination of the dynamic soil properties requires the theoretical formulation of the dynamic behavior of the resonant column testing system. One of the theoretical formulations is the use of the wave equation for the soil specimen in the resonant column testing device. Wood, Richart and Hall derived the wave equation by assuming the linear elastic soil, and didn't take the material damping into consideration. Hardin incorporated the viscoelastic damping of soil in the wave equation, but he had to assume the material damping factor for the determination of the shear modulus. For the better theoretical formulation of the resonant column testing, this study derived a new wave equation to include the viscosity of soil, and proposed an approach for the solution. Also, in this study, the equation of motion for the testing system, which is another approach of the theoretical formulation of the resonant column testing, was also derived. The equation of motion leads to the better understanding of the resonant column testing, which includes the dynamic magnification factor and the phase angle of the response. For the verification of the proposed equation of motion for the resonant column testing, the finite element analysis was performed for the resonant column testing. The comparison of the dynamic magnification factors and the phase angles far the system response were performed.
In natural convection flows, the fluid velocities are highly dependent on the thermal field and property variations can have a strong effect on both the flow and thermal fields. To examine the effect of property variations, at first, numerical analyses covering wide range of the Prandtl number under the same Rayleigh numbers have been carried out. Next, we have modeled the viscosity and thermal conductivity as parabolic functions of temperature and a comprehensive set of numerical solutions have been obtained to understand the effect. The Prandtl number dependence of Nusselt number is fairly strong even though the effect is still weak compared to the Rayleigh number dependence. When thermophysical properties are dependent on temperature, the flow field showed a fairly weak variation except near boundaries, whereas the temperature field is strongly affected, especially by the temperature dependent thermal conductivity.
