  • This study focuses on drawing implications in the development of practical adaptation strategies of migration women by marriage. For this study, eight migration women by marriage were chosen and their adaptation strategies as a wife, daughter-in-law, and as mother to adapt themselves to family lives were observed. For this, phenomenological method was adopted and their adaptation strategies were analyzed mainly in terms of their relationships within a family. Their adaptation strategies drawn in this study could be categorized into 11 themes, 26 theme bundles and 76 meanings. First, in relation to their husband, their adaptation strategies were 'to live relying on their good husband' and 'to think of their husband as their supporter.' Second, the adaptation strategies with regard to their parents-in-law were 'to exclude their husband's family' and 'to admit their caregiving.' Third, their adaptation strategies in terms of their relation to the children, were 'to set their children as the goal for marriage life,''to incorporate themselves with the local community,' 'to be equipped with authority as a parent' and 'to raise the children as a Korean.' In addition, their psychological adaptation strategies displayed their admittance of changes, maintaining their own identity, their sustenance of self-esteem and the resignation. Finally, based on these results, this study suggested ways to facilitate their adaptation to family life as well as the essence of their adaptation strategies.

  • The objective of this study is to identify the community living experiences of married immigrant women in rural areas. For this purpose, we conducted qualitative research by sampling 14 married immigrant women who had lived in Korea for over three years by having in depth interviews with them. This study employed the grounded theory method suggested by Strauss and Corbin(1998). When raw data from in depth interviews with the participants were processed by open coding through the continuous comparison method with theoretical sensitivity, a total of 13 categories, 27 sub.categories, and 71 concepts were extracted. In case of axial coding, according to the results of analyzing through the paradigm procedure, the causal conditions for the community living experiences of married immigrant women in rural areas were 'Uncertain start' and 'Confront practical problems,' and the central phenomenon was 'Search for existence to participate in community activities.' Contextual conditions affecting the phenomenon was 'Regret international marriage,' 'Experience conflicts,' and 'Look with negative prejudices,' 'Overcome the actual' and action/interaction strategies were 'Look for a breakthrough of life' and 'Manage to acceptance.' Intervening conditions for promoting or suppressing the action/interaction strategies for the central phenomenon were 'Social support system' and 'local limitations,' and as a result, the community living experiences of married immigrant women in rural areas appeared to 'Prepare the future,' 'Hope continuous social activities,' and 'Expect public support systems.'

  • Marital status has drawn much attention as previous studies have been pointed it out as a key factor of health. Nonetheless, systematic studies on elderly marital status and health have been quite limited, for most researches have neglected the varying effects of marital status on health over the lifespan and mainly focused on midlife. This study, using nationwide survey on elderly population, attempts to discover the health differentials between widowed and married elderly and explain the differences though the structure and function of their social network. The results reveal that the magnitudes of marital status effects were differed by dimensions of health. The widowed were more likely to be unhappy than married, even after controlling the socio-demographic characteristics. In physical health, however, the health differences between widowed and married were less noticeable or disappeared, as sex, age and other structure factors were considered. Furthermore, the strength of social network factors affecting the physical and mental health of elderly turned out to be different between married and widowed: widowed were more likely than married to be affected by the contact with children and less likely to be affected by contact with friends/relatives. Such results had both positive and negative impact on physical and mental health of widowed. This may imply the difference in pathways of regulating health among the married and widowed elderly.

  • In this paper, we study on an 'e-Atlas of Society & Culture(e-ASC)', to develop and implement educational courseware for marriage immigrant women, to adapt Korean society. The 'e-ASC' can help cultural adaptation, such as the understanding of Korean people's common values and behaviors and can likewise provide opportunities to contribute to Korean society, for marriage immigrant women living in Korea. E-cultural map is a useful tool for providing educational experiences and sharing a sociocultural homogeneity, using three dimensional space, for both immigrants and residents. The 'e-Atlas of Society & Culture', suggested in this paper, using the notion of an E-cultural map, has a strong point. That is to say, the immigrants have contextual limitations about Korea and Korean culture, caused by some particular events in their motherland. This atlas provides an opportunity to overcome this contextual limitations and to help understand and adapt to Korean society for these immigrants. This 'e-Atlas of Society & Culture' can be an efficient educational tool for immigrants and can help marriage immigrant women understand and adapt Korean social and cultural phenomena. They might have contextual limitations about these phenomena in their motherland.

  • When ancient Chinese people called their relatives, both the marriage system and their blood ties are reflected in the kinship terms. For examples, the ancient China's unique marriage system, "yingqiehun," is reflected in kinship terms, like "shi," "di," and "zhi," which reflect the fact that women relatives married the same person, and thus resulting from the polygamy. Furthermore, there are good reasons to assume that there are master-and-servant relationships, as evidenced through the kinship terms "yingqiehun" from the beginning of polygamy. In this paper we will study the feature of their unique marital culture, "yingqiehun" by analyzing each meaning of "shi," "di," and "zhi" and other examples, and will also examine the cause of its prevalence at that time.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to describe the meaning of marriage and childbirth among Korean female university students living in the United States, who are influenced both by Korean culture at home and American culture in social contexts. Methods: This qualitative study used phenomenological approaches. Data were collected through individual in-depth interviews with five Korean female university students living in the United States. Data were analyzed using Colaizzi's method to derive the meaning of marriage and childbirth. Results: From the data, 239 meaningful statements, 49 meaning formations, 22 themes, and 12 theme clusters were extracted. Additionally, five major categories emerged. These categories were 1) marriage as an opportunity for self-growth, 2) the mirror of life: parents, 3) oneself who cannot give up, 4) a desire to live a stable life, and 5) ambivalence on the culture of two countries. Conclusion: To improve the positive meaning of marriage and childbirth, a positive role model such as a happy married life of parents at home must be ensured. Finally, institutional strategies should be established to support the balance between home and work, as well as various policies which support women's pregnancy and childbirth.

  • Background: Marriage is one of the major life events and the primary source of individual happiness and meaning of life. It is not possible to predict who will marry whom and which marriage will be successful. Marital adjustment has significant influences on an individual and relationship functioning and is associated with mental health. Good marital quality may imply good general relationship. There are several factors that correlate with or predict good marital quality. Especially individual personality factors may be a major factor in achieving and maintaining marital stability, satisfaction and happiness. The aim of the present study was to investigate the possible relationship between dyadic adjustment and personality dimensions in urban married women. Methods: Dyadic Adjustment Scale, Eysenck's Personality Questionnaire, Beck Depression Inventory and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory were administered to 215 married women. Data analysis was based on 170 women who provided reliable informations. The descriptive statistics of demographic data and 4 scales were obtained. Then the possible relationships between each data were tested by calculating Pearson's product moment correlations. To test the effects of depression and anxiety on dyadic adjustment, stepwise multiple regression analysis was done. Results: Age and length of marriage were negatively correlated with affectional expression and dyadic cohesion. Educational level was positively correlated with total dyadic adjustment score and dyadic satisfaction. Family income was positively correlated with total dyadic adjustment score, dyadic consensus, dyadic satisfaction and dyadic cohesion. Different family type showed different total dyadic adjustment score, dyadic satisfaction and dyadic cohesion. Psychoticism was negatively correlated with total dyadic adjustment score, dyadic consensus, dyadic satisfaction, affectional expression and dyadic cohesion. Neuroticism was negatively correlated with total dyadic adjustment score, dyadic consensus, dyadic satisfaction and affectional expression. Extraversion and lie were not correlated with any factors. Beck Depression Inventory and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory scores were negatively correlated with total dyadic adjustment score, dyadic consensus, dyadic satisfaction, affectional expression and dyadic cohesion. The result of multiple regression analysis indicated that psychoticism was correlated with dyadic adjustment. Conclusion: These results showed that the demographic factors such as age, length of marriage, educational level, family income and family type were significantly correlated with dyadic adjustment. Psychoticism and neuroticism measured by Eysenck Personality Inventory were significantly correlated with dyadic adjustment. But the correlations with extraversion and lie were not significant. Especially correlation between neuroticism and dyadic adjustment seemed to be mediated by emotional state such as depression and anxiety. These findings suggest that personality factors may be involved in marital relationship and that clinician must consider personality aspect in dealing with marital problems. Future study about differences between control group and psychiatric patient group will be needed.
