Implementation of Bio-Sensor with Coupled Plasmon-Waveguide Resonance Profile (결합된 플라즈몬-도파관 공진 구조로 구성된 바이오센서의 구현)

  • The bio-sensing properties of TE and TM guided modes in the coupled plasmon-waveguide resonance (PWR) configuration are investigated. The modal transmission-line theory (MTLT) is used for numerical analysis. The proposed PWR bio-sensor is composed of multi-layered configuration with N pairs of MgF2-Si3N4 layers to enhance the sensitivity of a conventional Ag-based surface plasmon resonance bio-sensor. The angular sensitivity of bio-sensor is numerically analyzed for a wide range of biological solutions (refractive index 1.33~1.37). Furthermore, the availability of sensor to detect cancer cells and blood plasma concentration is evaluated. Finally, the results indicate that the proposed bio-sensor is capable efficiently to detect various kinds of cancer cells and different glucose concentrations in urine.

Modal Transmission-Line Theory to Design Circular Grating Filters for Optical Communication (광통신용 원통형 격자필터 설계를 위한 모드 전송선로 이론)

  • Circular Distributed-feedback (DFB) guiding structures can be incorporated in most of the semiconductor laser devices because of the frequency-selective property applicable as an optical filter in optical communications. In this paper, we present a novel and simple modal transmission-line theory (MTLT) using Floquet-Babinet's principle to analyze the optical filtering characteristics of Bragg gratings with cylindrical profile. The numerical results reveal that this method offers a simple and convenient algorithm to analyze the filtering characteristics of circular DFB configurations as well as is extended conveniently to evaluate the guiding problems of circular multi-layered periodic structures.

  • We investigate a method to improve the extinction ratio of directional couplers by controlling the angle of approach to their input ports and controlling the error limit for improving the extinction ratio of the directional coupler. Although relatively large angle of approach to the input port usually causes an error in calculations made by mode propagation analysis(MPA), optimally designed angle of approach not only minimizes errors in MPA calculations but also can improve extinction ratio by precision control of coupling coefficients of optical modes. We show that abrupt changes in approaching angle, although not enough to cause modal leakage, give rise to field-profile overshooting, which degrades extinction ratio and other properties of the directional coupler. Using Beam Propagation Method (BPM) we calculate two types of input structures, linear and curved, for optimization of extinction ratio.

  • A rigorous modal transmission-line theory (MTLT) based on effective dielectric method (EDM) is introduced and developed for the design of optical directional couplers with rib-type. This approach provides a rigorous numerical algorithm that takes all the possible guided components into consideration, and thus may serve as an appropriate reference to access the accuracy of such simplified methods as effective index method (EIM) and perturbation theory. Consequently, to search the optical parameters for maximum power coupling of the optical couplers, we evaluate the operating wavelength, the interval S between rib guides and the thickness t of a cladding layer.

  • We show that both cross and bar states with very high extinction ratios larger than 30 dB can be obtained in ultra short (< $100{\mu}m$) two-section vertical directional couplers. Based on the calculations of various possible combinations of the refractive indices of waveguides in each section using the improved coupled mode theory and beam propagation method, the guidelines for the design of ultra short two-section vertical directional couplers are presented to obtain both cross and bar states with high extinction ratios larger than 30 dB at the ends of section 1 and section 2, respectively.

  • We show that both cross and bar states with high extinction ratios larger than 30dB can be achieved at eh same ends of ultra-short fused vertical directional coupler switches with two sections by changing the refractive indices of cores and inner cladding layers less than 1%. Based on the calculation of extinction ratios of cross state and bar state for various refractive index and thickness of inner cladding layer and core using the improved coupled mode theory and beam propagation method, the guidelines for design to achieve large tolerances in refractive indices of core and inner cladding layer in fused vertical directional coupler switches are presented.

  • In this paper, forward-wave -3㏈ directional coupler with finite-thickness conductor and asymmetrical coupled lines are designed and experimentally verified using mode-matching based design methodology. Most of studies published in the literatures about the coupled lines are mainly concentrated on the adjustment of coupling amount by changing various geometric configurations. The analysis results in this paper show that thicker metalization requires reduced coupler length in the forward-wave directional coupler composed of asymmetrical coupled lines. Several forward-wave directional -3 ㏈ couplers with finite metalization thickness composed of asymmetrical coupled microstrip lines have been designed in the 5 ㎓ based on proposed design method. The measured data show -4.05㏈∼-4.09㏈ coupling at center frequency which is very closed to design value. The tight coupling has been implemented with accurate design methodology which take mentalization thickness into account.

  • 본 논문은 새로운 단일전력변환 SEPIC(Single-Ended Primary-Inductor Converter)-ZETA 절연형 양방향 컨버터를 제안한다. 제안된 컨버터는 SEPIC과 ZETA 컨버터가 결합된 구조로 절연을 통해 안정성을 강화했고, DC측 리플 전류가 낮아 에너지 저장장치의 수명을 연장시킨다. 그리고 SEPIC 컨버터 모드(DC/AC)와 ZETA 컨버터 모드(AC/DC)에서의 입출력 전압비가 동일해 양방향 제어 알고리즘이 간단하다. 또한, 기존 two-stage 구성의 양방향 컨버터와 달리 회로가 단순하며, 단일전력변환을 통한 고효율 저비용의 장점을 가지고 있다. 본 논문에서는 이론적 해석 및 제안한 컨버터의 250W급 시작품을 이용한 실험결과를 통해 컨버터의 우수성 및 성능을 검증한다.

Single-mode fiber depolarizer for WDM optical communications (WDM 광통신 시스템을 위한 단일모드 광섬유 무편광기)

  • We realized a depolarizer based on two 2$\times$2 directional couplers and single mode optical fiber. A reduction method for the degree of polarization is demonstrated by using computer simulation, which is verified experimentally. The degree of polarization is -20 dB for the polarized input beam of spectral width less than 0.05 nm. The experimental results verify that the polarization noise, which is due to the change of the input polarization state, can be reduced by making the fiber-ring delay-line length greater thanthecoherencelengthofthesource.

  • Focusing geometry dependence of output Stokes energy in single pass methane Raman shifter is investigated. The experimental result shows that the threshold energy decreases as confocal parameter increases. This result can be explained by gain suppression caused by Stokes - anti-Stokes coupling. In this paper, we give simple analysis for the focusing geometry dependence of Stokes - anti-Stokes coupling and present the criterion of confocal parameter to reduce the gain suppression. Focusing geometry dependence of stimulated Brillouin scattering is measured and the result is in good agreement with theoretical prediction.
