  • This paper presents a feature extraction method for shape based retrieval of 3D models. Since the feature descriptor of 3D model should be invariant to translation, rotation and scaling, it is necessary to preprocess the 3D models to represent them in a canonical coordinate system. We use the PCA(Principal Component Analysis) method to preprocess the 3D models. Also, we apply that to make a MBR(Minimum Boundary Rectangle) and a circumsphere. The proposed algorithm is as follows. We generate a circumsphere around 3D models, where radius equals 1(r=1) and locate each model in the center of the circumsphere. We produce the concentric spheres with a different radius($r_i=i/n,\;i=1,2,{\ldots},n$). After looking for meshes intersected with the concentric spheres, we compute the curvature of the meshes. We use these curvatures as the model descriptor. Experimental results numerically show the performance improvement of proposed algorithm from min. 0.1 to max. 0.6 in comparison with conventional methods by ANMRR, although our method uses .relatively small bins. This paper uses $R{^*}-tree$ as the indexing.

  • We introduce an adaptive finite state vector quantization using a new side match distortion function. The conventional side match distortion function can make the gray level transition between the block bounddaries as smooth as possible and proper state codebooks in the flat areas where the spatial correlations are high. But it can't make proper codebooks in the edge areas where the spatial correlations are not high. The proposed distortion function adds the variances which represent the image characteristics to the conventional side match distortion function as weighted values. Then it can select better state codebooks than the conventional side match distortion function. Also if it predicts a wrong state, the proposed quantizer can correct the state. As a result, we can obtain the satisfiable image quality.

  • In the paper, we try to develop the methodology for updating road networks of large-scale digital maps by using construction drawing data. For the purpose, it is pre-requite step to merge road networks detached in CAD drawing data. As such, tie points are identified in neighboring drawings and used for solving the parameters of 2D conformal transformation between drawings. Then, the merged road network in CAD data is transformed to the coordinate system of digital maps. In the process, IPs in the drawings are considered as control information and 2D affine transformation is selected for coordinate transformation. Through the experiments with real dataset, we can identify that the developed method is valid and generally applicable.

  • Determination of type of a vehicle is being used in various areas such as collecting tolls, collecting statistical traffic data and traffic prognosis. Because most of the vehicle type classification systems depend on vehicle length indirectly or directly, highly reliable automatic vehicle length measurement system is crucial for them. This study makes use of a pencil beam laser rangemeter and devises a mechanical device which rotates the laser rangemeter. The implemented system measures the range between a point and the laser rangemeter then indicates it as a spherical coordinate. We obtain several silhouettes of cross section of the vehicle, the rate of change of the silhouettes, signs of the rates then squares the rates to apply cell averaging constant false alarm rate (CA-CFAR) technique to find out where the border is between the vehicle and the background. Using the border and trigonometry, we calculated the length of the vehicle and confirmed that the calculated vehicle length is about 94% of actual length.

  • When tracking a human face in the moving pictures with complex background under irregular lighting conditions, the detected face can be larger including background or smaller including only a part of the face. Even background can be detected as a face area. To solve these problems, this paper proposes a new face tracking method using a block difference image and a Kalman estimator. The block difference image allows us to detect even a small motion of a human and the face area is selected using the skin color inside the detected motion area. If the pixels with skin color inside the detected motion area, the boundary of the area is represented by a code sequence using the 8-neighbor window and the head area is detected analysing this code. The pixels in the head area is segmented by colors and the region most similar with the skin color is considered as a face area. The detected face area is represented by a rectangle including the area and its four vertices are used as the states of the Kalman estimator to trace the motion of the face area. It is proved by the experiments that the proposed method increases the accuracy of face detection and reduces the fare detection time significantly.

  • Although China's maritime militia has not been well known despite its long history, it is recently emerging as a serious threat to maritime security, causing neighboring countries' security concerns due to the growing number of maritime disputes with China. In this regard, it is now time to clearly define the true nature of the Chinese maritime militia. A close look at the organization and roles of the Chinese maritime militia reveals that it is an organization that is systematically managed and operated by the Chinese government and the People's Liberation Army of China. Its role is to serve the purpose of "contributing to the protection and expansion of China's marine interests." In addition, the threat factors of the Chinese maritime militia were analyzed by examining the cases of maritime disputes between the Chinese maritime militia and neighboring countries. First, the Chinese maritime militia has implemented the "Gray Zone Strategy." Second, it is a systematic organization supported by the Chinese government and the People's Liberation Army. Third, it is a maritime power that cannot be ignored as the world's largest militia organization. Fourth, it has a strategic flexibility that enables the execution of the dual mission of working for a living such as commercial fishing and serving in the maritime militia. The threats of the Chinese maritime militia are not limited to Southeast Asian countries located in the South China Sea. This is also the case in Korea as the country cannot avoid maritime disputes with China such as the Ieodo issue and the boundary delimitation of the West Sea. Accordingly, this study was focused on presenting a predictable scenario and countermeasures based on the analysis through a scenario technique with respect to the two cases that are most likely to occur in Korea-China relations. Finally, beyond identifying the nature of the Chinese maritime militia, this study takes a further step to share considerations as to how the organization may operate and develop in the future and how we can cope with its moves.

  • For quantitative evaluation of geotechnical engineering properties such as rippability and diggability, clear interpretation on the subsurface velocity structures should be preceded by figuring out top soil, weathered and soft rock layers, shape of basement, fracture zones, geologic boundary and etc. from the seismic refraction data. It is very important to set up suitable field parameters, which are the configuration of profile and its length, spacings of geophones and sources and topographic conditions, for increasing field data quality Geophone spacing of 3 to 5m is recommended in the land slope area for house land development and 5 to 10m in the tunnel site. In refraction tomography technique, the number of source points should be more than a half of available channel number of instrument, which can make topographic effect ignorable. Compared with core logging data, it is shown that the velocity range of the soil is less than 700m/s, weathered rock 700${\~}$1,200m/s, soft rock 1,200${\~}$1,800m/s. And the upper limit of P-wave velocity for rippability is estimated 1,200 to 1,800m/s in land slope area of gneiss. In case of tunnel site, it is recommended in tunnel design and construction to consider that tunnel is in contact with soft rock layer where three lineaments intersecting each other are recognized from the results of the other survey.

  • This study analyzes the tide deformation of land boundary regions on the east (Region A) and west (Region B) sides of the Ross Ice Shelf in Antarctica using Double-Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (DDInSAR). A total of seven Sentinel-1A SAR images acquired in 2015-2016 were used to estimate the accuracy of tide prediction model and Young's modulus of ice shelf. First, we compared the Ross Sea Height-based Tidal Inverse (Ross_Inv) model, which is a representative tide prediction model for the Antarctic Ross Sea, with the tide deformation of the ice shelf extracted from the DDInSAR image. The accuracy was analyzed as 3.86 cm in the east region of Ross Ice Shelf and it was confirmed that the inverse barometric pressure effect must be corrected in the tide model. However, in the east, it is confirmed that the tide model may be inaccurate because a large error occurs even after correction of the atmospheric effect. In addition, the Young's modulus of the ice was calculated on the basis of the one-dimensional elastic beam model showing the correlation between the width of the hinge zone where the tide strain occurs and the ice thickness. For this purpose, the grounding line is defined as the line where the displacement caused by the tide appears in the DDInSAR image, and the hinge line is defined as the line to have the local maximum/minimum deformation, and the hinge zone as the area between the two lines. According to the one-dimensional elastic beam model assuming a semi-infinite plane, the width of the hinge region is directly proportional to the 0.75 power of the ice thickness. The width of the hinge zone was measured in the area where the ground line and the hinge line were close to the straight line shown in DDInSAR. The linear regression analysis with the 0.75 power of BEDMAP2 ice thickness estimated the Young's modulus of 1.77±0.73 GPa in the east and west of the Ross Ice Shelf. In this way, more accurate Young's modulus can be estimated by accumulating Sentinel-1 images in the future.
