  • A plane-wave incident upon asymmetric multi-layered dielectric grating as well as symmetric grating structure generates space harmonics. Selected space harmonics among those harmonics can undergo strong resonance scattering variations known as GMR(guided-mode resonance). In this paper, to clarify these effects, the field propagation and dispersion curve inside the grating region are analyzed by using a rigorous equivalent transmission-line theory(RETT) based on eigenvalue problem. The results show that, at the peak of a scattering resonance, the reflected mode is almost identical to a leaky wave that can be supported by the grating structure. Thus, it confirms to be occurred GMR effect associated with the free-resonant character of leaky waves at asymmetric multi-layered dielectric gratings. Quantitative simulation results illustrating the behavior of typical gratings are given, and the special case of normal incidence is discussed for TE and TM modes.

  • We design a polarization-independent dielectric multilayer thin-film diffraction grating for a spectral-beam-combining (SBC) system with a simple grating structure and low aspect ratio. To maintain the high quality of the SBC beam, we propose a multilayer mirror structure in which the wavefront distortion due to stress accumulation is minimized. Moreover, to prevent light absorption from contamination, an optimized design to minimize the grating thickness was performed. The optimally designed diffraction grating has 99.36% diffraction efficiency for -1st-order polarization-independent light, for incidence at the Littrow angle and 1055-nm wavelength. It is confirmed that the designed diffraction grating has sufficient process margin to secure a polarization-independent diffraction efficiency of 96% or greater.

  • The radiation characteristics of leaky antenna from the dielectric-coated conducting cylinder with periodic corrugation are investigated theoretically for the infinite and finite periodic structures. For the infinite periodic structure, mode-matching method is applied. The integral equation is derived for the finite periodic structure by use of the Fourier transform and mode expansion and a simultaneous linear equation is obtained. The influences of the corrugation slot width, corrugation depth, dielectric thickness, cylinder radius, and finite corrugation number on the radiation characteristics (leakage constant, phase constant, and radiation pattern) are investigated. The results of the finite periodic corrugations are compared with those of the infinite extent structure and good agreement is found. To reduce high side lobe levels of the uniform finite periodic structure, tapering process on the beginning and end section of antenna and nonuniform quasi-period slot arrays are considered. Especially, for the corrugation period, width and depth used for a corrugated surface wave antenna, through the proper tapering process, end-fire radiation pattern with reduced side lobe levels is given.

  • The compression and tension test were performed to evaluate the stiffnesses of the conical composite lattice structures and results of test were compared with finite element analysis results. Because of difficulty to perform simple tension and compression test due to conical shape, suitable specimens and jig for test were made. Subelements extracted from the structure were prepared for compression test. Compression test of subelement was performed and compressive strains in fiber direction were measured. Compressive stiffness of the helical rib was verified by finite element analysis results. For stiffness of hoop rib, hoop ring specimens were extracted from the structure. Tension test of hoop ring specimen was performed to apply bending deformation to hoop rib. Stiffness of hoop rib was verified by finite element model considering various fiber volume fraction in thickness direction.

  • In this paper, we analyze the scattered electromagnetic wave by dielectric periodic media using the approximated thin phase screen theory. The phase screen approximated theory is that periodic media changes only the phase of the incident electromagnetic wave. Using this theory, we calculate the distribution of near field right after its passing periodic media. This theory can analyze a scattered field more simply and more quickly than existing theories.

  • This study derives numerically the shell Knockdown factors for the isogrid-stiffened cylinders of space launch vehicles when the axially compressive force and internal pressure are applied simultaneously. A commercial nonlinear finite element analysis software, ABAQUS, is used for the present work. Nonlinear postbuckling analyses are conducted to calculate the global buckling loads of a cylinder without and with the internal pressure. The shell Knockdown factor is numerically derived using the predicted global buckling loads without and with the geometrically initial imperfection of a cylinder. When the internal pressure of 500 kPa and compressive force are applied to the cylinder, the global buckling load and Knockdown factor increases by 304% and 53%, respectively, as compared to the results without the internal pressure.

  • The nonstoichiometric ordering of Mg and Nb cations in undoped and La-doped lead magnesium niobate solid solutions has been investigated by means of high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and computer image simulation. High-resolution lattice images were obtained under various microscope imaging conditions and objective apertures. Computer image simulations were performed for a wide range of sample thickness, defocusing value, and long-range order parameter. The simulated images revealed that the lattice images of the ordered regions were predominantly dependent on the long-range order parameter. From the comparisons of the experimental and simulated images for the ordered regions, the long-range order parameter approximately ranged 0.2 to 0 7. It was also found that the ordered structure has a $(NH_4)_3-FeF_6$ structure, which consists of alternating Mg- and Nb-preferred sublattices along the (111) directions.

  • In this study, we propose a grating structure using guided-mode resonance (GMR) to increase the absorption efficiency of a silicon solar cell. The proposed solar cell design consists of a one-dimensional diffraction grating and a planar waveguide layer of poly-silicon deposited on a silver reflector. We investigate the influence of structure parameters such as grating period, waveguide thickness, grating width and grating depth. Optimal parameters are found using the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. In the optimized GMR-assisted solar cell, absorption efficiency up to 65.8% is achieved in the wavelength range of 300 nm~750 nm.
